In a kundli, career is read mainly from the 10th house, its lord, the planets in it and the D10 (dasamsa) chart, with the 6th house for service, the 2nd and 11th for income and the 3rd for effort. Timing comes from the dashas of those same planets, confirmed by Saturn and Jupiter moving over or aspecting the 10th house.
This guide sets out the classical method, then shows how astrologers tell a new job, a promotion and a move into business apart, and ends with what astrology honestly cannot do for a career. Step 1: the career houses
Astrologers do not read one house for work. They read a group:

The 10th house leads. Look at its sign, the planets sitting in it and the planets aspecting it. Planets in the 10th are among the strongest career indicators in a chart; a kendra is a house of action, and a planet here tends to show itself in public work. Step 2: the 10th lord
Next find the 10th lord, the planet that rules the sign on the 10th house, and read:
- Where it sits. In a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) or trikona (1, 5, 9) it is strong. In the 6th, 8th or 12th it is harder, though a 10th lord in the 6th often fits service jobs well.
- Its dignity. Own sign or exalted is strong; debilitated is weak unless cancelled.
- Its connections. A link between the 10th lord and the 9th lord (fortune), the 11th lord (gains) or the lagna lord (self) is read as supportive.
The classical livelihood rule. Brihat Jataka's chapter on livelihood reads the source of earnings from the planets in the 10th house counted from the lagna, the Moon and the Sun. If none of those 10th houses holds a planet, it looks at the lord of the navamsa sign occupied by the 10th lord. It is an old and specific rule, and a good example of how the texts actually work: by method, not by slogan.
Step 3: the career karakas
Some planets signify kinds of work by nature (karaka), whatever houses they rule. Classical lists name the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn as significators of the 10th house:
- Saturn: work itself, service, discipline, labour, long careers, structures. Saturn is often called the karaka of karma (action).
- The Sun: authority, government, administration, leadership.
- Mercury: trade, commerce, accounts, writing, communication, technology.
- Jupiter: teaching, law, finance, advice, religious and counselling roles.
Other planets add colour: Mars for engineering, the police, the armed forces and surgery; Venus for the arts, design, fashion and hospitality; the Moon for dealing with the public, care and food. These are traditional associations, not job descriptions. A strong Mercury does not make someone an accountant; it suggests work that suits a Mercurial mind.
Step 4: the D10 (dasamsa) chart
BPHS assigns the dasamsa (D10), the tenth division of each sign, to one's actions and achievements in the world. Our kundli computes all sixteen divisional charts, D10 among them. Astrologers read:
- The D10 lagna and its lord.
- The 10th house of the D10 and any planets there.
- Where the birth chart's 10th lord falls in the D10, and its dignity there.
A 10th lord that is weak in the birth chart but strong in the D10 is read as a career that improves with effort and time. D10 depends heavily on the birth time: its sign changes every twelve minutes of lagna motion or so, so a rough birth time makes it unreliable.
Step 5: timing — which dasha brings a job or a change
The Vimshottari dasha (fully explained in our mahadasha and antardasha guide) is the main timing tool. For career, the antardashas usually read as active are those of:
- The 10th lord.
- Planets in the 10th house.
- The 6th lord, especially for getting a job or clearing a competitive exam.
- Planets in or lords of the 11th (and the 2nd) for income and rises in pay.
- The D10 lagna lord, and the karaka that best fits the field.
When the mahadasha lord and the antardasha lord are both on this list, astrologers treat the period as a real window.
Transit confirmation. Saturn moving through or aspecting the 10th house is traditionally a time of heavier responsibility and hard, lasting work; Jupiter doing so is read as growth and recognition. Many astrologers apply the modern "double transit" idea here too: both touching the 10th house or its lord at once.
Per our engine (Lahiri ayanamsa), Jupiter enters Leo on 31 October 2026, steps back into Cancer while retrograde from 25 January to 26 June 2027, returns to Leo until 26 November 2027 and then moves into Virgo. Saturn enters Aries on 3 June 2027, steps back into Pisces from 20 October 2027 and re-enters Aries on 23 February 2028. Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself (from Leo: Sagittarius, Aquarius and Aries); Saturn the 3rd, 7th and 10th (from Aries: Gemini, Libra and Capricorn). Find these signs in your chart and see whether any is your 10th house or holds your 10th lord.
A made-up example: for a Scorpio lagna, Leo is the 10th house, so Jupiter transits the 10th itself from 31 October 2026 to 25 January 2027, from 26 June to 26 November 2027, and from 28 February to 24 July 2028. The 10th lord is the Sun; suppose this invented chart has the Sun in Capricorn. Saturn in Aries aspects Capricorn from 3 June to 20 October 2027 and again from 23 February 2028, and in those months it also transits this chart's 6th house, the house of service and competition. Jupiter in the 10th and Saturn on the 10th lord together: 26 June to 20 October 2027, when Saturn steps back into Pisces, and again 28 February to 24 July 2028. (Jupiter in Cancer or Virgo also aspects Capricorn, so a looser reading makes these ranges longer still. Jupiter's three aspects touch something in most charts much of the time, which is another reason to read transits as ranges.) Check the Jupiter transit page and the Saturn transit page for every ingress. A reader would call these supportive windows for career responsibility, and nothing more precise than that.
Job change, promotion or business?
Astrologers use working conventions here, and they vary between schools, so hold them lightly:
- A first job or a new job: the 6th house (service, the selection process) and the 10th together, often in a period of the 6th or 10th lord.
- Promotion or a pay rise: the 10th with the 11th (gains) and the 2nd (earned money).
- A change of job or field: periods where the 10th links with houses of movement and endings; different astrologers use the 3rd, 9th or 12th here.
- Starting a business: the 7th house (clients, partners, trade) with the 10th, the 3rd for initiative, and Mercury for commerce. For a launch date, muhurat has a business-start purpose.
What astrology cannot do for your career
- It cannot replace effort or skill. A strong 10th house without preparation stays a strong 10th house on paper. The exam, the interview and the work are yours.
- It is not career counselling. A kundli describes tendencies. A counsellor, a mentor or people working in the field will tell you far more about a specific path.
- It gives windows, not dates. No chart can promise a job on a date or a salary.
- It is not financial advice. Please do not resign, invest or borrow because of a dasha or a transit.
- No remedy is needed. Nobody should pay for a ritual to "unblock" a career. If you wish, charity, caring for elders or a daily prayer are free and optional.
