Why do planets turn retrograde?
Earth and the planets orbit the Sun at different speeds. When Earth overtakes an outer planet (or Mercury or Venus passes between Earth and the Sun), that planet appears to move backward against the stars for a while.
What is the retrograde shadow?
Before turning retrograde, the planet first reaches the degrees it will later move back over — that is where the pre-shadow begins. After it turns direct, the post-shadow ends when it passes the degree where the retrograde began.
Is a retrograde period unlucky?
