Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026, also called Prabodhini or Devutthana Ekadashi, is on Friday, 20 November 2026 by the Smarta rule, and the fast is broken on Saturday 21 November between 1:10 PM and 3:17 PM in New Delhi. Some calendars will print 21 November as the Ekadashi; this post explains why, without either of them being wrong.

It is also the day Chaturmas ends and the wedding season reopens. Below: the tithi, the parana window by city, Tulsi Vivah on 21 November, and our vivah days for the rest of 2026 before kharmas closes the calendar again on 17 December.

An Ekadashi that touches no sunrise

Most of the time a tithi is present at one sunrise, and that sunrise decides the day. This year's Kartika Shukla Ekadashi is unusual. It begins at 7:16 AM on 20 November, half an hour after that morning's 6:47 AM sunrise, and ends at 6:31 AM on 21 November, seventeen minutes before the next sunrise at 6:48 AM. It sits wholly between two sunrises and owns neither. Such a tithi is called kshaya, a "lost" tithi: Dashami is the tithi at sunrise on 20 November and Dwadashi the tithi at sunrise on 21 November.

The texts give rules for exactly this case, and the two main traditions read them differently.

The Smarta rule (our default). Householders following the Smarta tradition keep the fast on the day the Ekadashi actually runs through, 20 November. That is the date on our festival page and in most north Indian household calendars.

The Vaishnava rule. Vaishnava practice is stricter about Dashami. If Dashami is still present at arunodaya, the pre-dawn period before sunrise, the Ekadashi is treated as "touched" by Dashami and the fast moves to the next day. On 20 November arunodaya is at 5:11 AM, while Ekadashi only begins at 7:16 AM, so Dashami is present. Vaishnava calendars therefore keep the fast on 21 November, when Ekadashi is still running at arunodaya. Some regional calendars follow the same reading.

Both are established rules. If your family follows a temple, sampradaya or regional calendar, keep its date; if you simply follow the household panchang, 20 November is the day.

Parana: breaking the fast on 21 November

The fast is broken the next day, during Dwadashi. Two conditions shape the window:

  1. After Hari Vasara. The first quarter of Dwadashi is called Hari Vasara, and the fast is not broken in it. Dwadashi runs from 6:31 AM on 21 November to 4:56 AM on 22 November, and its first quarter ends at 12:08 PM on 21 November. Tithi boundaries fall at the same instant everywhere, so Hari Vasara ends at 12:08 PM IST in every city.
  2. Not at midday. Tradition prefers to break the fast in the morning and avoids the midday part of the day. Since Hari Vasara covers this morning, the window moves to the part of the day after midday. In New Delhi that is 1:10 PM to 3:17 PM.

The parana window depends on your local sunrise and sunset, so it differs by city:

Tulsi Vivah on 21 November

Tulsi Vivah is on Saturday 21 November 2026, the Kartika Shukla Dwadashi, which runs from 6:31 AM on 21 November to 4:56 AM on 22 November. The ceremonial marriage of the tulsi plant to Shaligram or Vishnu marks the god's waking and is, for many families, the symbolic opening of their own wedding season. Customs vary: some families perform it on the evening of the Ekadashi itself, others on Dwadashi, and some at any time up to Kartika Purnima. Our Tulsi Vivah page has the date and local times.

Chaturmas ends, the wedding season opens

Chaturmas, the four months during which Vishnu is said to sleep, began on Devshayani Ekadashi and ran from 25 July to 20 November 2026. Weddings, griha pravesh and similar ceremonies are traditionally avoided in it, which is why our marriage calendar has no days at all in August, September or October 2026. Details are on the Chaturmas 2026 page.

From 21 November the calendar reopens, but not every day is a marriage muhurat. Our engine checks each day against the classical rules: one of the eleven vivah nakshatras (Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati), a permitted tithi, and no Vishti (Bhadra), Vyatipata or Vaidhriti, with Rahu kaal avoided. It also blocks whole periods: chaturmas, kharmas, adhik maas, and the combustion of Jupiter or Venus.

Shadi muhurat November and December 2026 (New Delhi)

MonthVivah days
November 202621, 24, 25, 26, 30
December 20262, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12

That is 5 days in November and 8 in December. The month pages show each day with its details: November 2026 and December 2026. The whole year is on vivah muhurat 2026.

Vivah Panchami falls on Monday 14 December 2026. Many families treat it as a good wedding day by tradition, but it is not among the days that pass our rules this year, so it is not in the list above. That is a difference of method, not a judgement on families who choose it.

Kharmas from mid-December

The Sun enters sidereal Sagittarius (Dhanu) at 10:25 AM on 16 December 2026 and stays there until 9:10 PM on 14 January 2027. This month, kharmas, is traditionally closed to weddings. Our engine checks the Sun's sign at sunrise, so 16 December still counts as free (sunrise comes before 10:25 AM) and the blocked days are 17 December 2026 to 14 January 2027. Marriage days resume from 15 January 2027. See the kharmas 2026 page.

Panchangs differ on wedding days more than on almost anything else. Some do not block Venus or Jupiter combustion by a fixed rule, some allow the tail of Bhadra, some use a narrower tithi list. If your family priest's list differs from ours by a day or two, that is usually why. Our post on marriage timing in the kundli explains the separate question of when a person's chart favours marriage, and the kundli matching tool covers compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

When is Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026?

By the Smarta rule it is on Friday 20 November 2026. Shukla Ekadashi runs from 7:16 AM on 20 November to 6:31 AM on 21 November, so it touches neither sunrise and is kept on the day it begins.

What is the parana time for Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026?

In New Delhi the fast is broken on Saturday 21 November between 1:10 PM and 3:17 PM, after Hari Vasara ends at 12:08 PM. Other cities differ: Mumbai 1:31 to 3:45 PM, Kolkata 12:28 to 2:39 PM, Patna 12:39 to 2:49 PM.

Why do some calendars show Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 21 November 2026?

Because the Ekadashi does not hold at either sunrise. Vaishnava calendars do not accept an Ekadashi that is touched by Dashami at arunodaya, the pre-dawn hour, which is the case on 20 November, so they keep the fast on 21 November.

When is Tulsi Vivah 2026?

Tulsi Vivah is on Saturday 21 November 2026, the Dwadashi, which runs from 6:31 AM on 21 November to 4:56 AM on 22 November.

What are the shadi muhurat dates in November and December 2026?

Under our rules for New Delhi: 21, 24, 25, 26 and 30 November, and 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11 and 12 December 2026. Kharmas then blocks marriages from 17 December 2026 to 14 January 2027.
