To read a kundli, start with the lagna (the sign rising at your birth), count the twelve houses from it, then see which sign and which planets sit in each house and where each house's lord has gone. After that come the Moon and its nakshatra, the aspects, and the dasha periods that say when each part of the chart is active.
That is the whole method, and it is the same one astrologers use. What makes a kundli look difficult is not the logic but the vocabulary and the diagram. This guide walks through both in eight steps and then reads one real chart, made by our own engine, from beginning to end. What a kundli is, and what it needs
A kundli (janam kundli, janam patri) is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. It records where nine grahas stood: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. It places them in twelve signs (rashis) and twelve houses (bhavas).
It needs three things: date, time and place of birth. The place gives the latitude, longitude and time zone. The time matters most, because the lagna moves through all twelve signs in a day, about one sign every two hours. A chart made with a guessed time can have the right planets in the wrong houses.
Vedic charts use the sidereal zodiac, measured from the fixed stars. The difference from the Western (tropical) zodiac is the ayanamsa; our charts use Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) by default, which is the standard adopted by the Government of India's calendar reform. For a 1990 birth it is 23°43′, so most planets sit one sign earlier than in a Western chart.
Step 1: Find the lagna
The lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It becomes house 1, the house of the self: body, temperament, how you meet the world. Every other house is counted from it.
If you remember one thing, remember this: the rest of the chart cannot be read until the lagna is known. Two people born on the same day in the same city a few hours apart have nearly the same planets in the same signs, but different lagnas, so the planets fall in different houses and the charts read differently.
Step 2: Learn the twelve houses
Count forward from the lagna: the next sign is house 2, the one after is house 3, and so on round to house 12. Our charts use whole-sign houses, the classical default: one sign is one house.

Some groupings come up constantly. Houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 are the kendras (angles), the pillars of the chart. Houses 1, 5 and 9 are the trikonas (trines), the houses of fortune. Houses 6, 8 and 12 are the dusthanas, the difficult houses. You will meet these words in every reading.
Step 3: Read the diagram, North or South
There are two common ways to draw the same chart, and confusing them is the most common beginner mistake.
North Indian (diamond) style. The houses are fixed. House 1 is always the diamond at the top centre, and the houses run anticlockwise from there. The small number in each house is the sign that falls in it: 1 for Aries, 2 for Taurus, through 12 for Pisces. So an "11" in the top diamond means an Aquarius lagna, not "house 11".
South Indian (square) style. The signs are fixed. Pisces is the top-left box, and the signs run clockwise, Aries next to it. The lagna is marked with a line or "Asc" in whichever box it falls, and you count houses from there.
Both show exactly the same information. Our kundli lets you switch between the two, and every chart on the page follows your choice.
Step 4: Note the sign and lord of each house
Each sign has a lord (ruling planet): Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, the Moon rules Cancer, the Sun rules Leo, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius. Rahu and Ketu rule no sign in the classical scheme.
So each house has a lord too: the lord of the sign in it. The lord of the 10th, wherever it sits, carries the story of your work; the lord of the 7th carries the story of partnership. A house with no planet in it is not "empty" in any bad sense. It is read from its lord.
Step 5: Read each planet by sign, house and condition
For each planet, ask three questions. Which house is it in (what area of life does it act on)? Which sign is it in (in what manner)? And what condition is it in? The planets table in our kundli gives these conditions directly:
- Dignity. A planet is strongest when exalted (Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in Pisces, Saturn in Libra), comfortable in its own sign, and weakest when debilitated (the sign opposite its exaltation). Otherwise it is in a friend's, neutral or enemy's sign.
- Retrograde. The planet appears to move backwards from Earth. Traditions read this differently, and it is not a defect in itself. Rahu and Ketu always move this way, so the flag is not shown for them.
- Combust. The planet is so close to the Sun that it is lost in its glare, traditionally a sign that its significations are weakened.
Step 6: Find the Moon, rashi and nakshatra
In Vedic astrology the Moon matters almost as much as the lagna. The sign the Moon occupies is your rashi (Moon sign), the one used for daily rashifal and for kundli matching. The Moon's nakshatra, one of 27 lunar mansions, gives the naming syllable, the starting point of the Vimshottari dasha, and most of the gun milan factors.
