Mercury in the 7th house places the planet of speech, reasoning and trade in the house of marriage, partners and contracts. Tradition reads it as a relationship built on talk and shared interests, a partner who feels like a friend, and a gift for agreements and negotiation.
The reading below follows the Parashari method. Houses are counted whole-sign from the lagna, so the sign seventh from your rising sign is your 7th house; many astrologers then repeat the exercise from the Moon sign for a second view.
What Mercury brings to the house of the other person
The 7th house is where the chart meets someone else on equal terms: a spouse, a business partner, a client, the public across a counter. Mercury is the prince of the planetary court, the graha of words, comparison, commerce and friendship between peers. The two fit together more naturally than one might expect.
- A conversational bond. Mercury wants to be understood and to understand. In the 7th it tends to make communication the centre of a marriage: long talks, shared jokes, shared reading, and trouble mainly when conversation stops.
- The partner's nature. Traditional descriptions give a spouse who is clever, youthful in looks or manner, articulate and often skilled with numbers, writing or trade. Sometimes the partner is close in age or someone first met as a friend, colleague or classmate.
- Contracts and dealing. Mercury is the karaka of trade, and the 7th is the house of agreements. People with this placement often have a knack for negotiation, brokerage, consulting and any work that sits between two parties.
- Changeability. Mercury is dual and restless. An unsettled Mercury here can show as indecision about commitment or a tendency to keep options open, especially when it joins malefics.
The 7th is a kendra, so a benefic here is classically welcome and acts visibly in life. It is also a maraka house, a technical term from longevity work that says nothing about the marriage itself. Mercury is not the karaka of the 7th (Venus is), so no karaka rule applies.
One real weakness: Mercury's digbala is in the 1st house, and the 7th is the exact opposite, so Mercury has zero directional strength here. It is one component of strength, not a verdict. In practice it often means the person thinks best in dialogue, sharpening their own ideas against someone else's, rather than alone.
How the sign changes it
The sign in the 7th is set by your lagna, and it decides Mercury's dignity:
- Sagittarius lagna: the 7th is Gemini, Mercury's own sign. Mercury here also rules the 7th and 10th, and being in its own sign in a kendra it forms Bhadra yoga, one of the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas.
- Pisces lagna: the 7th is Virgo, where Mercury is exalted, in its own sign and in moolatrikona from 15 to 20 degrees. Bhadra yoga forms again, and Mercury rules the 4th and 7th.
- Virgo lagna: the 7th is Pisces, Mercury's debilitation. The lagna lord, weak by sign, sits in the house of the partner. Neecha-bhanga conditions, such as a well-placed Jupiter (Pisces' lord), often soften it.
In the signs of its friends the Sun and Venus (Leo, Taurus, Libra) Mercury is at ease. In Cancer, the Moon's sign, it is with a planet it counts as an enemy; that happens for Capricorn lagna. The signs of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are neutral ground.
What Mercury aspects from the 7th
Mercury casts only the full seventh aspect (drishti), and from the 7th it falls on the 1st house, the self. There is a neat symmetry: Mercury sits where it is directionally weakest but looks straight at the house where it is strongest. A benefic aspect on the lagna tends to give a quick, sociable, adaptable personality, and people often describe themselves partly through their partnerships.
The 7th lord and Mercury's own lordship

- Gemini lagna: Mercury is the lagnesh and 4th lord, sitting in Sagittarius. The self is invested in the partner, and home and relationship are tightly linked.
- Libra lagna: Mercury rules the 9th and 12th and sits in Aries. The 9th lordship brings a thread of fortune, teachers or travel into partnerships.
- Aquarius lagna: Mercury rules the 5th and 8th and sits in Leo, the Sun's sign. A 5th lord in the 7th is often read as romance or shared study leading to marriage.
In the Mercury dasha
The placement shows most clearly in the Mercury mahadasha, in Mercury's antardasha inside other periods, and in the dasha of the 7th lord. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra supplies the framework used here: the 7th as the house of the spouse and of dealings, Mercury's significations of speech and trade, its single seventh aspect, its digbala in the 1st, and Bhadra yoga when Mercury is in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra. Traditional authors who give house-by-house results generally describe Mercury in the 7th kindly, with an educated or refined spouse and skill in dealings. The texts also repeat that Mercury takes the colour of its companions, so a Mercury here joined by Mars or Saturn is read differently from Mercury alone.
Common misreadings
- Treating zero digbala as ruin. Directional strength is one of several strengths in shadbala. Mercury in the 7th can still be well dignified and productive.
- Reading it without the lagna. For Virgo rising this is a debilitated lagna lord; for Pisces rising it is an exalted Bhadra yoga. The same house, very different stories.
- Expecting a verdict on marriage timing. Mercury in the 7th describes the tone of partnership, not a date; timing comes from the dasha and transits.
- Mixing house systems. Western tropical charts can put Mercury in a different house altogether.
