When Will I Get Married? Reading Marriage Timing in a Kundli

No kundli can give you the date of your wedding, but the classical method can point to the periods when marriage is most supported. You read three things in order: whether the chart promises marriage (the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the navamsa), which dasha activates those planets, and whether Jupiter and Saturn are touching the 7th house by transit at the same time.

The rest of this guide walks through each step, shows it on a made-up chart, and is honest about the limits. To follow along with your own chart, make a free kundli with your exact birth time and place.

Why a date of birth alone is not enough

Many "shadi kab hogi" calculators ask only for a date of birth and return an age like "27 to 29". That cannot be a real reading. Everything in marriage timing hangs on the 7th house, and the 7th house is counted from the lagna (ascendant), which moves through all twelve signs in a day, roughly one sign every two hours, and differs by place. Two people born on the same day in the same city, four hours apart, have different 7th houses, different 7th lords and a different dasha balance. A calculator that ignores time and place gives all of them the same answer, which tells you it is not reading a chart at all.

Step 1: the promise — is marriage indicated, and how?

Before timing anything, an astrologer reads what the chart says about partnership in general. The classical texts, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) and Phaladeepika among them, look at:

• The 7th house (kalatra bhava). Its sign, the planets sitting in it and the planets aspecting it. In Parashari astrology every planet aspects the 7th sign from itself; Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th. Benefics (Jupiter, Venus, a strong Moon, a well-placed Mercury) in or aspecting the 7th are read as supportive; Saturn's influence as slowness and seriousness.
• The 7th lord. The planet ruling the sign on the 7th house. Where it sits (a kendra or trikona is strong; the 6th, 8th or 12th is harder), its dignity (own sign, exalted, debilitated) and which planets join it.
• Venus. The natural significator (karaka) of marriage and partnership for everyone. A strong, unafflicted Venus supports relationships.
• Jupiter. In a woman's chart the tradition also reads Jupiter as the karaka of the husband. Many modern astrologers read both Venus and Jupiter for everyone, whatever the gender.
• The navamsa (D9). The ninth-division chart, traditionally the chart of marriage and of the strength of planets. Astrologers read its lagna, its 7th house and lord, and the navamsa sign of Venus. A 7th lord that is weak in the birth chart but strong in the navamsa is read as improving.

A chart almost never "denies" marriage. What this step tells you is the flavour: an easy or a demanding partnership, early or deliberate, and which planets are the key actors. Those key actors are what you time in step 2.

Step 2: timing — which dasha brings it forward

The main timing tool is the Vimshottari dasha (explained fully in our mahadasha and antardasha guide). A planet's period brings forward the matters it is connected with in your chart. For marriage, the planets whose mahadasha or, more often, antardasha is read as supportive are:

1. The 7th lord.
2. Planets in the 7th house, and planets strongly aspecting it.
3. Venus, the marriage karaka (and Jupiter, as above).
4. The dispositor of the 7th lord, the lord of the sign in which the 7th lord sits.
5. Rahu, which many astrologers find active in marriage timing, especially when linked to the 7th house or its lord.
6. The navamsa lagna lord and the navamsa 7th lord.

The strongest candidate is a planet that appears on this list more than once, for example the 7th lord that is also in the navamsa 7th, or Venus aspected by Jupiter. When the mahadasha lord and the antardasha lord are both on the list, astrologers treat the period as a real window.

Be aware of one honest problem: with six categories, most charts have four or five qualifying planets. The dasha narrows the question from "sometime in life" to a handful of antardashas; it does not pick one.

Step 3: confirmation — the Jupiter and Saturn transits

Astrologers then check the slow planets in the sky (gochar) against the dasha.

Jupiter. Jupiter moving through the natal 7th house, or aspecting it or the 7th lord from the 5th, 7th or 9th sign away, is the classic supportive transit. It is often also checked from the Moon sign.

The double transit. A technique popularised by Indian astrologers in the 20th century holds that a major event is most likely when Jupiter and Saturn both touch the relevant house or its lord at the same time, by occupation or aspect. For marriage that means the 7th house or the 7th lord. It is widely used and often useful, but it is a modern teaching; you will not find it spelt out this way in BPHS.

Here are the sign periods of both planets for the next two years, per our engine (Lahiri ayanamsa). Notice that neither moves in a straight line: while retrograde, each steps back into the previous sign for a few months, so transit windows are ranges.

To see which of your houses they touch, find these signs in your kundli's house chart and note the house numbers. Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself: from Cancer that is Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces; from Leo, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Aries; from Virgo, Capricorn, Pisces and Taurus. Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th: from Pisces, Taurus, Virgo and Sagittarius; from Aries, Gemini, Libra and Capricorn. If a planet sits in, or aspects, your 7th sign or the sign holding your 7th lord, it is touching it. The Jupiter transit and Saturn transit pages list every ingress.

A worked illustration (made-up chart)

This chart is invented to show the steps; it belongs to nobody. The transit dates are the real ones above.

Taurus lagna. The 7th house is Scorpio, so the 7th lord is Mars. No planet occupies the 7th.

Promise. Good: a strong 7th lord, Jupiter's aspect on the 7th, and Venus exalted in the navamsa.

Dasha. Candidates are Mars, Venus, Jupiter (aspecting the 7th house and the 7th lord, and the navamsa 7th lord), Saturn, Rahu and Mercury. That is six of the nine planets, which is exactly the honest problem above. The ones that appear more than once are Jupiter and Venus. Suppose she is 27 and in Rahu mahadasha, about to enter the Jupiter antardasha, which lasts 2 years 4 months 24 days. A reader would call that a real window: Rahu is on the list and Jupiter is on it three times.

Transit. From Cancer, the 3rd house, Jupiter aspects both Scorpio (the 7th house) and Capricorn (where Mars sits): until 31 October 2026, and again from 25 January to 26 June 2027 after it steps back. From Virgo it aspects Capricorn, the 7th lord: 26 November 2027 to 28 February 2028, and 24 July to 26 December 2028. From Leo it touches neither. Saturn in Pisces touches neither point; in Aries it aspects Capricorn, the 7th lord, from 3 June to 20 October 2027 and again from 23 February 2028.

So "both at once" happens three times in these tables: 3 to 26 June 2027 (about three weeks, before Jupiter moves on to Leo), a few days at the end of February 2028, and 24 July to 26 December 2028, when Jupiter in Virgo and Saturn in Aries both aspect the 7th lord. If her Jupiter antardasha begins about now, its two and a half years cover all of these. A careful reader would call the antardasha supportive, point to the second half of 2028 as the fullest transit support and mid-2027 as a brief one, and stop there. That is the kind of answer the method honestly gives: overlapping ranges, not a day.

What the method cannot do

• It gives windows, not dates. Even a textbook dasha-plus-double-transit period lasts many months.
• Life decides more. Education, work, family circumstances, where you live and above all your own choice shape the timing far more than any planet. Plenty of people marry outside their "window" and are happy.
• There is no "delay dosha". Saturn on the 7th is described in texts as slowness and seriousness, not denial. Please do not let anyone sell you a ritual to "remove a marriage obstacle". No remedy is required; if you wish, prayer, charity or caring for elders are free and optional.
• Manglik is not a reason for delay. It is a matching consideration that applies to about half of all charts and has several classical cancellations; see our Manglik dosha guide.
• The birth time matters. One hour of error moves every dasha date by roughly three and a half months and can change the lagna.
