Aries, called Mesha rashi in Sanskrit and Hindi, is the first sign of the Vedic zodiac: the sidereal stretch from 0° to 30° of the ecliptic, ruled by Mars, of the fire element and movable (chara) quality. If the Moon stood here when you were born, Aries is your rashi, and it is the sign Indian horoscopes, rashifal and sade sati are all counted from.
Moon sign, lagna and Sun sign
Three different things can be called "your Aries". In India, rashi means the Moon sign: where the Moon was at birth. The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the minute of birth and sets up the twelve houses. The Sun sign is where the Sun was, and Western magazines use the tropical version of it.
Because Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24° behind the tropical one under Lahiri ayanamsa, many people who are "Aries" in Western astrology have a Vedic Sun in Pisces. The Sun enters sidereal Aries around 14 April each year, Mesha Sankranti, which is why Baisakhi and several regional new years fall then. Fire, movable, Mars: what the combination says
Each of the three labels adds something. Fire is heat, light and the urge to act. Movable (chara) signs start things and keep things moving. Mars is courage, energy and the will to defend. Put together, Aries is the most direct sign of the zodiac: the first spark rather than the steady flame.
In the Kalapurusha, the cosmic body laid over the zodiac, Aries is the head. It is linked with the east, its symbol is the ram, and it is a prishthodaya sign that "rises back first". BPHS places it among hills and open ground, the natural range of a ram. Varahamihira's Brihat Jataka pictures a person with the Moon in Aries as quick in action, fond of travel and brave, and later texts keep that picture of haste and courage.
The three nakshatras in Aries
Aries holds Ashwini (0° to 13°20′), Bharani (13°20′ to 26°40′) and the first pada of Krittika (26°40′ to 30°). The nakshatra refines what the sign says:
- Ashwini, ruled by Ketu and presided over by the twin physicians of the gods, gives Aries speed, freshness and a knack for getting help to where it is needed. Its opening degrees are one of the three gandanta junctions, where water signs hand over to fire signs; tradition marks it for care, not fear.
- Bharani, ruled by Venus with Yama as deity, is the most intense part of the sign: it carries, holds and brings things to term. Aries energy here is more sensual and more serious about duty.
- Krittika's first pada, ruled by the Sun and presided over by Agni, falls in Sagittarius navamsa. It adds sharpness of judgement and a teacher's streak.
Two people with an Aries Moon can feel quite different because of this, so the nakshatra is worth reading before the sign.
Nature and strengths
The Aries mind wants a clear target and a starting signal. People with the Moon here tend to be honest to the point of bluntness, physically restless, and happiest when they are first: first to volunteer, first to try, first to speak up for someone being treated unfairly. They recover fast from setbacks and rarely nurse grudges. Leadership in a crisis often comes naturally, because hesitation feels worse to them than a wrong move.

The same fire can run ahead of the facts. Common lessons for this sign are patience with slower people, finishing what was started with such enthusiasm, and pausing before a reply sent in heat. What actually shapes a career is the 10th house, its lord and the dasha running; the sign colours how you work more than what you do.
Aries as lagna versus as Moon sign
With Aries rising, Mars rules both the 1st and the 8th houses, so the body, the self and the hidden, transformative side of life share one lord. The Sun rules the 5th, and Jupiter rules the 9th and 12th, which makes the Sun and Jupiter generally supportive for this lagna. An Aries lagna shows in the body and the approach to life: a direct manner and a readiness to act.
As the Moon sign, Aries describes the inner, emotional climate instead: what excites you, how quickly your mood turns, what you need to feel safe. Someone can have a gentle Cancer lagna and an Aries Moon, and appear calm while feeling impatient underneath.

The Sun is exalted in Aries, deepest at 10°: authority and vitality do well where initiative is rewarded. Saturn is debilitated here, deepest at 20°, because patience and slow endurance find a fast fire sign uncomfortable. A debilitated planet is not a verdict; the rules of neecha-bhanga often lift it, and it can still give strong results by house and by lordship. Mars, the ruler, has its moolatrikona in the first 12°.
