What a hora is
A hora is one twelfth of the day or of the night, each ruled by one of the seven grahas. Tradition matches the work to the ruler: Jupiter's hora for study, teaching and worship; Venus for the arts, clothes and relationships; Mercury for trade, writing and calculation; the Sun for dealings with government and seniors; the Moon for travel and public matters; Mars for effort, sport and property; Saturn for labour, repairs and settling old dues.
How these times are computed
Daylight from this city's sunrise to its sunset is divided into twelve equal horas, and the night from sunset to the next sunrise into twelve more. So a hora is 60 minutes only at the equinox; in winter the day horas shrink and the night horas grow. The first hora at sunrise belongs to the weekday's lord (Sunday the Sun, Monday the Moon, and so on), and each following hora goes to the next graha in the order Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars. Run that chain through 24 horas and the next sunrise lands on the next weekday's lord: the same rule that gives the week its order.
