In the sidereal zodiac, which Vedic astrology fixes to the stars with the Lahiri ayanamsa, Taurus begins about 24 degrees later than the tropical Taurus of Western charts, so many people whose Western chart says "Rahu in Taurus" will find Rahu in Aries in their kundli. In sidereal Taurus, Rahu sits in the sign many texts name as its exaltation: the node's hunger turns towards things that can be held and kept, and it is usually read as a steadier, more productive Rahu than most.
What Rahu does in Vrishabha
Rahu, the north node, magnifies desire and pulls towards the new, the foreign and the large-scale. Taurus is earth, fixed (sthira), even and feminine, the 2nd sign of the kalapurusha, tied to the face, the south and the bull. The blend is an appetite for the concrete: money, land, food, voice, beauty, possessions.
What tradition commonly describes:
- Wealth drive. A strong wish to accumulate and to secure comfort, often through unusual or foreign sources of income.
- Patience in pursuit. A fixed sign slows Rahu down. The hunger is steady rather than frantic.
- Taste and senses. Luxury goods, food, fashion, music and design attract this Rahu.
- Voice and speech. Taurus rules the mouth and face; persuasive speech or an unusual voice is a classic association.
- Shadow side. Attachment, stubbornness and the feeling that there is never quite enough.
Exaltation: a real disagreement
This is the sign where the dispute over Rahu's dignity matters most, so it is worth stating plainly.
- Many texts and teachers give Rahu's exaltation in Taurus, with the matching debilitation in Scorpio.
- Others place the exaltation in Gemini and the debilitation in Sagittarius. See Rahu in Gemini for that view.
- Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Rahu no sign of its own, and the node's exaltation is not treated with the certainty that the seven visible planets' exaltations are.
So "exalted Rahu in Taurus" is a widely used convention, not a fact every school accepts. A good reading says which convention it follows and then leans on something less disputed: the sign lord.
Taurus belongs to Venus. Venus is commonly counted among the planets friendly to Rahu, along with Mercury and Saturn, though no single friendship table for the nodes is agreed. Practical points:
- A strong, well-placed Venus gives Rahu a comfortable base; the desire for wealth and beauty tends to find legitimate channels.
- A weak or afflicted Venus leaves Rahu's attachment without a good guide.
- Venus's own houses for your lagna are the matters Rahu borrows here.
Because there is no Mahapurusha yoga for the nodes, "exaltation" here is only ever a matter of tone, not of a named yoga.
Krittika, Rohini and Mrigashira
- Krittika, padas 2 to 4 (0°–10°, lord Sun): a sharper, more demanding Rahu, with the Sun's pride in the background.
- Rohini, all four padas (10°–23°20′, lord Moon): the most sensuous nakshatra. Rahu here is read as strong attraction to beauty, comfort and growth; the Moon's link adds emotional hunger.
- Mrigashira, padas 1 and 2 (23°20′–30°, lord Mars): the searching deer. Curiosity and restlessness enter an otherwise settled sign.
Which house it becomes
Taurus is the natural 2nd sign, so Rahu in the 2nd house shows the core themes: family, savings, food and speech. For other lagnas:
- Capricorn lagna: Taurus is the 5th, a trikona; unusual creativity, speculation or children's matters.
- Aquarius lagna: the 4th, with Venus as the yogakaraka dispositor; property and home are the focus. See Rahu in the 4th house.
- Virgo lagna: the 9th, beliefs and teachers from outside one's tradition.
- Pisces lagna: the 3rd, an upachaya house, where Rahu is widely held to do well through effort and communication.
Ketu in Scorpio and the aspect question
Rahu's partner Ketu always sits opposite, here in Scorpio. The axis runs from the visible (what I own) to the hidden (what is shared, inherited or kept secret). Many astrologers read it as a pull between security and transformation. Rahu's 7th aspect also lands on Scorpio; the 5th and 9th aspects some traditions add would reach Virgo and Capricorn, but others do not use them.
Rahu's passage through Taurus
Rahu spends about 18 months in Taurus. Moving backwards, it enters at the Mrigashira end from Gemini and leaves at Krittika into Aries. The dates are listed above, and the Rahu transit page shows where it stands today.
In gochar from your Moon sign, a Rahu transit in Taurus is traditionally read as a period when money, possessions and values in the matching house come under a bright, sometimes distorting light. Some people see gains, others a restless wish for more. The birth chart and the running Rahu mahadasha or other dasha decide what actually happens.
Points to keep in proportion
- Exalted is not the same as guaranteed. Even for those who use Taurus as exaltation, Rahu still acts through Venus and its companions.
- Western and sidereal signs differ. Check that you are reading the sidereal position.
- Kaal Sarp talk. A node in any sign can be part of that pattern; our calm explainer puts it in context.
