Sidereal Libra, the Tula of Vedic astrology, is marked out with the Lahiri ayanamsa and lies about 24 degrees behind the Western, tropical Libra. As a result a Western "Ketu in Scorpio" very often sits in sidereal Libra, and a Western Libra Ketu is often back in Virgo. Ketu in Tula places the node of detachment in Venus's sign of balance, partnership and trade, and is usually read as someone who is fair and gracious with others yet does not lean on any one relationship for a sense of self.
Weighing without wanting
Libra is air, movable (chara), odd and masculine, the natural 7th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the lower abdomen and the west. Its symbol is a man holding scales, weighing goods in the market. It governs partnership, contracts, diplomacy, beauty and exchange. Ketu, the headless body, acts on instinct and holds loosely. Traditional readings of Ketu in Tula tend to describe:
- An even-handed, sometimes detached manner. The person can mediate because they are not heavily invested in winning.
- Independence within relationships. Closeness is valued, but so is space; dependence feels uncomfortable.
- Unusual partnerships. A partner from a different background, or relationships that follow no standard script.
- A natural eye for proportion. Ketu's inherited skill in Venus's air sign can show in design, law, negotiation or music.
- Lower abdomen as the sign's body area, only a gentle traditional note.
Dignity and Venus
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra assigns Ketu no sign. The later dispute about its exaltation is between Scorpio and Sagittarius, and some texts make Ketu co-ruler of Scorpio. Libra is not part of it, so the dignity here is not fixed.
That leaves Venus, the sign lord, as the main guide. A strong Venus lets this Ketu express refinement, tact and an easy detachment in love. A troubled Venus can make relationships feel unsatisfying or leave the person unsure what they want from them. Other planets in Libra with Ketu change the tone sharply; Saturn, which is exalted in Libra, gives a very different result beside Ketu than the Sun, which is debilitated here.
Chitra, Swati and Vishakha
- Chitra (padas 3 and 4, 0° to 6°40′, lord Mars): design and making. A craftsmanlike Ketu with an eye for form.
- Swati (6°40′ to 20°, lord Rahu): the young shoot moved by the wind. Ketu sits in the nakshatra of its own opposite node, so the Rahu–Ketu axis is especially active; tradition links Swati with independence, trade and freedom of movement.
- Vishakha (padas 1 to 3, 20° to 30°, lord Jupiter): the forked branch, single-minded pursuit of a goal. Here Ketu often detaches from one aim only to commit fully to another.
Which house it becomes
- Libra lagna: the 1st house, with Venus as lagna lord.
- Aries lagna: the 7th house, Libra's natural place; see Ketu in the 7th house.
- Cancer lagna: the 4th house of home and mother.
- Gemini lagna: the 5th house of children, study and creativity.
- Aquarius lagna: the 9th house, where Venus is the yogakaraka.
- Capricorn lagna: the 10th house; here too Venus is the yogakaraka, and Ketu in its sign in a kendra borrows some of that promise.
Rahu in Aries
Ketu in Libra means Rahu in Aries. Ketu steps back from compromise and pleasing others; Rahu pushes towards self-assertion, initiative and doing things one's own way. Many people with this axis spend part of life learning to stand alone after long being the accommodating one. Ketu's 7th aspect, where it is used, also falls on Aries, while the 5th and 9th aspects of the nodes are disputed.
Ketu's transit through Libra
Moving backwards, Ketu enters Libra from Scorpio and leaves for Virgo, usually after about 1 year 6 months; the dates are listed above. The passage is traditionally read as a time when partnerships, contracts and the balance of give and take are re-examined. Classical gochar rules count the nodes as helpful in the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon, so Leo, Taurus and Sagittarius Moon signs usually find it easier. The live position is on the Ketu transit page.
In Ketu's dasha
The seven-year Ketu mahadasha often brings Libra themes forward: a change in how one partners in love or business, more independence, and a sharper sense of what is fair to oneself.
Where readers go wrong
- Reading it as a marriage prediction. The sign colours style; the 7th house, 7th lord, Venus and navamsa decide marriage.
- Mixing up zodiacs. Check that your Ketu is in sidereal Libra.
- Ignoring conjunctions and dasha. They can turn the same sign placement in very different directions.
