Sidereal Libra (Tula), the sign a Vedic chart uses, is set against the fixed stars by the Lahiri ayanamsa, which puts it roughly 24 degrees behind Western, tropical Libra. That is why many people with a Western "Venus in Libra" find Venus in Virgo in their kundli, and why a Western Scorpio Venus can fall in sidereal Libra. In the Vedic chart Venus in Libra is at its most dignified short of exaltation: moolatrikona in the first 15 degrees, own sign in the rest, and the placement is read as graceful, fair-minded and oriented to partnership.

The airy face of Shukra

Venus owns two signs. Taurus shows its earthy, sensual side; Libra shows its social, balancing side. Libra is air, movable (chara), odd and masculine, the 7th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the lower abdomen and the west, and symbolised by a man holding scales. The scales are the key: Venus here seeks harmony between people, not only pleasure for oneself.

What tradition connects with this Venus:

  • Diplomacy. Tact, courtesy and a gift for finding the middle ground.
  • Aesthetic balance. Proportion, symmetry, elegant design, fashion, music with structure.
  • Partnership focus. Life feels fuller shared; business partnerships and contracts are often important too.
  • Fairness. A strong sense of justice, sometimes shown in law, mediation or counselling.
  • The shadow. Indecision, dependence on approval, or keeping peace at the cost of honesty.

Dignity: moolatrikona, then own sign

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Libra 0°–15° as Venus's moolatrikona, and the remaining 15°–30° as its own sign (swakshetra). Moolatrikona is the planet's "office": a dignity just below exaltation, where it acts with the clearest purpose. Own sign is its home, strong and comfortable. The difference in practice is modest, and a few later texts give slightly different moolatrikona spans, but the degree does matter for fine judgement.

Venus stays within about 47 degrees of the Sun, so the Sun will be in Libra or within two signs of it. The Sun is debilitated in Libra, and a Venus close to it may be combust, which quietens even a dignified Venus.

Malavya yoga

From Libra, Venus forms Malavya yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas, when Libra is a kendra from the lagna: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn lagnas. The Panch Mahapurush yoga guide explains how its strength is judged.

Chitra, Swati and Vishakha

  • Chitra, padas 3 and 4 (0°–6°40′, lord Mars): moolatrikona degrees with a designer's eye. Striking style, a feel for form and building.
  • Swati, all four padas (6°40′–20°, lord Rahu): the young shoot bending in the wind. Independence, trade and adaptability; Swati straddles the moolatrikona and own-sign halves.
  • Vishakha, padas 1 to 3 (20°–30°, lord Jupiter): the forked branch, goal and choice. Ambition in love and art, and a pull between two paths.

The aspect on Aries

Venus's 7th drishti from Libra falls on Aries, the sign of Mars. The Libra–Aries axis is "we" facing "I", and this Venus is often attracted to direct, energetic people who balance its own tact.

By lagna

Libra is the natural 7th house, so Venus in the 7th house is the obvious parallel. Some texts say a karaka in its own house (Venus is the natural karaka of the 7th) can strain that house's matters, a principle astrologers apply with varying weight.

  • Capricorn lagna: the yogakaraka (lord of the 5th and 10th) sits in the 10th in its own sign with Malavya yoga, often read as success through art, design, luxury or public dealing. See Venus in the 10th house.
  • Cancer lagna: Libra is the 4th house, where Venus has digbala, plus Malavya yoga: home, vehicles and inner contentment are highlighted.
  • Libra lagna: the lagna lord in the lagna with Malavya yoga; Venus also rules the 8th here.
  • Aries lagna: Venus, lord of the 2nd and 7th, sits in the 7th in its own sign with Malavya yoga.
  • Aquarius lagna: the yogakaraka is in the 9th, a trikona, in its own sign.
  • Scorpio lagna: Venus, lord of the 7th and 12th, is in the 12th, a house where tradition says Venus is surprisingly comfortable.

The navamsa, aspects and dasha finish the picture.

Venus's transit through Libra

Usually Venus crosses Libra in about 24 days. When it retrogrades here the stay can run to around four months; the site's 50 sampled passes ranged from just under 24 days to about 122. The dates are listed above, and the Venus transit page shows its live position. In gochar, read from your Moon, a Libra transit is often a few weeks of social ease and negotiation in the house concerned.

Misreadings

  • "Strong Venus means easy relationships." Strength shows capacity, not a guaranteed outcome.
  • Ignoring the degree. Moolatrikona and own sign are close but not identical.
  • Western Libra is often sidereal Virgo. That swaps a strong Venus for a debilitated one. Compare Venus in Aries, across the axis.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between moolatrikona and own sign for Venus in Libra?

Libra from 0 to 15 degrees is Venus's moolatrikona, a dignity just below exaltation, and from 15 to 30 degrees it is simply Venus's own sign. Both are strong; the moolatrikona half is traditionally counted a little stronger and more purposeful.

Which lagnas get Malavya yoga from Venus in Libra?

Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn lagnas, because for them Libra is a kendra (7th, 4th, 1st and 10th house respectively). The yoga's results still depend on combustion, aspects and the dasha.

Is Venus in Libra good for marriage?

It is a strong, dignified Venus with a natural feel for partnership and fairness. But marriage is read from the 7th house, its lord, the navamsa and the dasha, and some texts warn that a karaka in its own natural house needs careful reading.
