This page uses the sidereal zodiac of Vedic astrology, fixed to the stars by the Lahiri ayanamsa and now running about 24 degrees behind the tropical signs, so a Western chart that says "Rahu in Aries" often shows Rahu in Pisces in a kundli. In sidereal Aries, Rahu's appetite meets the first and most headstrong sign of the zodiac: the result is a restless urge to begin, to lead and to test oneself against something new.
What Rahu brings to Mesha
Rahu has no body. It is the Moon's north node, a point that magnifies whatever it touches, and it signifies obsession, the foreign and unfamiliar, sudden change and technology. Aries is fire, movable (chara), odd and masculine, the 1st sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the head, the east and the ram. Put an amplifier in a sign that already charges forward and the theme becomes initiative taken to its limit.
Traits traditionally connected with this placement:
- A starter's hunger. New projects, new places, new fields; the thrill is often in the beginning.
- Courage with a gamble in it. Willing to take risks others avoid, sometimes before the ground has been checked.
- Independence. A dislike of waiting for permission and a wish to be known for one's own effort.
- Competitive edge. Sport, technology, start-ups and any arena where speed wins suit the pattern.
- The shadow side. Impatience, a quick temper and a tendency to leave things half-done once the novelty fades.
None of this is fixed. Rahu gives the colour of its sign, but the house, the lagna and the planets around it decide how loudly that colour shows.
Dignity and the sign lord Mars
Aries is not on the list of disputed signs for the nodes, so Rahu's dignity here is simply not fixed. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Rahu no sign of its own, and the texts that do assign it an exaltation choose Taurus or Gemini, not Aries. Rather than a label, the working rule is this: Rahu gives the results of its sign lord (its dispositor) and of the planets that join or aspect it.
Here the dispositor is Mars. No single friendship table for Rahu is agreed; many astrologers treat Mars as neither a clear friend nor a clear enemy of the node. So the practical questions are:
- Where is Mars, and is it strong? Mars in its own sign, exalted or well placed gives Rahu's fire a disciplined outlet.
- Which houses does Mars rule for your lagna? Rahu will carry some of those houses' matters.
- Does Mars join or aspect Rahu? A Mars-Rahu link is read as intense energy that needs a clear goal.
Ashwini, Bharani and a Krittika sliver
Aries holds three nakshatras, and Rahu's degree places it in one of them:
- Ashwini (0°–13°20′, lord Ketu): speed, healing and quick starts. Rahu in a Ketu-ruled nakshatra is a curious meeting of the two nodes; tradition reads it as sudden ideas and bursts of action.
- Bharani (13°20′–26°40′, lord Venus): restraint, appetite and endurance. Here Rahu's desires lean towards pleasure, creativity or things carried to their extreme.
- Krittika, pada 1 only (26°40′–30°, lord Sun): a sharp, cutting quality. The Sun is the light Rahu eclipses in myth, so this last sliver is often read as a pull between ambition and self-doubt.
The house depends on your lagna
Aries is the natural 1st sign, so Rahu in the 1st house shows the pure form of this pattern: an identity built on reinvention. For other lagnas the same Rahu falls elsewhere:
- Libra lagna: Aries is the 7th house, so read Rahu in the 7th house: partners or business contacts from unfamiliar backgrounds.
- Capricorn lagna: the 4th house, restlessness around home and roots.
- Leo lagna: the 9th house, unusual beliefs or teachers, and long journeys.
A Rahu in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th, the upachaya houses, is widely held to use its drive well; for Aries that means Aquarius, Scorpio, Cancer and Gemini lagnas.
The axis with Ketu in Libra
Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite. With Rahu in Aries, Ketu sits in Libra, the sign of balance and partnership. The chart then reads as an axis: hunger for self-assertion on one side, a familiar but half-disowned skill with diplomacy on the other. Many astrologers say the lesson of this axis is learning that independence and cooperation are not rivals.
Rahu's 7th drishti also falls on Libra. Some traditions add 5th and 9th aspects for the nodes, which from Aries would reach Leo and Sagittarius; others reject them, so a careful reading says which rule it uses.
Rahu's transit through Aries
Rahu usually stays in Aries for about 18 months; across the passes the site's code sampled the median is just under 550 days. Because the nodes move backwards, Rahu enters Aries at its last degree from Taurus and leaves at 0° into Pisces, so it crosses Krittika's sliver first, then Bharani, then Ashwini. The dates are listed above, and the Rahu transit page tracks its live position.
In gochar, read from your Moon sign, the passage is traditionally linked with a push for change in the matching house: new ventures, bold decisions, sometimes haste. The 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon are counted as favourable houses for a Rahu transit. A transit only works within the birth chart and the running dasha.
Where readings go wrong
- Treating a Western "Rahu in Aries" as the same thing. Most of the time that is sidereal Pisces.
- Reading Rahu alone. Without Mars and without the house, the sign says very little.
- Assigning a fixed dignity. Aries has none for Rahu in the classical texts; any "strong" or "weak" label is an interpretation.
- Fearing a node placement. A node is a direction of hunger, not a sentence. The same hunger is enterprise in one chart and restlessness in another. If you have met the term Kaal Sarp, our calm guide explains what it does and does not mean.
In the 18-year Rahu mahadasha these Aries themes come to the front most clearly.
See where your Rahu is
A free kundli shows Rahu's sign, house, nakshatra and degree, where Mars sits, and which sign holds Ketu, so you can read the whole axis rather than half of it. Compare with Rahu in Taurus, the sign it comes from.
