Ketu in the 4th house places the node of detachment in the house of home, mother, land, vehicles and inner contentment. It tends to make the person less rooted than most: the birthplace may not feel like home, residences change, and happiness is sought inward rather than in property or comfort.
Because the 4th is also the house of the heart's ease (sukha), Ketu here often raises the question "where do I belong?" and, over a lifetime, answers it with something other than an address.

- Schooling that was interrupted, unconventional, or followed by study of a subject far from the family's expectations.
The karaka of the 4th is the Moon, the mind and the mother. Ketu is not the karaka here, but its relationship with the Moon matters: Ketu, with Rahu, is the node that eclipses the lights. A strong, well-supported Moon usually keeps the inner life steady despite outer change.

The sign in the 4th
Ketu owns no sign in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and follows its dispositor and the planets with it. In the 4th, the dispositor is the 4th lord, ruler of home and comfort.
Ketu's dignity is disputed: exaltation in Scorpio or Sagittarius, debilitation in Taurus or Gemini. Four lagnas put these signs in the 4th:
- Leo lagna: Scorpio in the 4th, a candidate for Ketu's exaltation. Mars, its lord, is yogakaraka for Leo, so this can give an inward, research-minded home life with a strong base.
- Virgo lagna: Sagittarius in the 4th, the other candidate; the home may be a place of study, teaching or religious life.
- Aquarius lagna: Taurus in the 4th, a sign some call Ketu's debilitation. Comfort may be harder to settle into, with Venus's strength making the difference.
- Pisces lagna: Gemini in the 4th, the other candidate for debilitation; Mercury's condition shapes the restlessness of mind.
Because the dignity labels are not agreed, a careful reading says which convention it follows and gives most weight to the 4th lord.

Ketu in the 4th always means Rahu in the 10th. This is one of the clearest node axes in the chart: private life on one end, public life on the other. Ketu rules no house for any lagna, so what changes is the 4th lord it borrows from.

Phaladeepika is among the texts that set out Ketu's results in each house. For the 4th, traditional authors tend to describe loss of comfort, trouble concerning the mother or property, and living in other people's houses or away from home. These describe an unsupported Ketu; a strong 4th lord, a strong Moon or a benefic aspect on the 4th changes the reading considerably.
Common misreadings
- Reading it as a verdict on the mother. Ketu here describes the person's experience of closeness, not the mother's fate.
- Forgetting the 10th house. Rahu in the 10th is the other half of this axis and often the more visible one.
- Assuming no property. Many people with Ketu in the 4th own homes; they simply hold them lightly.
