The Moon in the 4th house places the graha of the mind in the house of home, mother, land, vehicles and inner contentment. It is the Moon's position of full directional strength, and tradition reads it as a person whose peace depends on having a real home, who stays close to the mother or to a mothering figure, and who is at their best when they feel emotionally safe.
Few placements match planet and house so exactly. The Moon is the natural karaka of the 4th, the kalapurusha 4th sign is Cancer, its own sign, and its digbala is in the 4th. All three point to the same place.
What the Moon brings to the house of home
The 4th house, sukha or bandhu bhava, covers the mother, the family home, property and land, vehicles, basic schooling and sukha itself, the quiet sense that life is all right. With the Moon here:
- Home as the centre. The person tends to invest a great deal in where they live: its comfort, its food, its people. Moving house can feel like a big emotional event.
- The mother's influence. The relationship with the mother is usually warm and formative. In many charts she is the person who shaped the native's inner world most.
- Contentment as a skill. A bright Moon here often gives an unusual ability to feel settled with little. A weak one can make the person restless until the home situation is right.
- Roots and belonging. Attachment to one's hometown, land or community is common, and some people with this placement work in property, hospitality, food or care.
The 4th is a kendra, so a strong planet here acts openly on the whole life. It is also the bottom of the chart, the most private point, which suits a graha of feeling.
The karaka in its own house
There is a later rule of thumb, karako bhava nashaya, that a karaka placed alone in its own house may weaken that house. It is applied with many exceptions, and few astrologers use it for the Moon in the 4th, where the planet is also directionally strong. When it is quoted, it is usually read gently: the person may feel so bound to home that leaving it, or losing a parent's closeness, affects them deeply. It is not a prediction of loss.

Houses are counted whole-sign from the lagna, and many astrologers check the same themes again from the Moon sign. The sign in your 4th depends on your rising sign:
- Aries lagna: the 4th is Cancer. The Moon is in its own sign, is the 4th lord in the 4th, and has digbala. This is about as strong as the Moon gets in a house of its own significations.
- Aquarius lagna: the 4th is Taurus, the Moon's exaltation and moolatrikona. For Aquarius rising the Moon rules the 6th, so a very strong Moon in the home can also bring the effort and service of the 6th into domestic life.
- Leo lagna: the 4th is Scorpio, where the Moon is debilitated, and it rules the 12th. Digbala partly offsets the weakness, and neecha-bhanga may cancel it. The home life can be deeply felt and private.
Even exalted or in its own sign in a kendra, the Moon does not form a Mahapurusha yoga; those five yogas belong only to Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. In the signs of the Sun and Mercury the Moon is among friends, and in the rest it is neutral.
What the Moon aspects from the 4th
From the 4th the Moon's full 7th aspect (drishti) falls on the 10th house: career, status and public reputation. The Moon rules the public, so this often gives work that meets people or serves them, and a reputation built on care and reliability. Career may also be influenced by family, or run from home. If the Sun sits in the 10th, opposite the Moon, the Moon is full, and home and work pull in two directions that both want attention.

- Libra lagna: the Moon rules the 10th and sits in Capricorn, aspecting its own sign in the 10th. Home and career are strongly linked; the person may work from home, in property, or in a family business.
- Scorpio lagna: the Moon rules the 9th, a trikona, and sits in Aquarius. The lord of fortune in a kendra is a helpful link, and faith or a teacher's influence often comes through the family.
- Capricorn lagna: the Moon rules the 7th and sits in Aries, so the spouse and the home are closely tied.

What the classical texts say
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the principles: the 4th as the house of mother, home and happiness; the Moon as its karaka; the Moon's digbala in the 4th; its dignities and 7th aspect. Traditional authors who list house results tend to speak well of a strong Moon here, associating it with comforts, vehicles, friends and a happy home, and qualify it when the Moon is waning or afflicted. Common misreadings
- Reading karako bhava nashaya as a fixed rule. It is a heuristic with many exceptions, and digbala changes the picture here.
- Assuming the mother is always easy. A strong 4th-house Moon shows a strong bond; the tone of that bond still depends on the chart.
- Ignoring the phase. A dim Moon near the Sun still has digbala but gives a quieter, more inward domestic life.
- Mixing systems. Tropical houses are counted differently; the Moon may not be in the 4th there.
