Pisces on this site is sidereal Meena, which the Lahiri ayanamsa places about 24 degrees behind tropical Pisces. That is why a Western "Ketu in Aries" is often Ketu in sidereal Pisces, and why a Western Pisces Ketu commonly belongs to Aquarius. Meena is the last sign of the zodiac and Jupiter's watery home, and Ketu here, the node of moksha in the sign of release, is usually read as a quiet, imaginative and spiritually inclined nature that finds it easy to let go.
Two fish, head to tail
Pisces is water, dual (dvisvabhava), even and feminine, the natural 12th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the feet and the north. Its symbol is two fish swimming head to tail, a circle without a start or finish. It governs retreat, sleep, dreams, charity, foreign lands, expenditure and final liberation. Ketu, the headless body, is the classic karaka of moksha. Traditional readings describe:
- A natural inwardness. Meditation, prayer, music or solitude come easily and feel restorative.
- Compassion without attachment. Help is given freely, often to strangers, with no need to be thanked.
- Imagination and intuition. Dreams, symbols and feelings carry real information for this person.
- Loose boundaries. The same openness can make it hard to say no or to stay organised; that is the practical lesson.
- Feet as the sign's body part, only a gentle traditional association.
Dignity and Jupiter
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Ketu no sign of its own. Ketu's exaltation is disputed between Scorpio and Sagittarius, and some texts make it co-ruler of Scorpio. Pisces is not part of that debate, so the dignity here is not fixed. People sometimes call Pisces "good for Ketu", and they mean its themes, not a formal rank.
The sign lord is Jupiter, which also rules Sagittarius, one of the two signs proposed for Ketu's exaltation. A strong Jupiter gives this Ketu wisdom, faith and a steady spiritual life. A weakened Jupiter can leave the same openness unanchored, drifting between ideas or commitments. Conjunctions tell a lot too; Venus, exalted in Pisces, beside Ketu is read very differently from Mercury, which is debilitated here.
Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati
- Purva Bhadrapada (pada 4, 0° to 3°20′, lord Jupiter): the last quarter of an intense, ascetic star. A fervent start.
- Uttara Bhadrapada (3°20′ to 16°40′, lord Saturn): the deep serpent of the waters. Ketu here tends to be calm, disciplined and capable of long spiritual practice.
- Revati (16°40′ to 30°, lord Mercury): the shepherd who guides travellers home. A gentle, protective Ketu. The final degree of Pisces is a gandanta point, where the zodiac's water ends and Ashwini, Ketu's own star, begins.
Which house for your lagna
- Pisces lagna: the 1st house, with Jupiter as lagna lord.
- Aries lagna: the 12th house, Pisces's natural place and the traditional seat of moksha; read Ketu in the 12th house.
- Scorpio lagna: the 5th house of mantra, study and children.
- Sagittarius lagna: the 4th house, with Jupiter as lagna lord and 4th lord.
- Virgo lagna: the 7th house, with Rahu rising in Virgo.
- Cancer lagna: the 9th house of fortune and teachers, where Jupiter rules the 9th; a trikona.
- Gemini lagna: the 10th house; work may involve service, healing, distant places or behind-the-scenes roles.
Rahu in Virgo
Ketu in Pisces always places Rahu in Virgo. Ketu dissolves; Rahu wants to organise, analyse, fix and serve in concrete ways. Many people with this axis are dreamers who find their footing through practical work, routines or a service profession. Ketu's 7th aspect, where it is counted, also falls on Virgo; the 5th and 9th aspects of the nodes are disputed.
Ketu's transit through Pisces
Ketu moves backwards, entering Pisces from Aries and moving on to Aquarius, usually after about 1 year 6 months; the dates are listed above. The passage is traditionally read as a time for retreat, rest, charity and spiritual interest, and some people travel or live away from home for a while. Capricorn, Libra and Taurus Moon signs, for whom Pisces is the 3rd, 6th or 11th, usually find it easier under the classical node rule. Follow it on the Ketu transit page.
In Ketu's dasha
In the seven-year Ketu mahadasha, Pisces Ketu often draws a person towards meditation, pilgrimage, quiet service or a simpler life, sometimes after a period of uncertainty about direction.
Common misreadings
- Calling Pisces Ketu's exaltation. No classical tradition does.
- Assuming withdrawal from life. Most people with this Ketu live ordinary, engaged lives with a strong inner side.
- Reading the sign alone. Jupiter, the house, conjunctions, navamsa and dasha decide the result.
