In Vedic astrology Venus is read in sidereal Cancer (Karka), a sign fixed to the stars through the Lahiri ayanamsa, which leaves it some 24 degrees behind the Cancer of the Western, tropical zodiac. So a Western "Venus in Cancer" often appears as Venus in Gemini in a kundli, while a Western Leo Venus may fall here instead. Sidereal Venus in Cancer brings the planet of love and pleasure into the Moon's watery, protective sign: affection becomes nurturing, sentimental and closely tied to home.
The planet of pleasure in the sign of the mother
Venus signifies love, marriage, art, beauty, comforts and vehicles. Cancer is water, movable (chara), even and feminine, the 4th sign of the kalapurusha, linked to the heart and chest, the north, and the crab with its shell. Together they describe love as shelter.
What people with this Venus are often like:
- Care as the love language. Cooking, remembering, looking after; affection is shown by attending to needs.
- Attachment to home. A comfortable, beautiful house, family heirlooms, a kitchen that feels generous.
- Emotional sensitivity. Moods and memories colour relationships; hurt is felt deeply and remembered.
- Artistic feeling. Music, poetry and art that move the heart rather than impress the mind.
- The shadow. Clinginess, sulking instead of speaking, or seeking reassurance repeatedly.
Dignity: an enemy's sign, one-sided
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's natural friendship table has Venus regarding the Moon as an enemy, while the Moon holds Venus as only neutral. The enmity is therefore one-sided, and Cancer is an enemy's sign for Venus across its 30 degrees. Classical texts read a planet in an enemy's sign as less at ease, as if living in a house where it does not make the rules.
That is a matter of comfort, not ability. The Moon's condition matters greatly: a strong, waxing, well-placed Moon makes this a warm, caring Venus; an afflicted Moon can turn the same Venus anxious or moody. Many astrologers also add temporary friendship, based on where the Moon and Venus sit from each other, and that can soften the picture considerably.
Venus is never more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so the Sun is in Cancer or within two signs of it; if they are close, Venus may be combust. No Malavya yoga forms from Cancer.
Punarvasu, Pushya and Ashlesha
- Punarvasu, pada 4 only (0°–3°20′, lord Jupiter): a hopeful, forgiving start to the sign.
- Pushya, all four padas (3°20′–16°40′, lord Saturn): the nourishing nakshatra. Saturn is Venus's friend, and this stretch is often read as steady, loyal, protective affection, love expressed through duty and provision.
- Ashlesha, all four padas (16°40′–30°, lord Mercury): the coiled serpent. Mercury is also Venus's friend, but Ashlesha adds intensity, perceptiveness and sometimes guardedness or a wish to hold on tightly.
The aspect on Capricorn
From Cancer, Venus's 7th drishti falls on Capricorn, the sign of its friend Saturn. The Cancer–Capricorn axis links the private hearth with public duty, and this Venus often seeks a steady, responsible partner who can provide structure.
By lagna: which house Cancer becomes
As the natural 4th house, Cancer connects with Venus in the 4th house, where Venus has digbala. Note that directional strength comes from the house, not the sign: Venus in Cancer gains it only when Cancer is actually your 4th house.
- Aries lagna: Cancer is the 4th. Venus, lord of the 2nd and 7th, gains directional strength here; home, vehicles and family comfort stand out.
- Capricorn lagna: the yogakaraka (lord of the 5th and 10th) is in the 7th, a kendra, and aspects the lagna. See Venus in the 7th house.
- Aquarius lagna: the yogakaraka lands in the 6th, a house of effort, service and competition.
- Cancer lagna: Venus, lord of the 4th and 11th, sits in the lagna, giving a gentle, home-loving personality.
- Libra lagna: the lagna lord sits in the 10th, where Venus lacks directional strength but can bring career in hospitality, design or care work.
The navamsa, conjunctions and dasha reshape each line.
Venus's transit through Cancer
Usually Venus crosses Cancer in about 25 days. When its retrograde falls in this sign, it can stay for around four months: the site's 50 sampled passes ranged from just over 24 days to nearly 126. The dates are listed above, and the Venus transit page gives its live position. In gochar, read from your Moon sign, the passage tends to highlight comfort, home and feeling in the house it crosses.
Where readings go wrong
- "Enemy's sign ruins love." It does not. A Venus in Cancer in a kendra, well aspected, can be very happy.
- Assuming digbala from the sign. Only the 4th house gives it.
- Reading the Western sign. A tropical Venus in Cancer is often sidereal Gemini, a friend's sign with a different flavour. See the opposite sign, Venus in Capricorn.
