Nadi dosh is the name for a pair of charts in which the bride's and groom's Moon nakshatras belong to the same nadi, one of three groups called Adi, Madhya and Antya. In Ashtakoot gun milan the nadi koota carries 8 of the 36 points, and the same nadi scores 0 of 8. It is common, roughly one pair in three, and texts themselves list exceptions.
Because nadi is the heaviest single koota, a "nadi dosh" line on a matching report often worries families more than the total score. This guide explains the exact grouping, what the exceptions are, how often it happens, and what nadi does and does not claim to say.
The rule, exactly
Every chart has a Moon nakshatra (janma nakshatra), one of 27. Each nakshatra belongs to one nadi. The grouping follows a simple zig-zag through the list: Adi, Madhya, Antya, Antya, Madhya, Adi, and then repeat.

- Different nadis: the nadi koota gives the full 8 points.
- Same nadi: it gives 0 points, and this is nadi dosh.
There is nothing in between: nadi is all or nothing. That is why a single koota can move a total by 8 points and why it gets so much attention.
Traditionally the three nadis are linked to the three doshas of Ayurveda: Adi with vata, Madhya with pitta, Antya with kapha. That is a symbolic association inside the matching system, not a medical test of anyone's constitution.
How common is nadi dosh?
Each nadi holds exactly 9 of the 27 nakshatras. Once one partner's nakshatra is fixed, 9 of the 27 possible nakshatras for the other partner share its nadi. So for two people chosen at random, the chance of nadi dosh is 9 in 27, about one in three.
That single fact puts the fear in perspective. If nadi dosh meant a failed marriage or unhealthy children, a third of all couples would face it. Families have always married across this rule in large numbers, often after applying one of the exceptions below.
The exceptions our tool checks
Texts on matching list situations in which the same nadi is not treated as a dosha, or is treated as much weaker. Our kundli matching tool flags nadi dosh when it is present and lists the three most widely cited exceptions whenever they apply:
- Same Moon sign, different nakshatras. Both Moons are in one rashi but in different nakshatras.
- Same nakshatra, different Moon signs. A few nakshatras straddle two signs (for example Krittika runs from Aries into Taurus), so two people can share a nakshatra with their Moons in different signs.
- Same nakshatra, different padas. Both Moons are in one nakshatra but in different quarters of it.
Our tool shows these but does not add points back to the score. The nadi koota still reads 0 of 8, with the applicable exceptions listed beside it. Astrologers genuinely differ on how far an exception offsets the dosha: some treat it as a full cancellation, others as a softening. Showing the facts and leaving the weighing visible seemed more honest than quietly changing a number.
Other exceptions some texts add
You will also see these in panchangs and later works. We mention them so you recognise them, without claiming that they are universal:
- The lords of the two Moon signs are the same planet, or friends. For example, Aries and Scorpio are both ruled by Mars.
- The navamsa of the two Moons is considered, in some traditions, before calling the dosha.
- Strong scores in other kootas, especially graha maitri and bhakoot, are taken by many astrologers to lighten a nadi dosh.
- Regional lists that exempt particular nakshatras. These vary from one panchang to another.
When you see a claim that nadi dosh is "cancelled", it is worth asking which of these rules was used.
What nadi does not tell you
Some pages claim that nadi dosh shows incompatible blood groups, a genetic risk, or that children of such a couple will be unhealthy. We want to be plain about this: these claims are not established. Nadi is calculated from where the Moon stood among the stars at each person's birth. It has no connection to blood group, genes or any laboratory measure, and no study has shown that couples with the same nadi have less healthy children.
If you have a real concern about genetic conditions in a family, for instance a known inherited condition, talk to a doctor or a genetic counsellor. That is where a real answer comes from, and it applies whether or not the charts share a nadi.
Why fear-selling is wrong here
Nadi dosh is sometimes presented with urgency: the marriage must be called off, or an expensive ritual must be performed. Neither follows from the tradition.
- The tradition's own answer is to look further. The exceptions exist precisely so that the same nadi is not read mechanically.
- The score is only a first screen. Our guide to gun milan and the 36 gunas explains why a total, even with a 0 in nadi, is one input among many.
- Nothing needs to be bought. If a family wishes to pray or give in charity before a wedding, that is their free choice. It is not something the charts demand, and nobody should pay out of fear.
A calm checklist if your match shows nadi dosh
- Confirm both birth times and places. The Moon moves about one nakshatra a day, so a wrong date or a birth near midnight can change the nakshatra and the nadi.
- Check the nakshatra and pada of both Moons, shown in each kundli.
- See which exceptions apply. The matching tool lists them.
- Look at the other kootas and the two charts as a whole, including Manglik status, which our Manglik dosha guide explains.
- Talk as a family about what your tradition holds. Some communities weigh nadi heavily; others follow the exceptions readily.
- Keep health questions with doctors. Nadi is not a medical test.
