Vedic charts use sidereal Sagittarius (Dhanu), which the Lahiri ayanamsa ties to the fixed stars, leaving it roughly 24 degrees behind the tropical Sagittarius of Western astrology. Because of that, a Western "Venus in Sagittarius" is often Venus in Scorpio in the kundli, while a Western Capricorn Venus may sit here. In the sidereal chart Venus in Sagittarius brings love, art and pleasure into Jupiter's fire sign of faith and wide horizons: affection becomes idealistic, open and adventurous, looking for meaning as much as comfort.
The meeting of two teachers
Venus is Shukracharya, guru of the asuras; Jupiter is Brihaspati, guru of the devas. In the Puranas they are rival teachers, and that old story is a helpful key to this placement: Venus's wisdom of pleasure and worldly skill enters the sign of Jupiter's wisdom of dharma and belief.
Sagittarius is fire, dual (dvisvabhava), odd and masculine, the 9th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the thighs and the east. Its symbol is an archer, half man and half horse, aiming high.
Tendencies tradition connects with this Venus:
- Love of freedom. Relationships need room to grow, travel and explore.
- Attraction to difference. Partners from another place, culture, faith or philosophy often appeal.
- Values in love. Honesty and shared principles matter more than luxury.
- Art with a message. Music, writing or teaching that inspires; interest in sacred art, festivals or pilgrim travel.
- The shadow. Restlessness, preaching in relationships, or promising more than one can keep.
Dignity: neutral, with a one-sided coolness
In Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's natural friendship table, Venus regards Jupiter as neutral, while Jupiter regards Venus as an enemy. So Sagittarius is a neutral sign for Venus across its 30 degrees. The host is a little cool toward its guest, but Venus itself carries no grudge.
Jupiter's condition therefore matters. A strong Jupiter gives this Venus wisdom, generosity and a principled heart; a weak or afflicted Jupiter can make it preachy or unrealistic. No Malavya yoga forms from Sagittarius.
Venus is always within about 47 degrees of the Sun, so the Sun is in Sagittarius or within two signs of it; look at whether Venus is asta.
Mula, Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha
- Mula, all four padas (0°–13°20′, lord Ketu): the root. Venus here wants to get to the bottom of things, and may let go of comforts in search of truth. Love can be transformative.
- Purva Ashadha, all four padas (13°20′–26°40′, lord Venus): Venus in its own nakshatra, the "invincible" star of water and renewal. Confidence, charm and persuasive artistic gifts; often the easiest stretch of the sign for Venus.
- Uttara Ashadha, pada 1 only (26°40′–30°, lord Sun): lasting victory and principle. The Sun, Venus's enemy, makes affection dutiful and serious.
The aspect on Gemini
From Sagittarius, Venus's 7th drishti reaches Gemini, the sign of its friend Mercury. The axis of Sagittarius and Gemini pairs belief with information, and this Venus often enjoys partners who are curious, witty and quick in conversation.
By lagna
Sagittarius is the natural 9th house, so Venus in the 9th house is the closest parallel: fortune, higher learning, teachers and long journeys.
- Sagittarius lagna: Venus, lord of the 6th and 11th, sits in the lagna, bringing gains and service themes into the personality.
- Capricorn lagna: the yogakaraka falls in the 12th, a house of rest, foreign lands and private pleasures, where tradition says Venus is unusually at home. See Venus in the 12th house.
- Aquarius lagna: the yogakaraka (lord of the 4th and 9th) sits in the 11th, a house of gains and friendships.
- Gemini lagna: Venus, lord of the 5th and 12th, is in the 7th, aspecting the lagna.
- Virgo lagna: Venus, lord of the 2nd and 9th, is in the 4th, where it has digbala.
- Libra lagna: the lagna lord falls in the 3rd, a house of effort, skill and communication.
The navamsa, conjunctions and dasha change every line.
Venus in transit through Sagittarius
Venus usually crosses Sagittarius in about 24 days. When it turns retrograde in this sign it can remain around four months: the site's 50 sampled passes ranged from just under 24 days to about 121. The dates are listed above, and the Venus transit page shows its live position. In gochar, read from your Moon, the passage is traditionally linked with celebration, travel, learning and hospitality in the relevant house.
Where texts and readers differ
- The two gurus. Some astrologers stress the rivalry and read friction; others see a rich blend of pleasure and principle. Both are interpretations, not rules.
- One-sided enmity. Sign dignity follows how Venus views the sign lord, which is neutral. Jupiter's coolness toward Venus is usually weighed when the two planets join or aspect each other.
- Western Sagittarius is often sidereal Scorpio. Check your sign. Compare the opposite sign, Venus in Gemini.
