Libra, called Tula rashi in Sanskrit and Hindi, is the seventh sign of the sidereal zodiac, spanning 180° to 210°, and it is ruled by Venus. It is a movable air sign whose symbol is a man holding a pair of scales, and it is the sign where Saturn is exalted and the Sun is debilitated.
When someone in India says "my rashi is Tula", they almost always mean the Moon was in Libra at their birth. That is the janma rashi, and it drives the daily Libra rashifal, naming syllables and matching. Libra can also be your lagna (the sign rising at birth) or the sign of your Sun, and each of those says something different. If you are not sure which is which, a free kundli shows all three.
Air, movement and Venus together
Each rashi is a blend of an element, a quality and a lord, and Libra's blend explains most of what is said about it.
Air (tatva) is the element of contact, thought and exchange. Air signs are drawn to ideas and to other people. The movable (chara) quality adds initiative: Libra does not wait for balance to arrive, it goes out and arranges it. And Venus, the lord, is the planet of pleasure, beauty, agreement and partnership.
Put together, Libra is the sign of the negotiated middle. It weighs, compares and looks for the arrangement in which everyone gets something. The scales in its symbol are carried by a man standing in a marketplace in some classical descriptions, which is a useful picture: this is balance as a practical, social act, not a still ideal.
Libra is also the seventh sign counted from Aries. In the idea of the Kalapurusha, the cosmic person whose body the zodiac maps, the seventh sign mirrors the seventh house: marriage, contracts and dealings with the public. That link colours the whole sign.
The nakshatras in Libra
Three nakshatras share Libra, and a Libra Moon takes much of its flavour from which one it sits in.
- Chitra, padas 3 and 4 (180° to 186°40′). Ruled by Mars, presided over by the divine craftsman Tvashtr. Chitra adds an eye for design and finish, and a little more edge than Libra usually shows.
- Swati, all four padas (186°40′ to 200°). Ruled by Rahu, presided over by Vayu, the wind. Swati is the most purely "Libran" portion: independent, adaptable, fond of trade and travel, bending like a young shoot without breaking.
- Vishakha, padas 1 to 3 (200° to 210°). Ruled by Jupiter, presided over by Indra and Agni together. Vishakha brings purpose and ambition, a focus on a goal that can make Libra more single-minded than its reputation.
Typical nature and strengths
Descriptions of a Libra Moon in the classical texts, and in the experience of astrologers since, return to a few themes:
- Fairness. A strong wish that things be just and proportionate, and discomfort when they are not.
- Diplomacy. Skill in seeing another person's side and finding words both sides can accept.
- Taste. Interest in beauty, art, dress, music and pleasant surroundings, which is Venus at work.
- Sociability. Energy that rises in company; many Libra natives think best when talking something through.
- Trade and exchange. The scales are also a merchant's tool, and the classical texts link Libra with commerce and dealing.
Growth areas
The same qualities have a shadow side worth knowing about, framed here as tendencies, not fixed traits.
Weighing every side can slow decisions, and a wish to keep the peace can make it hard to say an unwelcome thing plainly. Some Libra natives learn, over time, that a fair relationship includes their own needs too, and that disagreement handled well is not a failure of harmony. Dependence on the approval of others is the other lesson the sign often works through.

Venus, the seventh-sign link and the air element make relationships central for most Libra natives, whether romantic, business or friendship.

As tendencies, not promises, Libra is associated with work that involves people and judgement: law and mediation, trade and sales, design, fashion, the arts, hospitality, counselling and diplomacy. Which of these actually shows up depends on the tenth house, its lord and the running dasha, not on the Moon sign alone.
Libra as lagna and as Moon sign
As the Moon sign, Libra describes the mind: how you feel, react and relate. Transits such as sade sati and the monthly rashifal are counted from it.
As the lagna, Libra describes the body, the outward manner and the direction of life. For a Libra ascendant, Saturn rules the fourth and fifth houses, a kendra and a trikona together, which makes Saturn a yogakaraka, the most helpful planet for this rising sign in the Parashari scheme. Venus rules both the first and the eighth houses, so it carries mixed results. Jupiter, lord of the third and sixth, is usually considered less supportive for Libra lagna despite being a natural benefic. As always, placement and strength change the picture; one factor never decides a chart, and the whole kundli is read together.
Exaltation and debilitation in Libra
Saturn is exalted (uchcha) in Libra, deepest at 20°. A common way of explaining it is that Saturn, the planet of duty, law and patience, does its best work where fairness and proportion are valued. An exalted Saturn often shows as steadiness and a sense of justice.
The Sun is debilitated (neecha) here, deepest at 10°. The Sun is the self and authority, and Libra is the sign of the other person; the self has to share the stage. A debilitated Sun is not a verdict: it can be modified by neecha-bhanga, by Venus's condition, and by the rest of the chart.
Venus has its moolatrikona in Libra from 0° to 15°, and owns the whole sign. Where traditions differ, it tends to be on smaller points; Libra's main dignities are agreed across the major texts.
Neighbouring signs