Many astrologers also read the chart a second time with the Moon's sign as house 1 (chandra lagna), and some doshas, such as manglik, are checked from the Moon as well.
Step 7: See the aspects
In Vedic astrology every graha fully aspects (casts drishti on) the 7th house from itself. Three have extra aspects: Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th. A house or planet receiving the aspect of a benefic like Jupiter is traditionally supported; one aspected by Saturn or Mars is pressed on. Conventions for Rahu and Ketu disagree, so our aspects tab does not assign them any.
Step 8: Add timing with the dasha
A chart shows promise; the Vimshottari dasha says when. It is a 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods (mahadashas), each divided into sub-periods (antardashas), starting from the lord of your birth nakshatra. During a planet's period, the houses it occupies and rules come to the front. This is how two siblings with similar charts can have very different decades. Doshas and yogas come last, on purpose. They are named combinations, and a named combination read before the rest of the chart tends to swallow the reading. Read them as one line in a larger story.
A worked example: Asha, born 1 January 1990, 10:00, Varanasi
Here is a real chart from our engine. "Asha" is an example name; the numbers are exact output (Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses).

Step 1, lagna. Aquarius rises at 10°46′. In the North Indian chart the top diamond carries the number 11, with the Moon inside it.
Steps 2 to 4, houses and lords. Counting from Aquarius: house 2 is Pisces, 3 Aries, and so on to house 12, Capricorn. The lagna lord is Saturn (Aquarius), and Saturn sits in the 11th, the house of gains, with the Sun. The 10th house, Scorpio, holds its own lord Mars. The 7th house, Leo, is empty, so partnership is read from its lord, the Sun, which is also in the 11th.
Step 5, planets. Mars in its own sign in a kendra (the 10th) forms Ruchaka yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas; the engine lists it with its rule. Saturn is combust, 5° from the Sun, so the lagna lord is traditionally weakened even while well placed. Three planets are retrograde. Mercury is the lord of the 8th and sits in the 12th, which our engine reports as Sarala Vipreet Raja yoga (a dusthana lord in a dusthana).
Step 6, Moon. The Moon is in the lagna itself, in Aquarius, in Dhanishta pada 4. So the rashi is Kumbha (Aquarius), the naming syllable is "Ge", and the chart looks almost the same from the Moon as from the lagna. Note the Vedic Sun is in Sagittarius; a Western chart would put this birth in Capricorn.
Step 7, aspects. Jupiter in the 5th aspects the 9th, the 11th (the Sun and Saturn) and the lagna with the Moon. Mars from the 10th aspects the lagna, the 4th and Jupiter in the 5th. Saturn aspects the lagna, the 5th and the 8th. The lagna and Moon are therefore touched by all three of Jupiter, Mars and Saturn, a busy first house.
Step 8, dasha. The Moon's nakshatra lord is Mars, so life began in the Mars mahadasha, with 8 months 10 days of it left at birth. As of 22 September 2026 Asha is in Saturn mahadasha (10 September 2024 to 11 September 2043), Saturn antardasha until 14 September 2027. Saturn is both the lagna lord and the 12th lord here, so this long period puts the self, gains and expenses at the centre.
Doshas. Mars is in the 10th from the lagna and the Moon and the 11th from Venus, so the chart is not manglik by the classical rule. Sade sati is active on that date: Saturn is transiting Pisces, the 2nd from the Moon, the setting phase, which runs until 23 February 2028 per our engine. There is no Kaal Sarp combination.
That is a complete first reading: who the chart is about, where the energy collects (the 1st, 11th and 12th), which planets are strong or strained, and which chapter of life is running now.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reading North Indian numbers as houses. They are signs. The house is the position in the diamond.
- Mixing up rashi and sun sign. Your rashi is the Moon's sign. Western horoscopes use the tropical Sun.
- Trusting an approximate birth time near a boundary. If your lagna is in the first or last degree of a sign, a few minutes change it. Check the degree before reading house by house.
- Letting one yoga or dosha decide everything. A strong yoga in a weak chart gives less than the name promises; a dosha with its cancellations may matter little.
- Ignoring the ayanamsa. Charts made with different ayanamsas (Lahiri, Raman, KP) can differ by about a degree, enough to move a planet near a sign edge. Our settings show which one was used.
