Choosing a name by nakshatra
Tradition takes the first sound of a baby's name from the nakshatra the Moon occupies at birth. Each nakshatra has four padas (quarters), each with one syllable — 108 in all — and the syllable of the Moon's pada becomes the first sound of the name.
Short and long vowels count as the same sound (Li/Lee, A/Aa), but E and Ai, O and Au are different. Names that begin with a conjunct (Shr-, Pr-, Ksh-) fall under no syllable of the table. It is a tradition, not a rule — any name you love is fine.
Frequently asked questions
Which nakshatra suits baby names starting with P?
It depends on the first sound, not the letter. Names here begin with Pa (Uttara Phalguni pada 3), Pu (Hasta pada 1), Pi (Uttara Phalguni pada 4) or Pha (Purva Ashadha pada 3). The table on this page shows how many names each has.
Which rashi do names starting with P belong to?
By the syllable table, to Virgo or Sagittarius, depending on the sound. A rashi taken from the name (naam rashi) is a naming convention; the baby's real Moon sign comes from the birth time.
How many baby names starting with P are listed?
129: 75 boys' names and 58 girls' names, each with its meaning in English and Hindi.
How do I find my baby's naming syllable?
From the date, exact time and place of birth. Our free baby name letter calculator gives the Moon's nakshatra, pada and syllable, and warns when the Moon is close to a pada boundary.
Must the name begin with the nakshatra syllable?
No. It is a lovely tradition, not a rule. Many families choose a name freely, and a name that begins with another sound does no harm.
