Choosing a name by nakshatra
Tradition takes the first sound of a baby's name from the nakshatra the Moon occupies at birth. Each nakshatra has four padas (quarters), each with one syllable — 108 in all — and the syllable of the Moon's pada becomes the first sound of the name.
Short and long vowels count as the same sound (Li/Lee, A/Aa), but E and Ai, O and Au are different. Names that begin with a conjunct (Shr-, Pr-, Ksh-) fall under no syllable of the table. It is a tradition, not a rule — any name you love is fine.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a girl name by nakshatra?
Work out the Moon's nakshatra and pada at birth; that pada's syllable is the traditional first sound. Then pick from the names with that sound by meaning and how it sounds to you.
Must the name begin with the nakshatra syllable?
No. It is a lovely tradition, not a rule. Many families choose freely, and a name that begins with another sound does no harm.
How many names are listed?
879 girl names, all with meanings; 717 also with their nakshatra and rashi.
