The 10th house in Vedic astrology is the house of career, status, reputation and one's actions in the world. Called karma bhava, it is the most powerful kendra, an upachaya house that strengthens with time, and it has four karakas: the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn.
Karma here means action, not fate. The 10th asks what you do and how the world sees you doing it. A job is part of that, but so is public duty, a craft practised over a lifetime or the work of running a household.
What the 10th house governs
- Career and profession: the field of work and the way one works in it.
- Status and reputation: public standing, honours, how one is remembered.
- Authority: dealings with those above, and one's own capacity to lead.
- Action and duty: the deeds one is known for, including social and religious duties.
- In some South Indian practice, the father: BPHS gives him to the 9th, and many astrologers read both houses.
In the natural zodiac the tenth sign is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, where Mars is exalted. The kalapurusha assigns it the knees, which bend to work and carry weight. The 10th belongs to the artha (livelihood) group with the 2nd and 6th.
The four karakas
Having four karakas is unusual, and each covers a different side of working life:
- The Sun: government, authority, position, recognition.
- Mercury: commerce, accounts, writing, skill with language and detail.
- Jupiter: teaching, advice, law, the wisdom and ethics brought to work.
- Saturn: sustained labour, service, organisation, the ability to keep going.
A reading looks at all four, then at which is strongest. A chart with a dignified Mercury and a weak Sun leans towards trade and skill rather than office and command.
Kendra and upachaya together
As a kendra, the 10th is where planets act most visibly. The Sun and Mars gain digbala (directional strength) here, at the top of the sky. Natural benefics in kendras bring steadiness; if Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn sits in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra, it forms one of the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas.
As an upachaya (3, 6, 10, 11), the 10th improves with effort and age. Natural malefics such as Saturn or Mars are traditionally counted as working well here, turning drive into achievement. It is also why career readings rarely judge the early years alone.
How to read the 10th house, step by step
- The sign on the 10th. With whole-sign houses, it is the tenth sign from your lagna. A movable sign often points to work with travel or change; a fixed sign to steady, long-term roles; a dual sign to more than one line of work.
- The 10th lord. Its house shows where career energy goes. In the 7th, work through partners or clients; in the 11th, work that brings gains and networks; in the 5th, work linked to learning, children or creativity; in the 9th, teaching, law or faith.
- Planets in the 10th. Each adds its karakatva. The Sun brings authority, the Moon public contact, Mars technical or command roles, Venus art, design and hospitality, Rahu unusual, modern or foreign fields.
- Aspects. Saturn aspects the 10th from the lagna with its special 10th aspect. Planets in the 4th aspect the 10th directly.
- The karakas. Judge all four as above.
- Timing. The dasha of the 10th lord or of planets in the 10th often marks career turns; gochar of Saturn and Jupiter over the 10th adds detail.
- From the Moon and the Sun. Classical texts also count the 10th from the Moon and from the Sun, and Phaladeepika suggests reading the profession from the strongest of the three.
The dashamsha (D10)
The dashamsha divides each sign into ten parts and is the classical chart of career and standing. Astrologers check the D10 lagna, the 10th house and its lord in the D10, and how the birth chart's 10th lord is placed there. A promise in the birth chart that is supported in the D10 is read with more confidence.
Common misreadings
The first is naming a single job from the 10th. Astrology speaks in fields and tendencies. Mars in the 10th may show engineering, surgery, sport, policing or management; the rest of the chart chooses among them, and so does the person.
The second is fearing a 10th lord in a dusthana. The 10th lord in the 6th often shows service, healthcare, law or competitive work; in the 12th, work abroad, in institutions or behind the scenes. These are directions, not failures.
The third is ignoring age. Upachaya houses mature. A slow start is common for a strong Saturn in the 10th, and tradition expects results to build.
And in every case, one factor never decides a chart. The 10th is read with the 2nd (income), the 6th (daily service) and the 11th (gains), and with the whole kundli.
A worked example, in general terms
Take a Gemini lagna. The 10th is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. Pisces on the 10th tends to point to advisory, teaching, healing or creative work. If Jupiter sits in the 7th in Sagittarius, its own sign, the career may run through clients, partners or consultation, and Jupiter in a kendra in its own sign forms Hamsa yoga, one of the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. If the Sun sits in the 10th, the person may also be drawn to positions of responsibility.
The D10 then confirms or tempers this picture, and the Jupiter dasha shows when it is likely to unfold.
