Sidereal Taurus (Vrishabha), the sign a Vedic chart uses, is anchored to the fixed stars by the Lahiri ayanamsa and sits roughly 24 degrees behind the tropical Taurus of Western astrology. Many people told they have "Venus in Taurus" by a Western chart will therefore see Venus in Aries in their kundli. In the sidereal chart Venus in Taurus is at home in its own earth sign, and the placement is read as settled, sensual and loyal: a Venus that wants beauty it can touch, taste and keep.
The earthy face of Shukra
Venus owns two signs, and they show two sides of its nature. Taurus is earth, fixed (sthira), even and feminine, the 2nd sign of the kalapurusha, associated with the face, the south and the bull. Here Venus's significations of love, art, comfort and vehicles become concrete and patient.
Traits tradition connects with this Venus:
- Steady affection. Slow to commit and slow to let go; loyalty is expressed by showing up, year after year.
- The senses. Good food, fragrance, fabric, a well-tuned voice. Taurus rules the face and the mouth, so singing and speech are classic associations.
- Building comfort. A liking for a pleasant home, savings and objects of lasting quality.
- Calm under pressure. The bull does not rush, which can read as serenity or as stubbornness.
- The shadow. Possessiveness, resistance to change and occasional overindulgence in food or spending.
Dignity: own sign, and why Libra is the moolatrikona
Taurus is Venus's own sign (swakshetra) from 0° to 30°. Venus needs no friendship table here; it is its own sign lord, so its strength depends mostly on its house, conjunctions and whether it is combust. Venus never moves more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so the Sun is in Taurus or within two signs of it, and a close Sun can make Venus asta.
A frequent mix-up: Venus's moolatrikona is Libra 0°–15°, not Taurus. Taurus is the Moon's exaltation and moolatrikona sign. Some later texts and teachers weigh the two own signs slightly differently, but Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Taurus to Venus as own sign throughout.
Malavya yoga
When Venus is in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) from the lagna, it forms Malavya yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas. From Taurus this happens for four lagnas: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. The yoga is traditionally linked with grace, comfort, vehicles and a cultured life. Its strength still depends on the degree, aspects and dasha; see the Panch Mahapurush yoga guide.
Krittika, Rohini and Mrigashira
- Krittika, padas 2 to 4 (0°–10°, lord Sun): a firm, somewhat proud Venus with high standards in taste and relationships.
- Rohini, all four padas (10°–23°20′, lord Moon): the most fertile, beauty-loving nakshatra of the zodiac. Venus here is warm, artistic and attractive, with the Moon adding feeling, though the Moon is one of Venus's enemies in the friendship table.
- Mrigashira, padas 1 and 2 (23°20′–30°, lord Mars): the searching deer. Curiosity and a restless hunt for the ideal enter an otherwise contented sign.
Aspect on Scorpio
From Taurus, Venus casts its single 7th drishti on Scorpio, the sign of Mars. The axis of Taurus and Scorpio is the axis of what we own and what we share, and a Taurus Venus looking at Scorpio often seeks depth and privacy in partnership.
By lagna: which house it becomes
Taurus is the natural 2nd house, so Venus in the 2nd house covers the family, food, speech and savings themes. For specific lagnas:
- Taurus lagna: the lagna lord in the lagna with Malavya yoga, though Venus also rules the 6th here.
- Aquarius lagna: the yogakaraka (lord of the 4th and 9th) sits in the 4th house in its own sign, with directional strength and Malavya yoga together. Many astrologers count this among the finest positions Venus can hold. See Venus in the 4th house.
- Capricorn lagna: the yogakaraka falls in the 5th, a trikona: creativity, children, romance and intelligence.
- Scorpio lagna: Venus, lord of the 7th and 12th, is in the 7th in its own sign with Malavya yoga, emphasising partnership.
- Leo lagna: Venus, lord of the 3rd and 10th, occupies the 10th with Malavya yoga, often shown in work involving art, design or public dealing.
- Libra lagna: the lagna lord moves to the 8th house, a private, research-minded placement.
The navamsa, aspects and dasha modify every line.
Venus's transit through Taurus
On an ordinary pass Venus stays in Taurus for about 25 days. When Venus turns retrograde in this sign, the stay can stretch to around four months; the site's 50 sampled passes ranged from a little over 24 days to nearly 126. The dates are listed above, and the Venus transit page shows its live position. In gochar the passage is read from your Moon sign, usually as a few weeks when comforts, pleasures and money matters in the relevant house come forward.
Points of difference and misreading
- Own sign is not a guarantee of ease. A combust or heavily aspected Venus in Taurus can still struggle.
- Taurus lagna natives rule the 6th too. For them Venus brings both the self and service or disputes into view.
- Western "Venus in Taurus" is often sidereal Aries. Check before reading. See Venus in Scorpio for the opposite sign.
