Mercury, called Budha or Saumya, is the graha of intellect and speech in Vedic astrology: it signifies learning, communication, writing, trade, friends and maternal uncles. It owns Gemini and Virgo, is exalted in Virgo at 15 degrees and debilitated in Pisces at 15 degrees, and its Vimshottari mahadasha lasts seventeen years.
In the planetary court Mercury is the prince (kumara): young, quick, curious and adaptable. The name Budha comes from the same root as buddhi, intelligence, and the connection is the key to the whole planet. Mercury is the part of us that notices, names, compares, counts and explains.
What Mercury signifies
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra calls Mercury the speech (vak) of Kalapurusha. Its significations spread out from there.
- The thinking mind: reasoning, analysis, memory for detail, wit, the ability to learn a subject quickly and see how its parts connect. Where the Moon feels, Mercury interprets.
- Speech and writing: languages, teaching, publishing, accounts, scripts of every kind, and the skill of saying a thing clearly.
- Trade and exchange: business, commerce, negotiation, brokerage, and anything that depends on moving information or goods between people. Mercury is among the karakas of the tenth house for this reason.
- Friends, peers and maternal uncles: relationships of equals rather than of authority.
- Play and youth: games, humour, and the lasting youthfulness Mercury is said to lend.
In the Kalapurusha mapping Mercury is associated with the skin and with speech, a symbolic mapping rather than a health statement. Its colour is green like durva grass, its element earth, its day Wednesday. It is neuter and rajasic, and BPHS names Vishnu as its deity.
A benefic that changes with company
Mercury is a natural benefic, but a pliable one. Classical texts say it takes on the nature of the planets it is joined with: beside Jupiter or Venus it acts as a benefic, beside Saturn, Mars or the nodes it leans toward their results. Alone, it is benefic. In practice this means you rarely read Mercury by itself; you read it with its companions.
Mercury and the Sun
Mercury never strays far from the Sun, at most about 28 degrees. So it is always in the Sun's sign or one of the two neighbouring signs, and it is often close enough to be combust (asta). Because this is so common, many astrologers treat Mercury's combustion lightly, and the Sun–Mercury conjunction has its own name, Budha-Aditya yoga, linked with intelligence put to use in the world. Very deep combustion is still weighed with care.
Mercury also turns retrograde (vakri) about three times a year. A retrograde Mercury in a birth chart often describes a mind that reviews, revises and returns to things, rather than something going wrong.

Mercury is unusual: the same sign, Virgo, holds its exaltation, moolatrikona and own-sign degrees in sequence. Virgo's precision, order and service suit an analytical mind perfectly. In Gemini Mercury is lively, curious and social.
In Pisces, Jupiter's vast water sign, Mercury's habit of dividing and defining meets something that resists definition. A debilitated Mercury often gives a mind that works by intuition, imagery and feeling rather than step-by-step logic, which can suit art, music and spiritual study very well. Cancellation rules, and the fact that Jupiter rules Pisces, often soften the result.
When Mercury is in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra from the lagna, the chart has Bhadra yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, traditionally linked with learning and eloquence.
Friends and enemies
Mercury's natural friends are the Sun and Venus. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are neutral to it. The Moon is its enemy, even though the Moon counts Mercury as a friend. The Puranic story explains the imbalance: Mercury was born to the Moon and Tara, the wife of Brihaspati (Jupiter), and the story of that birth left Mercury cool toward its father. Jupiter, in the same table, counts Mercury as an enemy while Mercury stays neutral to Jupiter. Whatever one makes of the myth, the table is what the texts use.
Aspect and directional strength
Mercury casts only the full seventh aspect (drishti). It gains digbala in the first house, the ascendant, where intelligence meets the world directly: in the lagna, Mercury tends to give an alert, articulate, adaptable manner.
The Mercury mahadasha
Mercury's period lasts seventeen years and closes the Vimshottari cycle, after Saturn and before Ketu. Its three nakshatras are Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati; each ends a water sign, just before a fire sign begins, the junction called gandanta. People born with the Moon in these nakshatras start life in Mercury dasha.
A Mercury period usually puts study, communication and business at the front. Courses, exams, writing projects, trade, contracts, networking, and new friendships are typical themes. With a strong Mercury these years can bring skill, qualifications and commercial success; with a strained Mercury, a scattered mind or too many parallel plans may ask for focus. Its lordship from the lagna matters a great deal: for Gemini and Virgo ascendants Mercury rules the lagna itself, while for others it may rule houses of gain or of effort.
Mercury in transit
Mercury spends about three to four weeks in a sign, longer when retrograde, and because it travels with the Sun it completes the zodiac in about a year. Classical gochar rules count its transit through the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 11th houses from the natal Moon as favourable, more houses than for any other planet, which fits its benefic nature.
