Mars, known as Mangal, Kuja, Bhauma or Angaraka, is the graha of courage and action in Vedic astrology: it signifies energy, younger siblings, land and property, discipline and the will to fight for something. It owns Aries and Scorpio, is exalted in Capricorn at 28 degrees and debilitated in Cancer at 28 degrees, aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th houses from itself, and runs a seven-year mahadasha.
In the classical picture of the planets as a court, Mars is the senapati, the commander. It is not the king and does not want to be; its job is to act, protect and push through. The name Bhauma, "son of the Earth", comes from the Puranic story of its birth from Bhumi, which is also why Mars rules land.
What Mars signifies
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra calls Mars the strength (bala) of Kalapurusha. Its significations fall into a few clear groups.
- Courage and drive: initiative, competitiveness, the ability to take risks and to start things. A well-placed Mars often gives a person who does not wait to be asked.
- Siblings, especially younger ones. Mars is the karaka of the third house, the house of effort and siblings.
- Land, buildings and property. Mars is called the bhumi karaka.
- Conflict and its resolution: sport, the armed forces and police, engineering, surgery and any work with fire, metal or tools. Mars is also a karaka of the sixth house, the house of obstacles and the effort to overcome them.
- Discipline and precision: the part of us that trains, follows a regimen and cuts away what is not needed.
In the symbolic Kalapurusha mapping Mars is linked with the marrow and the body's heat and blood. That is classical symbolism, not a medical statement. Its colour is blood-red, its element fire, its day Tuesday; it is masculine and tamasic, and its presiding deity in BPHS is Skanda (Kartikeya), the commander of the gods.
Dignity
| Condition | Sign |
|---|---|
| Exaltation | Capricorn, deepest at 28° |
| Moolatrikona | Aries 0°–12° |
| Own signs | Aries (after 12°) and Scorpio |
| Debilitation | Cancer, deepest at 28° |
The exaltation says a lot about Mars. It is at its best not in a fire sign but in Capricorn, Saturn's earth sign: raw energy gives its finest results when it is organised, patient and aimed at a long goal. In Aries it is direct and pioneering; in Scorpio it turns inward and becomes persistent and strategic.
In Cancer, the Moon's watery sign, Mars's fire meets emotion. A debilitated Mars can show as courage that comes in waves, or anger that is felt more than expressed. It can also describe deep protectiveness toward family. As with every debility, cancellation rules and the rest of the chart change the result.
When Mars is in its own or exaltation sign and in a kendra from the lagna (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th), the chart has Ruchaka yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, traditionally associated with a strong, capable and energetic person.
Friends and enemies
By natural friendship, Mars counts the Sun, the Moon and Jupiter as friends, Venus and Saturn as neutral, and Mercury as its enemy. The fiery, decisive commander and the quick, many-sided prince do not see eye to eye: one acts, the other weighs options. Mercury, for its part, is neutral toward Mars.
Aspects
Every planet casts a full drishti on the seventh house from itself. Mars adds two special full aspects: the fourth and the eighth. So Mars in the 1st house looks at the 4th, 7th and 8th houses; Mars in the 10th looks at the 1st, 4th and 5th. Whatever Mars aspects receives its energy: activity, heat, urgency, sometimes friction. That can be welcome (a house that needs effort) or demanding (a house that needs calm).
Mars has digbala in the tenth house, where its drive turns into visible achievement.
Manglik: what the tradition says
Mars is the planet behind Manglik dosha. In the common rule, Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house (some lists omit the 2nd) makes a chart Manglik; many astrologers check these houses from the Moon and Venus as well. The same texts give many cancellations, such as Mars in its own or exaltation sign, and the widely followed view that two Manglik charts balance each other. The idea is about energy in partnership, not a verdict on anyone. The Manglik dosha guide walks through the rules and exceptions, and a real kundli matching looks at far more than this one factor.
The Mars mahadasha
Mars rules seven years in the Vimshottari cycle, after the Moon's ten and before Rahu's eighteen. Those born with the Moon in Mrigashira, Chitra or Dhanishta begin life in Mars dasha.
A Mars period tends to be active. Starting ventures, buying or building property, physical training, competition, and dealings with siblings are common themes. Things move faster, and the person often feels more willing to take a stand. With a strong, well-supported Mars these years can be productive and decisive; with a strained Mars, the same energy may show as haste or disputes that ask for patience. The houses Mars rules from the lagna tell you where this energy lands.
Mars in transit, and retrograde
Mars spends about 45 days in a sign and takes about 1.9 years to go round the zodiac. Roughly once in each round it turns retrograde (vakri), and then it can stay in one sign for up to about six months. A long Mars stay concentrates its energy on one area of the chart for a season.
Classical gochar rules treat Mars's transit through the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the natal Moon as favourable, the upachaya houses, where effort brings growth.
Mars in the houses, briefly
- 1st: energetic, direct, quick to act.
- 3rd: courage and enterprise; a classic good placement.
- 4th: energy directed at home and property; peace at home needs attention.
- 6th: good at overcoming rivals and obstacles.
- 10th: directional strength; drive in career.
- 11th: gains through effort and initiative.
These are rough outlines. Sign, aspects, lordship and dasha all shape what Mars does, and one factor never decides a chart.
