This page is about sidereal Pisces (Meena), the sign used in Vedic astrology, which the Lahiri ayanamsa anchors to the stars about 24 degrees behind the Pisces of Western, tropical charts. As a result, many people with a Western "Venus in Pisces" have Venus in Aquarius in their kundli, and a good number with a Western Aries Venus actually have it exalted here. In the sidereal chart Venus in Pisces is exalted: the planet of love and beauty reaches its highest dignity in Jupiter's water sign, and love tends toward compassion, devotion and a deep feeling for art and music.
Love that dissolves the self
Venus is the karaka of love, marriage, art, beauty, comfort and vehicles. Pisces is water, dual (dvisvabhava), even and feminine, the 12th and last sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the feet and the north, and symbolised by two fish, head to tail. The 12th is the house of rest, surrender, retreat and moksha. Here Venus's pleasure becomes something gentler and wider: the joy of giving.
What tradition associates with exalted Venus:
- Compassion. Kindness to the vulnerable, forgiveness, a soft heart.
- Devotional art. Music, dance, poetry and painting with spiritual feeling.
- Imagination. Romance with an ideal quality; love that sees the best in others.
- Generous comfort. Hospitality, charity and a love of peaceful, beautiful surroundings.
- The shadow. Idealising partners, difficulty setting boundaries, or escaping into pleasure or fantasy.
Dignity: exaltation, deepest at 27°
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Pisces as Venus's exaltation (uchcha) sign, with the highest point at 27°. The whole sign counts as exalted, with the effect strongest near that degree. It is the mirror of Virgo, where Venus is debilitated at 27°.
A curious detail: Jupiter, the lord of Pisces, regards Venus as an enemy, while Venus regards Jupiter as neutral. Exaltation does not depend on friendship with the sign lord, but the two rival gurus in one sign do give the placement an interesting tension between pleasure and renunciation. Mercury, Venus's friend, is debilitated in Pisces.
Venus stays within about 47 degrees of the Sun, so the Sun is in Pisces or within two signs of it. A combust exalted Venus is still exalted, but many astrologers read its results as quieter; check whether it is asta.
Malavya yoga
Exalted Venus in a kendra from the lagna forms Malavya yoga. From Pisces that happens for Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces lagnas. See the Panch Mahapurush yoga guide for how the yoga's strength is judged.
Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati
- Purva Bhadrapada, pada 4 only (0°–3°20′, lord Jupiter): the intense, idealistic entry into the sign.
- Uttara Bhadrapada, all four padas (3°20′–16°40′, lord Saturn): depth, patience and wisdom. Saturn is Venus's friend, and this stretch is often read as steady, mature, self-controlled love.
- Revati, all four padas (16°40′–30°, lord Mercury): the nourisher and guide of journeys. The deepest exaltation at 27° falls here. Gentle, protective, artistic, and kind to animals and travellers.
The aspect on Virgo
From Pisces, Venus casts its 7th drishti on Virgo, its own sign of debility. The planet at its highest looks across at its lowest; tradition sometimes reads this as idealism that must learn practical care, and as a partner who brings order and attention to detail.
By lagna
Pisces is the natural 12th house, so Venus in the 12th house is the natural parallel, a house where tradition says Venus is surprisingly comfortable: rest, private pleasures, foreign lands and spiritual retreat.
- Sagittarius lagna: Pisces is the 4th house; Venus gains digbala and Malavya yoga together, though it rules the 6th and 11th for this lagna.
- Virgo lagna: Venus, lord of the 2nd and 9th, is exalted in the 7th with Malavya yoga. See Venus in the 7th house.
- Pisces lagna: exalted Venus in the lagna with Malavya yoga, though it rules the 3rd and 8th here.
- Gemini lagna: Venus, lord of the 5th and 12th, is exalted in the 10th with Malavya yoga.
- Aquarius lagna: the yogakaraka is exalted in the 2nd, linking its gifts with family, speech and wealth.
- Capricorn lagna: the yogakaraka is exalted in the 3rd, a house of effort, skill and communication.
The navamsa, aspects and dasha qualify each case.
Venus's transit through Pisces
Normally Venus spends about 25 days in Pisces. When it turns retrograde here it can remain around four months; the site's 50 sampled passes ranged from a little over 24 days to nearly 124. The dates are listed above, and the Venus transit page shows its live position. In gochar, read from your Moon, an exalted Venus transit is traditionally welcomed as a few weeks of ease, kindness and artistic enjoyment in the house it crosses.
Misreadings
- "Exalted means perfect." Exaltation shows strength of nature, not guaranteed outcomes.
- Forgetting the lordship. For Pisces and Sagittarius lagnas, Venus rules difficult houses even while exalted.
- Western Pisces is often sidereal Aquarius. Check first; compare Venus in Virgo, its debilitation.
