Ardra is the sixth nakshatra, spanning 6°40′ to 20° of sidereal Gemini, and it is ruled by Rahu. Its deity is Rudra, the storm form of Shiva, and its symbol is a teardrop (some texts say a gem), so Ardra is the nakshatra of storms, tears and the cleansing that comes after them.
The word ārdrā means "moist". In the sky it is marked by the bright reddish star at Orion's shoulder, which we call Betelgeuse. Tradition links the Sun's entry into Ardra with the coming of the monsoon rains, and in South India the Moon's passage through Ardra in the month of Margazhi is celebrated as Ardra Darshan, Shiva's cosmic dance.
Rahu in Mercury's sign
All of Ardra lies in Gemini, the airy, dual sign of Mercury. Its nakshatra lord is Rahu. Mercury is intellect, speech and information; Rahu is hunger for the new, the foreign and the unexplored. Together they make a mind that questions everything, takes in information fast and is drawn to technology, research and unusual ideas.
Rahu's three nakshatras are Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha, one in each air sign: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. All three share an independent, unconventional streak. Ardra's version is the most emotionally stormy.

Rudra is the howling one, the god of storms, wildness and healing too. A Brahmana story says that when Prajapati's newborn son cried, he was named Rudra, from the root rud, "to weep". The storm god is also called the supreme physician in the Vedas. What he destroys he also heals.
This gives Ardra its double nature. The storm clears the air; the tear releases grief. Ardra natives often go through phases of upheaval and emerge renewed, and they tend to understand pain, their own and other people's, better than most. A teardrop holds emotion that has finally broken through. Some texts give a gem instead, suggesting clarity formed under pressure. Both readings apply. Ardra can be raw and expressive, and it can also be brilliant and precise.

Ardra is Manushya gana, human and worldly. Its yoni is the dog (female), partnered with Mula (male dog). Its nadi is Adi (vata), as is Punarvasu next door.
