Taurus, Vrishabha rashi in Sanskrit and Hindi, is the second sign of the sidereal zodiac (30° to 60°), a fixed earth sign ruled by Venus. It is also the sign where the Moon is exalted, so if your Moon sign is Taurus, the planet of the mind sits in one of its most comfortable places in the whole zodiac.
What "Taurus" means in a Vedic chart
Your Vedic rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at birth, not the Sun sign used in Western columns. Vedic astrology also measures signs against the fixed stars, the sidereal zodiac, which today sits about 24° behind the tropical zodiac under Lahiri ayanamsa. So a Western "Taurus" often has the Sun in sidereal Aries, and a Vedic Taurus Moon can belong to someone of any Western sign. The lagna, the rising sign, is a third and separate thing. A free kundli shows all three at once.
Earth, fixed, Venus
Earth is the element of form, the senses and what can be held in the hand. Fixed signs keep and consolidate what movable signs begin. Venus is pleasure, beauty, affection and comfort. Taurus joins them: it is the sign that wants to enjoy life slowly and keep what is good.
The classical body map, the Kalapurusha, gives Taurus the face, which includes the mouth, voice and the sense of taste. Its direction is south, its symbol the bull, and like Aries it is a prishthodaya sign that rises back first. The bull fits well: patient, strong, content in a good pasture, and very hard to move once it has decided to stand still.
Three nakshatras, three moods
Taurus opens with Krittika padas 2 to 4 (0° to 10°), then Rohini (10° to 23°20′), and closes with padas 1 and 2 of Mrigashira (23°20′ to 30°).
The Krittika part is ruled by the Sun with Agni as deity. It gives Taurus a firmer backbone: standards, a sharper tongue, and a pride in doing things properly.
Rohini, ruled by the Moon and presided over by Brahma the creator, is the heart of the sign. In the Puranic story, Rohini was the Moon's favourite among his twenty-seven wives, and the nakshatra carries that sense of attraction, growth and fertility. Muhurta texts count it among the fixed (dhruva) nakshatras, favoured for foundations and anything meant to last.
The Mrigashira part, ruled by Mars with Soma as deity, adds curiosity and a searching quality, a Taurus that keeps looking for something a little better.
Nature and strengths
People with the Moon in Taurus tend to be steady, loyal and warm without being showy. They are good with resources, whether money, food, time or a garden, and they build things that last. Many have a pleasant voice or a strong sense of taste and texture; beauty in ordinary things matters to them. Because the Moon is dignified here, the emotional life is often stable: they recover their calm quickly and give others a feeling of safety.
Growth areas
A fixed sign's gift is persistence; its lesson is flexibility. Taurus can hold on to a routine, a possession or an opinion after it has stopped serving them. Comfort can quietly become inertia, and a very patient person can also be very stubborn when rushed. Learning to let go of what is finished, and to try something new before being forced to, is the usual growth path. A strong Mars or Jupiter, or a movable lagna, often supplies the push. Taurus loves through presence and care: meals, gifts, touch, time. Trust is built slowly and then kept.
For Bhakoot in gun milan, counted from Taurus: Taurus itself, Cancer and Pisces (3/11), Leo and Aquarius (4/10), and Scorpio (1/7) score the full seven points. Gemini and Aries (2/12), Virgo and Capricorn (5/9), and Libra and Sagittarius (6/8) score zero unless an exception applies. The commonly used exceptions cancel the zero when the two sign lords are the same or friends, so Taurus with Libra, both ruled by Venus, is often let off, and so is Taurus with Capricorn or Virgo, whose lords Saturn and Mercury are Venus's friends. As tendencies only: Taurus suits work where patience compounds. Finance and banking, agriculture and food, hospitality, design, music and the voice, property and anything involving craft or luxury goods are classical associations of Venus in an earth sign. Career itself comes from the 10th house, its lord and the running dasha.
Taurus lagna compared with Taurus Moon
With Taurus rising, Venus rules the 1st and 6th houses, and Mercury rules the 2nd and 5th. The standout planet is Saturn, which rules both the 9th and the 10th; a single planet owning a kendra and a trikona is called a yogakaraka, and for Taurus lagna Saturn plays that role. Jupiter, lord of the 8th and 11th, is more mixed for this ascendant than its natural goodness suggests. A Taurus lagna often shows as a calm manner and a solid, unhurried presence.
A Taurus Moon, by contrast, describes the inner need for security and sensory comfort. Someone with an Aries or Gemini lagna and a Taurus Moon can seem quick on the outside while longing for peace and routine within.
Exaltation, moolatrikona and the nodes
The Moon is exalted in Taurus, deepest at 3°, and from 3° to 30° the sign is its moolatrikona. In practice this means the Moon in Taurus is almost always reckoned strong by dignity, whatever else it faces in the chart. No planet among the seven is debilitated here.
Rahu is the exception to certainty. Many texts give Rahu's exaltation in Taurus, and so Ketu's in Scorpio; others place Rahu's exaltation in Gemini. We show this as a disputed point, not a rule, and so should any honest reading.
