An Ashlesha Moon enters gun milan with a rakshasa gana, a cat yoni, the Antya nadi and Cancer as its sign. Across the 27 nakshatras it scores 9.5 to 29.5 as the groom and 8.5 to 29.5 as the bride, and a large share of its pairings fall in the low band, which is mostly the gana koota at work rather than anything unusual about Ashlesha itself.
The table above lists every pairing, computed by the engine behind our kundli matching. This page explains the pattern, calmly.
Ashlesha's matching features
Ashlesha, the coiled serpent, is ruled by Mercury and presided over by the Nagas. It lies entirely in Cancer, whose lord is the Moon. For matching:
- Gana: rakshasa. Full marks with rakshasa partners, 1 with deva, 0 with manushya.
- Yoni: cat (male). The rat is its enemy, the yoni of Magha and Purva Phalguni. Punarvasu is the female cat.
- Nadi: Antya.
- Moon sign: Cancer, all four padas.
Why Ashlesha's row sits lower
As the groom, Ashlesha has 11 pairings below 18, 10 in the average band and 6 in the good band. As the bride, it is 12 low, 9 average and 6 good. There is no pairing above 32.
The main reason is structural. Nine of the 27 nakshatras are manushya, and with each of them a rakshasa nakshatra scores 0 of 6 on gana. Nine are deva, which give only 1. So for two thirds of possible partners Ashlesha starts with little or nothing on the second-heaviest nakshatra koota. The same is true of every rakshasa nakshatra, and it is a feature of the scoring table, not a judgement on the people born under it.
The strongest pairings
Pushya is first, at 29 in both directions. Pushya is the nakshatra just before Ashlesha and also sits in Cancer, so the sign-based kootas are full; their nadis differ (Madhya and Antya), and that outweighs the deva–rakshasa gana. Ashlesha with itself follows at 28. Ashwini reaches 27 with an Ashlesha groom and 26 with an Ashlesha bride. Dhanishta, a fellow rakshasa, is usually 27 (groom) or 26 (bride), though its range drops into the high teens because Dhanishta straddles Capricorn and Aquarius. Chitra and Jyeshtha, both rakshasa, also reach 26.
The weakest pairings
With Ashlesha as the groom, Rohini (12), Purva Bhadrapada (12.5) and Uttara Ashadha (13) are lowest. All three are manushya, so gana is 0. Rohini and Uttara Ashadha also share the Antya nadi, and Rohini falls on a pratyari tara counted from Ashlesha.
On yoni, cat and rat are sworn enemies, so Magha and Purva Phalguni score 0 of 4 with Ashlesha; Punarvasu, the other cat, gives 4.
Tara counted from Ashlesha is unfavourable for Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha (vipat), Rohini, Hasta and Shravana (pratyari), and Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha (vadha). Some schools count it only from the bride.
Nadi: the Antya group
Ashlesha's Antya nadi partners are Krittika, Rohini, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Revati. With each, nadi scores 0 of 8, and no standard exception can apply, since none shares Ashlesha's nakshatra or its Cancer Moon. Ashlesha with Ashlesha can use the "same nakshatra, different padas" exception.
Texts describe a shared nadi as a caution, and they list exceptions; astrologers differ on how much those exceptions help. Our tool shows them without altering the score. The nadi dosha guide walks through it.
Beyond the gun milan total
For Ashlesha especially, the total alone can mislead, since one koota does so much of the work. A full reading checks manglik status, the seventh house, the navamsa and the dashas, and South Indian porutham systems, which weigh gana and other checks on their own terms, may view the same pair quite differently. Two people who understand each other are not bound by a table. Compare with Pushya, or return to the nakshatra compatibility chart.
