Vedic charts use the sidereal Gemini, measured from the fixed stars with the Lahiri ayanamsa and roughly 24 degrees behind the Western, tropical sign; a Western "Rahu in Gemini" is therefore frequently Rahu in Taurus in the kundli. Sidereal Gemini gives Rahu the sign of the twins and of Mercury, where the node's appetite becomes mental: a hunger to know, connect, trade and talk, and some schools consider this Rahu's exaltation.
Rahu's appetite in the sign of the twins
Rahu signifies obsession, novelty, the foreign and technology. Gemini is air, dual (dvisvabhava), odd and masculine, the 3rd sign of the kalapurusha, ruling the arms and shoulders, the west, and shown as a man and woman together. Air plus Rahu is information that never sits still.
Common traditional descriptions:
- Curiosity without an off-switch. Reading, research, languages and gathering facts from everywhere.
- Networks and trade. Brokering, sales, commerce, media and contacts across borders.
- Technical fluency. Software, communication tools and new media fit easily.
- Clever speech. Wit, persuasion and adaptability; sometimes a talent for telling people what they want to hear.
- Shadow side. Scattered focus, nervous restlessness and difficulty committing to one path.
Dignity: which sign is Rahu's exaltation?
The nodes are where classical authorities disagree most, and Gemini sits in the middle of the argument.
- Some texts place Rahu's exaltation here, with Sagittarius as the debilitation.
- Many others give Taurus as the exaltation and Scorpio as the debilitation; see Rahu in Taurus.
- Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Rahu no sign of its own.
Whichever convention you use, most astrologers agree Gemini is comfortable ground for Rahu, because its lord Mercury is commonly treated as friendly to the node. That makes Mercury the most important factor on this page:
- Where does Mercury sit, and is it strong, combust or joined by malefics?
- Which houses does Mercury rule for your lagna? Rahu borrows their matters.
- Is Mercury itself linked to Rahu? A Mercury-Rahu tie is read as a sharp, inventive but restless intellect.
There are no Mahapurusha yogas for the nodes, so the exaltation question affects the tone of the reading rather than producing a named yoga.
Mrigashira, Ardra and Punarvasu
- Mrigashira, padas 3 and 4 (0°–6°40′, lord Mars): the seeker. Rahu here hunts for the next idea.
- Ardra, all four padas (6°40′–20°, lord Rahu): Rahu in its own nakshatra. Ardra is the storm that clears the air; tradition links it with upheaval, research, sharp intellect and strong feeling. Many astrologers treat Rahu here as highly pronounced, for better or worse.
- Punarvasu, padas 1 to 3 (20°–30°, lord Jupiter): return and renewal. Jupiter's influence gives Rahu's curiosity more direction and ethics.
The house by lagna
Gemini is the natural 3rd sign, so Rahu in the 3rd house is the textbook version: courage, communication and self-effort, and the 3rd is an upachaya house where Rahu is widely held to thrive. With other lagnas:
- Leo lagna: the 11th house, gains through networks and large organisations, another favourable house for Rahu.
- Virgo lagna: the 10th house, a career in communication, trade or technology, with Mercury as both dispositor and lagna lord. See Rahu in the 10th house.
- Libra lagna: the 9th, unconventional beliefs, foreign study or teachers.
- Aquarius lagna: the 5th, unusual ideas, speculation and creative intelligence.
Ketu in Sagittarius
Ketu always occupies the opposite sign, here Sagittarius, the sign of dharma and higher learning. The axis runs from information (Gemini) to wisdom (Sagittarius). A common reading is that the person hungers for facts and connections while carrying an older, half-forgotten feel for philosophy. Rahu's 7th aspect falls on Sagittarius too; the 5th and 9th aspects that some traditions allow would reach Libra and Aquarius, but many astrologers do not use them.
The transit through Gemini
Rahu spends about 18 months in Gemini. Because it travels in reverse, it enters at the Punarvasu end from Cancer and passes through Ardra before leaving through Mrigashira into Taurus. The dates are listed above, and the Rahu transit page follows it live.
Read in gochar from the Moon sign, this passage is traditionally linked with a flood of news, contacts and new ideas in the matching house, and sometimes with overload. For some Moon signs Gemini is the 3rd, 6th or 11th, the houses where a Rahu transit is counted as favourable.
Common mistakes
- Taking the exaltation as settled. It is one school's view; say so.
- Ignoring Mercury. Rahu in Gemini with a weak Mercury reads very differently from Rahu with a strong one.
- Reading one placement as a verdict. The Rahu mahadasha, the navamsa and conjunctions all change the result.
