The Sun in the 4th house places the planet of the self and authority in the house of home, mother, land, vehicles and inner contentment. It is the one house where the Sun loses its directional strength, so tradition reads it as a Sun that shines inwards: dignity is built privately, and public recognition tends to come later and through steady foundations.

From the 4th, the Sun's full 7th aspect (drishti) falls on the 10th house: career, status and public action, and the very house where the Sun would have its full digbala. The Sun cannot stand there, but it looks there.
Tradition takes this as ambition that grows from a private base. Work may involve the home, property, land, education or family enterprise, and recognition tends to arrive after foundations are laid. A strong Sun here can give a respected career rooted in one place; a weak one can make work feel like a pull away from home.
The 4th lord and the Sun's own lordship
The lord of the 4th sign shows how well-supported the house is. If the Sun is in Aquarius, for instance, Saturn as 4th lord decides much; a strong Saturn gives stable property and a patient home life.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the principles used here: the 4th as the house of the mother, home, vehicles and happiness, the Moon as its karaka, the Sun's digbala in the 10th and lack of it in the 4th, and the Sun's single full aspect. Traditional authors who give results house by house tend to describe the Sun in the 4th starkly, with limited comforts, friction with relatives, and trouble over land or vehicles. These lines were written for a planet read in isolation, and a Leo or Aries 4th, a strong 4th lord or a supportive Moon changes them considerably.
Common misreadings
- Treating zero digbala as a verdict. It is one of several strengths; sign dignity, aspects and lordship can more than make up for it.
- Blaming the Sun for the mother's life. The mother is read primarily from the Moon and the 4th lord.
- Ignoring the 10th. The aspect on career is central to this placement.
- Reading only the Moon chart. The Moon-sign view is a second lens, not a substitute for the birth chart from the lagna.
