Mars in the 7th house places the planet of courage, drive and competition in the house of marriage, partners and open dealings with others. Tradition reads it as a passionate, direct and sometimes combative energy in relationships, and it is one of the placements named in the Manglik rule, a rule that comes with many cancellations.
Everything here is read the Parashari way. Houses are counted whole-sign from the lagna, so the sign seventh from your rising sign is your 7th house; many astrologers then repeat the reading from the Moon sign for a second angle.
What Mars does in the house of the other person
The 7th house is where the chart meets someone else: the spouse, a business partner, a rival in open competition, the public. Mars is the commander, a planet that wants to act first and win. Put the commander in the house of the equal partner and a few themes appear again and again:
- Energy in the bond. Attraction tends to be strong and physical, and the person often wants a partner with spirit rather than a quiet one.
- Who leads. Mars likes to take charge. In partnership that can mean arguments over decisions, or simply two people who both prefer to steer.
- The partner's nature. Traditional readings describe the spouse as active, energetic, frank, sometimes short-tempered, often someone with a technical, sporting or uniformed background.
- Open rivals and trade. The 7th also shows competitors you face directly and deals across the table. Mars here can make a tough, capable negotiator.
The 7th is a kendra, so Mars here is prominent and acts on life openly. It is also one of the two maraka houses, a technical term from longevity calculation that says nothing about marriage on its own. Mars has no directional strength in the 7th: its digbala is in the 10th, and its zero point is the 4th.
Venus, not Mars, is the karaka of this house, so the later maxim about a karaka spoiling its own house does not arise. What matters more is the meeting of opposites: the natural 7th sign is Libra, ruled by Venus, and Mars and Venus are the classic pair of desire and harmony. - Taurus lagna: the 7th is Scorpio, Mars's own sign. Mars is also the 7th lord in its own house, and Ruchaka yoga forms.
- Cancer lagna: the 7th is Capricorn, where Mars is exalted. For Cancer rising Mars rules the 5th and 10th and is the yogakaraka, so this is a notably strong placement with Ruchaka yoga.
- Libra lagna: the 7th is Aries, Mars's own sign and moolatrikona up to 12 degrees. Ruchaka yoga forms, and Mars as 7th lord sits in its own house.
- Capricorn lagna: the 7th is Cancer, where Mars is debilitated (neecha). The drive in partnership may come and go in waves; neecha-bhanga conditions can soften it.
In the signs of its friends (the Sun's Leo, Jupiter's Sagittarius and Pisces) Mars is at ease. In Mercury's Gemini and Virgo, the 7th for Sagittarius and Pisces rising, it sits in an enemy's sign and its directness can meet a partner who prefers talk and analysis.

- 8th aspect on the 2nd house: family, speech and savings. Words can be sharp in the family circle, and money may be spent quickly on shared plans.

The 7th lord, and what Mars rules for you
The lord of the 7th sign carries much of the result. If Mars sits in Sagittarius, Jupiter's strength and position as 7th lord temper Mars a great deal. Then ask which houses Mars rules from your lagna:
- Aries lagna: Mars is the lagnesh and 8th lord, placed in Libra. The self is invested in partnership, and the person often meets themselves through the spouse.
- Leo lagna: Mars rules the 4th and 9th and is the yogakaraka, placed in Aquarius. Home, fortune and partnership are tied together, and a partner can bring luck or property.
- Gemini lagna: Mars rules the 6th and 11th, placed in Sagittarius. Competition and gains flow through partnership; disputes and profit may both come from dealings with others.
Mars in the 7th in its dasha
This placement is most visible in the Mars mahadasha, in Mars antardasha periods, and in the dasha of the 7th lord. A Mars period can bring a marriage or a new business partnership, or it can bring an existing relationship to a point where things must be said plainly. What the classical texts say
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra supplies the principles used here: the 7th as the house of the spouse, the 4th, 7th and 8th aspects of Mars, lordship and yogakaraka status, and Ruchaka yoga when Mars occupies a kendra in its own or exaltation sign. Phaladeepika lists Ruchaka among the five Mahapurusha yogas as well. Authors who give house-by-house results tend to describe Mars in the 7th sternly, with quarrels in marriage and strain with partners. Those lines judged Mars alone; later practice reads them together with dignity, aspects on Mars and the navamsa, which often soften the picture.
Common misreadings
- Treating Manglik as a verdict. The 7th house Mars is one factor in one rule, with cancellations written into the rule itself.
- Forgetting Ruchaka. For three lagnas this is a Mahapurusha yoga, a mark of strength, not a problem.
- Reading only from the Moon sign. A Moon-sign chart is a useful second view, but the birth chart starts from the lagna.
- Ignoring the partner's chart. Marriage is a two-chart question; kundli matching reads both.
