Under tara: the bride's nakshatra counted from the groom's / the groom's from the bride's; the 3rd, 5th and 7th taras are the unfavourable ones. Gana and the sign kootas can differ with who is the groom, so where they differ both are given (first: Ardra as the groom). Where the full score is a range, a pada of one nakshatra falls in another sign; the "usually" score covers most of the two nakshatras.

Nadi: the nakshatras that share Ardra's nadi

Ardra belongs to the Adi (vata) nadi. A match with any nakshatra of the same nadi scores 0 of 8 in the nadi koota — what is called nadi dosha. The texts also list exceptions, and astrologers differ on how far an exception eases it. Each pair below shows the exceptions that can apply for some placement of the two Moons; which one applies to two real charts is what kundli matching shows.

  • Ashwini — the two never share a Moon sign, so none of the three exceptions can apply
  • Ardra — possible exceptions: same nakshatra, different padas
  • Punarvasu — possible exceptions: same Moon sign, different nakshatras
  • Uttara Phalguni — the two never share a Moon sign, so none of the three exceptions can apply
  • Hasta — the two never share a Moon sign, so none of the three exceptions can apply
  • Jyeshtha — the two never share a Moon sign, so none of the three exceptions can apply
  • Mula — the two never share a Moon sign, so none of the three exceptions can apply
  • Shatabhisha — the two never share a Moon sign, so none of the three exceptions can apply
  • Purva Bhadrapada — the two never share a Moon sign, so none of the three exceptions can apply

More: nadi dosha, its meaning and exceptions.

Ardra's place in gun milan is set by a manushya gana, a dog yoni, the Adi nadi and Gemini as the Moon sign throughout. Its row in the table is one of the most uneven: as the groom, Ardra scores from as low as 3 up to 33 across the 27 nakshatras, and as the bride from 4 to 34.

Those totals are generated by the same engine as our kundli matching report. The sections below explain the extremes and the middle.

Ardra's matching profile

Ardra, the teardrop, is ruled by Rahu and presided over by Rudra. It lies entirely in Gemini, a sign ruled by Mercury. For the eight kootas:

  • Gana: manushya. Good with deva and manushya partners, 0 with rakshasa.
  • Yoni: dog (female). The deer is its sworn enemy, carried by Anuradha and Jyeshtha. Mula is the other dog.
  • Nadi: Adi.
  • Moon sign: Gemini, all four padas. Varna, vashya, graha maitri and bhakoot are read from Gemini every time.

The high and the low of Ardra's row

Ardra as the groom has 9 pairings below 18, 9 in the average band, 8 in the good band and 1 above 32. As the bride it is 6 low, 11 average, 9 good and 1 excellent, so the bride row sits somewhat higher.

Mrigashira, the nakshatra just before Ardra, is the top pairing: 33 with an Ardra groom and 34 with an Ardra bride. Its range (down to the mid 20s) depends on whether the Mrigashira Moon is in Gemini with Ardra or back in Taurus. Purva Phalguni follows at 27.5 and 28.5, then Ardra with itself at 28, and Bharani and Chitra in the mid 20s.

The lowest cell in Ardra's row, and one of the lowest anywhere in the chart, is Jyeshtha: 3 with Ardra as the groom. Almost everything disagrees here. Dog and deer are sworn-enemy yonis, manushya and rakshasa give 0 on gana, both belong to the Adi nadi, and Gemini and Scorpio stand in a 6/8 relation that zeroes bhakoot. Shatabhisha (12) and Ashlesha (13) come next, both rakshasa, and Shatabhisha also shares Ardra's nadi.

A low number like 3 looks alarming, but it describes how eight rules line up, not what two people are like. Many families read it as a reason to consult the full charts carefully rather than as a final word.

Gana and yoni in detail

Because Ardra is manushya, gana scores 0 of 6 with each of the nine rakshasa nakshatras: Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha, whichever partner is the groom. Even so, Chitra shows that a rakshasa partner can still reach the mid 20s with Ardra when most of the other kootas agree.

On yoni, Anuradha and Jyeshtha score 0 of 4. Mula shares the dog yoni and scores 4, though that pair is pulled down elsewhere.

Tara counted from Ardra is unfavourable for Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada (vipat), Ashwini, Magha and Mula (pratyari), and Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha (vadha). Each direction is worth 1.5.

Nadi: Ardra's Adi partners

Ardra shares the Adi nadi with Ashwini, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada. All of these score 0 of 8 on nadi with Ardra. Two carry a recognised exception:

  • Punarvasu, when its Moon is in Gemini: the same sign in different nakshatras.
  • Ardra with Ardra, when the padas differ.

For Ashwini and the rest, no standard exception can apply. Our tool shows the exception where it exists but does not add points back, since astrologers differ on whether it removes the dosha or only lightens it. Some regional traditions handle nadi differently again. See the nadi dosha guide.

Beyond Ardra's numbers

A gun milan total, high or low, is a first look. A full reading examines manglik status, the seventh house and its lord, the navamsa and the dashas each person will run, and South Indian porutham matching may give the same pair a different verdict. Talking openly settles far more than any koota. Compare Ardra's row with Punarvasu, or see the full nakshatra compatibility chart.

The nakshatras narrow the score down; both sets of birth details give the exact pada and sign, the nadi and bhakoot exceptions, and manglik.

Frequently asked questions

Which nakshatra is best for Ardra?

Mrigashira gives Ardra its highest usual score: 33 with Ardra as the groom and 34 with Ardra as the bride. Purva Phalguni and Ardra itself follow at around 28. These numbers are one traditional screen; a full chart reading and the two people's own understanding count for more.

Is Ardra with Punarvasu nadi dosha?

Both are Adi nadi, so the nadi koota scores 0 of 8. When the Punarvasu Moon is in Gemini (its first three padas), both Moons share Gemini in different nakshatras, and the 'same Moon sign, different nakshatras' exception can apply. Astrologers differ on how much it eases the finding.

Can Ardra marry Ardra?

The Ardra–Ardra pair totals 28 of 36. Nadi is 0 because the nakshatra is shared, and every other koota is full. When the two Moons are in different padas, the 'same nakshatra, different padas' exception can apply.
