As per vastu, the best place for a kitchen is the south-east of the house, the corner of Agni, and the second choice is the north-west. Inside the kitchen, the stove sits in the south-east part of the room, the cook faces east, and the sink stays a little away from the stove.
That is the whole rule in two sentences. Why the south-east
Vastu divides a plot into directions, each linked with a deity in the vastu purusha mandala described in the classical manuals such as Mayamata, Manasara and the vastu chapter of Brihat Samhita. The south-east (agneya kona) belongs to Agni, fire. Placing the household fire in the fire corner is the simplest idea in vastu: use each part of the home for what that part stands for.
There is a practical side too, which is probably why the rule has lasted. In most of India the south-east gets morning sun and, in many layouts, the summer breeze carries kitchen smoke and heat away from the living areas rather than through them.
The north-west as a second choice
The north-west (vayavya kona) belongs to Vayu, the wind. Texts and later practice accept it for the kitchen because air and fire work together, and a well-ventilated corner suits cooking. If your kitchen is in the north-west, you are within the tradition; there is nothing to correct.

Inside the kitchen
Stove and the direction you face
Place the stove on the south-east side of the kitchen so that the person cooking faces east. East is the direction of the rising sun, and texts treat facing east as the natural posture for sacred and daily work alike; many families also see cooking as an offering. North is the accepted alternative. Facing south while cooking is the one the tradition discourages.
The practical reason matters just as much: an east-facing cook usually has a window ahead, gets morning light on the counter, and is not standing with their back to the door.
Stove versus sink: fire and water
The stove is fire; the sink and the water purifier are water. Vastu prefers them apart, ideally not side by side and not in one straight line on the same counter. Water belongs in the north or north-east of the kitchen.
In a small modular kitchen this is not always possible, and the tradition does not ask you to rip out a counter. A counter-width gap, a chopping area between them, or a small divider is the usual compromise. Keeping the two apart is also plain kitchen safety.
Fridge, storage and appliances
- Fridge: south-west, west or north-west of the kitchen. It is a heavy appliance, and heavy things belong to the south and west. Avoid the north-east corner for it.
- Microwave, oven, mixer: south-east, near the stove, since they are electrical and heat-related.
- Grains and heavy storage: south or west walls. Keep the north-east shelves light.
- Windows and exhaust: the east wall is preferred for a window, with the exhaust fan on the east or on the south-east side above the stove.
What goes above and below
Avoid placing the kitchen directly above or below a pooja room or a toilet, and avoid a shared wall between the stove and a toilet where you can. In flats this is often not in your control. If it applies to you, keep the kitchen scrupulously clean, keep the stove off the shared wall if the layout allows, and do not worry beyond that. An existing kitchen in the north-east or south-west
Most people reading this are not building a house. They live in a flat or a rented home and have just discovered that the kitchen is in the "wrong" corner. Here is what the tradition itself suggests, all of it free and renter-safe:
- Move the fire, not the walls. If the stove sits on a movable counter or a cooking range, place it in the south-east part of the kitchen, whatever the kitchen's position in the house.
- Cook facing east. This is the adjustment most texts put first, and it is often possible with a small change in counter use.
- Keep the north-east of the kitchen light. No heavy storage, no gas cylinder, no bin in that corner. Water and a clean, empty patch of counter are fine there.
- Light and air. Bright, even light and a working exhaust. A dark, stuffy kitchen is a bigger problem in any tradition than the compass.
- Cleanliness. Wipe the stove every night, do not leave dirty vessels overnight, keep the kitchen free of broken utensils.
That is enough. Structural changes such as moving a gas line or a drain are for an architect or engineer; vastu here is about layout and use, not building work.
Common myths
- "A north-east kitchen brings illness or loss." No classical text promises a specific misfortune from a room's direction. The north-east is avoided because it is kept for water, light and prayer, not because a kitchen there is cursed.
- "You must buy a vastu pyramid, yantra or special tile." No classical text prescribes a product. We do not sell any, and nobody should pay for one out of fear.
- "Red or orange walls are compulsory." Warm colours are traditionally associated with the south-east, but white, cream and light shades are perfectly within the tradition and keep a kitchen bright.
- "The gas stove must never face south." The rule is about the cook's direction, not the appliance's. Facing east or north while cooking is the guideline.
