The fourth house, sukha bhava, is the house of the mother, home, land, vehicles, schooling and, above all, inner contentment. It sits at the bottom of the chart, the point of midnight, and describes the private ground a person stands on when nobody is watching.
What the fourth house governs
Sukha means happiness or ease, and the fourth house is read as the source of that ease. Its classical themes are:
- Mother and the nurturing she gives; also the emotional climate of the childhood home.
- Home, land and fixed property, including the house one lives in and the land one owns.
- Vehicles and comforts, the things that make life easier.
- Schooling and formal education up to the foundational level; higher study is shared with the 5th and 9th.
- Bandhu, relatives and the wider circle one feels at home with, which is why some texts call it bandhu bhava.
- The heart and chest in the Kalapurusha body map, and by extension peace of mind.
It is a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10), so planets here are strong and their effects are felt directly. It is also the first of the moksha houses (4, 8, 12): the 4th is the peace that comes from within, the first step toward release.
Karaka and digbala
The Moon is the natural karaka of the fourth house, the planet of the mother and of the mind. The Moon and Venus both gain digbala (directional strength) here, which is why a well-placed Moon or Venus in the 4th is read as a real source of comfort and emotional steadiness. Many astrologers also consider Mercury for education, Venus for vehicles and Mars for land; this is common practice layered on top of the classical karaka.
The Sun, by contrast, has its directional strength in the 10th house, exactly opposite, and so is sometimes described as less comfortable in the 4th. That is a tendency, not a verdict.
Reading the fourth house step by step
- The sign on the 4th. A fixed sign tends to show stable roots and long residence; a movable sign more moves and changes of home; a dual sign often two homes or a divided sense of belonging.
- The fourth lord. Follow it. In a kendra or trikona it generally supports home life. In the 10th, the home and career are linked, and some people work from home or in real estate. In the 12th, home may be abroad or far from the birthplace. In the 9th, a home shaped by faith or a father's influence. In the 11th, gains through property.
- Planets in the 4th. The Moon or Venus give comfort and attachment to home. Jupiter gives a learned or generous household. Mars in the 4th is also one of the placements counted for manglik status, and in Cancer it is debilitated; tradition reads it as energy at home that asks for channelling. Saturn can bring responsibility for the home or a later sense of settling. Rahu or Ketu can describe restlessness about roots.
- Aspects. Mars aspects the 4th from the 1st and 9th; Jupiter from the 8th and 12th; Saturn from the 2nd and 7th; any planet in the 10th looks at it directly.
- The karaka. Check the Moon: waxing or waning, its sign, its nakshatra and its company. A strong Moon supports fourth-house peace even when the house is mixed.
- The dasha. Dashas of the fourth lord or planets in the 4th often coincide with moving house, buying property or a vehicle, or more time with the mother.
- From the Moon. Count the 4th from the Moon. Saturn transiting the 4th from the Moon is the phase tradition calls kantaka shani or dhaiya, usually read as a time to be patient with domestic matters.
Divisional chart
The chaturthamsha (D4) is the classical divisional chart for property and fixed assets, and some astrologers use it for general fortune in residence. Education is sometimes examined in the siddhamsha (D24). Both are read after the main chart; a divisional chart can refine a promise but not create one the birth chart lacks.
The 4th–10th axis
The 4th (home, roots) sits opposite the 10th (career, public life). Much of adult life is a balance between these two, and planets on this axis often show where that balance is hard or easy. A strong 10th with a strained 4th may describe a person who gives everything to work and must consciously make space for home; the reverse describes someone whose private life is rich but who is slower to seek public roles.
Common misreadings
- "The 4th house is only property." Property is a visible theme, but contentment is the heart of the house. Someone with modest property and a strong 4th can feel deeply at ease.
- "Mars in the 4th ruins home life." It can bring heat or activity at home, but many people with this placement are protective and hands-on about the household. The whole chart, and the cancellations discussed in manglik dosha explained, matter.
- "A weak 4th means a poor relationship with the mother." The house shows themes and experience, not blame. The Moon, the fourth lord and the 4th from the Moon all need to agree before drawing any conclusion.
General examples
A chart with the Moon strong in the 4th and the fourth lord in a trikona is traditionally read as a warm home and a steady inner life. A chart with the fourth lord in the 12th often describes someone who builds their home far from where they were born, and whose sense of belonging deepens over time.
