How do you decide if an eclipse is visible from India?
We compute it for five reference cities — New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Guwahati: whether the Sun (or Moon) is above the horizon during the eclipse, and which part of it can be seen from there.
When is sutak observed?
Tradition observes sutak only where the eclipse is visible — from 12 hours before a solar eclipse and 9 hours before a lunar one. A penumbral lunar eclipse is usually too faint to notice and is generally not given a sutak.
Should I be afraid of an eclipse?
No. An eclipse is an alignment of Sun, Moon and Earth whose time can be computed centuries ahead. Never look at a solar eclipse with the naked eye — use certified solar viewers.
