Scorpio in this page means sidereal Vrishchika, the sign Vedic astrology fixes with the Lahiri ayanamsa, about 24 degrees behind the Western, tropical Scorpio. As a result, many charts that a Western app lists as "Mars in Scorpio" show Mars in Libra in the kundli. In sidereal Scorpio Mars rules its own house, and this is read as concentrated, enduring and private strength: a commander who plans, waits and does not let go, rather than one who charges first.
Mars's other home
Scorpio is a water sign, fixed (sthira), even and feminine. It is the 8th sign of the kalapurusha, associated with the reproductive organs, hidden matters, research, crisis and transformation, and its symbol is the scorpion. Mars owns it just as it owns Aries, but the two homes are different rooms: Aries is the open field, Scorpio the underground bunker.
What tradition sees in this Mars:
- Staying power. Once committed, this Mars follows through for years.
- Strategy and secrecy. It prefers to know more than it says and to act at the right moment.
- Depth of feeling. Loyalty and resentment can both run deep. Forgiveness may take time.
- Courage in crisis. Where others panic, Mars in Scorpio often becomes calm and practical. Emergency work, surgery, investigation and research suit it.
- Control. The shadow side is a wish to control situations and people; a benefic aspect softens it.
Dignity: own sign
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra lists Scorpio as Mars's own sign (swakshetra) for all 30 degrees; its moolatrikona is in Aries, not here. Since Mars is its own sign lord, the planet's strength depends mainly on house, aspects and the degree within the sign. Some later traditions also assign Ketu a co-rulership of Scorpio; this site follows the classical Parashari view of Mars as the lord.
Ruchaka yoga from Scorpio
With Mars in its own sign in a kendra from the lagna, Ruchaka yoga forms, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas (see the Panch Mahapurush yoga guide). For Mars in Scorpio this applies to:
- Scorpio lagna: Mars on the ascendant as lagna lord, also ruling the 6th.
- Leo lagna: Scorpio is the 4th house; Mars rules the 4th and 9th and is the yogakaraka, in its own sign in a kendra. See Mars in the 4th house.
- Aquarius lagna: Scorpio is the 10th, where Mars also has digbala; Mars rules the 3rd and 10th. See Mars in the 10th house.
- Taurus lagna: Scorpio is the 7th; Mars rules the 7th and 12th.
The yoga's strength still depends on aspects, conjunctions and dasha timing.
The three nakshatras of Scorpio
- Vishakha, pada 4 only (0°–3°20′, lord Jupiter): the last step of a determined, goal-driven nakshatra; Jupiter, a friend of Mars, adds purpose.
- Anuradha, all four padas (3°20′–16°40′, lord Saturn): friendship and devotion under discipline. This Mars is loyal, organised and good at working in groups.
- Jyeshtha, all four padas (16°40′–30°, lord Mercury): the eldest, the protector. Seniority, responsibility and sharp intelligence; it can also bring a guarded, competitive streak.
Aspects from Scorpio
From Scorpio, Mars aspects Aquarius with its 4th drishti, Taurus with its 7th and Gemini with its 8th. Scorpio and Taurus face each other, so the Venus-ruled house opposite receives the full weight of an own-sign Mars.
The house it occupies
Scorpio is the natural 8th house, so the classical parallel is Mars in the 8th house: research, shared resources, sudden change and resilience. For other lagnas:
- Cancer lagna: Scorpio is the 5th, a trikona; the yogakaraka lord of the 5th and 10th sits in its own sign there. See Mars in the 5th house.
- Aries lagna: the lagna lord sits in the 8th, its own sign; strength in the house of crisis and research.
- Capricorn lagna: Mars, lord of the 4th and 11th, sits in the 11th house of gains.
- Pisces lagna: Mars, lord of the 2nd and 9th, sits in the 9th.
The navamsa, aspects, conjunctions and dasha still decide how it plays out.
Manglik, calmly
Mars's own sign does not by itself make or break Manglik status; the house does. From the lagna, Mars in Scorpio falls in a listed house for Scorpio lagna (1st), Libra lagna (2nd), Leo lagna (4th), Taurus lagna (7th), Aries lagna (8th) and Sagittarius lagna (12th). Many traditions count Mars in its own sign as a cancelling factor, and the Moon and Venus are often checked as well. The Manglik dosha guide sets out the details.
Mars transiting Scorpio
A usual passage lasts about 43 days. When Mars turns retrograde here, it can stay roughly seven months. The current and next stays are listed above; the Mars transit page tracks the live position. In gochar, an own-sign Mars is read as a focused, determined season for the house Scorpio occupies from your Moon, most helpful in the 3rd, 6th or 11th from the Moon.
Where readings go wrong
- Treating Scorpio Mars as sinister. Depth and privacy are not darkness. Much of this Mars's strength is endurance.
- Forgetting the moolatrikona difference. Only Aries holds Mars's moolatrikona; Scorpio is own sign throughout.
- Reading the Western sign. See Vedic vs Western sun signs.

A free kundli shows your Mars's sign, house, nakshatra and dignity, and so whether Ruchaka yoga is present. Compare with Mars in Aries, its other own sign, and Mars in Sagittarius.
