Uttara Ashadha is one of the nine nakshatras that sits across two signs, so an Uttara Ashadha-born person's matching depends first on where exactly the Moon falls: its first pada is in Sagittarius and the other three in Capricorn. Across the 27, its cells in the table above run from 3 to 35 as the groom and 4 to 35 as the bride, but its usual scores top out at 28.5 and 29.5.
The gap between those ceilings is the story of this row. Here is how our kundli matching engine arrives at it.
The nakshatra's four kootas
Uttara Ashadha is ruled by the Sun, with the Vishvedevas as its deities. What it fixes for matching:
- Gana (6): manushya.
- Yoni (4): mongoose, male. No other nakshatra carries the mongoose, so Uttara Ashadha never has a same-animal partner. Its sworn enemy is the serpent of Rohini and Mrigashira.
- Nadi (8): Antya.
- Tara (3): its place in the count.
One pada in Sagittarius, three in Capricorn
The other four kootas (varna, vashya, graha maitri and bhakoot) are read from the Moon sign. For the first pada that is Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter; for padas 2 to 4 it is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn. The sign lord changes, and so does the relationship with every partner's sign, so a single cell can hold two quite different totals.
Since three of the four padas are in Capricorn, the "usual" score in the table is the Capricorn reading. If your Moon is in the first pada, look at the other end of each range. Take Uttara Bhadrapada, which lies wholly in Pisces: its usual score with an Uttara Ashadha groom is 28.5, but the cell runs to 30.5, and that upper end belongs to the Sagittarius pada. Bharani goes the other way, 28.5 usual and 27 at the low end.
Partners that straddle signs themselves add a second source of movement, which is why some ranges are wide.
Where the row lands
With Uttara Ashadha as the groom, 6 usual scores are below 18, 10 sit in 18–24.5 and 11 in 25–32; none pass 32. As the bride the count is 7, 9 and 11. The leaders are Bharani and Uttara Bhadrapada (28.5 as groom, 29.5 as bride), then Uttara Ashadha with itself at 28, Ashwini at 26 and 28, and Pushya at 26 and 28.
The weakest usual result is striking: Magha gives an Uttara Ashadha groom just 3. Magha is rakshasa, which zeroes gana against a manushya nakshatra; it shares the Antya nadi; and Leo sits sixth and eighth from Capricorn, a relation that zeroes bhakoot. Three heavy kootas vanish together. Ashlesha (12) and Krittika (14) follow, both rakshasa and both Antya.
Groom and bride rows differ because gana is not symmetric for a manushya nakshatra: a deva bride gives an Uttara Ashadha groom 5, while a deva groom gives an Uttara Ashadha bride 6. Varna, taken from the groom's side, adds more.
Mongoose, serpent and the fierce gana
Mongoose and serpent are sworn enemies, so Rohini and Mrigashira give 0 of 4 on yoni. On gana, manushya with rakshasa is 0 from both sides; the rakshasa nakshatras are Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha.
Tara from Uttara Ashadha is vipat for Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta, pratyari for Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada, and vadha for Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati. Mrigashira therefore loses on yoni and tara at once. Some traditions count tara from the bride only; ours counts both ways at 1.5 each.
The Antya nadi group
Uttara Ashadha shares the Antya nadi with Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Shravana and Revati. Nadi scores 0 with each. For all but one, no exception can apply. The exception is Shravana: it lies entirely in Capricorn, so an Uttara Ashadha Moon in padas 2 to 4 shares its sign, and the "same Moon sign, different nakshatras" exception can apply.
Uttara Ashadha with Uttara Ashadha usually scores 28. When one Moon is in the Sagittarius pada and the other in Capricorn, the two signs are adjacent, bhakoot falls away and the pair can drop to 18; at the same time the "same nakshatra, different Moon signs" exception can apply to nadi, as can "different padas". Astrologers differ on how much these exceptions ease a shared nadi; our nadi dosha guide explains the debate.
A wider view
The ashtakoot total is a starting screen. A full matching adds manglik status, the seventh house, the navamsa and each person's dasha, and South Indian porutham methods reach their own conclusions from the same nakshatras.
