Ketu in the 7th house places the node of detachment and letting go in the house of marriage, partnership and open dealings with others. It tends to give a relationship life with an unusual or inward quality: real loyalty and understanding, but less hunger for the partner to complete the person, and sometimes a feeling of standing slightly apart even when close.
Because Rahu always sits in the opposite house, this placement is never only about the partner. It is one end of an axis whose other end is the self.
What Ketu brings to the house of partnership
Ketu is the karaka of detachment, moksha, intuition and skills that seem already learned. The 7th house, called yuvati or kalatra, governs the spouse, marriage, business partners, contracts and the way a person meets the public. Its natural karaka is Venus, the planet of attraction and pleasure. Ketu is almost the opposite temperament: where Venus wants to enjoy the bond, Ketu asks what the bond is for.
Traditional readings of this pairing tend to describe:
- A partner who is quiet, reserved, spiritually inclined, technically gifted or from a background unlike one's own.
- A relationship style that needs space. The person may be devoted yet not possessive, and may find it hard to explain what they want from a partner.
- Contracts and partnerships entered with less calculation than most people bring, sometimes to the person's cost, sometimes to their freedom.
- An instinctive understanding of other people, as if the lessons of partnership were learned before.
The 7th is a kendra, so whatever sits here acts visibly in daily life. It is also a maraka house in the Parashari scheme, a technical term used in longevity calculations. That label does not describe marriage and is never read from one planet. The nodes take no digbala in any house, so directional strength plays no part.
The sign and its lord decide the tone
Ketu owns no sign in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Like Rahu, it gives the results of the lord of the sign it occupies (its dispositor) and of the planets that join it. So the first question for Ketu in the 7th is simple: whose sign is it in, and how is that planet doing?
Dignity for the nodes is disputed. Many texts give Ketu exaltation in Scorpio, others in Sagittarius, with debilitation in the opposite sign. Applied to the 7th house:
- Taurus lagna: Ketu falls in Scorpio, which many texts call its exaltation. The dispositor is Mars.
- Gemini lagna: Ketu falls in Sagittarius, the other exaltation candidate. Jupiter, the dispositor, leans the partnership toward shared study or faith.
- Scorpio or Sagittarius lagna: Ketu falls in Taurus or Gemini, the signs some call its debilitation. Here the reading leans heavily on Venus or Mercury, the sign lords.
Many astrologers treat Ketu like Mars, so the signs of Mars and Jupiter are commonly read as comfortable ground, and those of the Sun and Moon as less easy. BPHS gives no natural-friendship row for the nodes, so this is a working convention rather than a rule.
Aspects and the Rahu end of the axis
Ketu's 7th aspect, generally accepted, falls on the 1st house. Some traditions also give the nodes 5th and 9th aspects; others do not, and this page does not rely on them.
The more useful fact is that Ketu in the 7th always means Rahu in the 1st house. The axis sets the self against the other: Rahu in the lagna pushes hard to grow, reinvent and stand out, while Ketu in the 7th loosens the grip on partnership. Many people with this axis say their own path took priority for years and relationships found their shape later. Read both ends together or the picture is only half there.
The 7th lord and whose results Ketu gives
Ketu rules no house for any lagna, so it borrows. Here its dispositor is the 7th lord itself, and the strength and house of that planet go a long way toward describing married life. Three examples:
- Aries lagna: Ketu in Libra, dispositor Venus, which rules the 2nd and 7th for Aries. Venus is also the natural karaka of the 7th, so a well-placed Venus can give a warm bond with a partner who values privacy; an afflicted Venus makes the Ketu note of distance stronger.
- Cancer lagna: Ketu in Capricorn, dispositor Saturn, lord of the 7th and 8th. Tradition reads this as a serious, perhaps older or duty-minded partner, with the bond maturing slowly.
- Aquarius lagna: Ketu in Leo, dispositor the Sun, the light the nodes eclipse in myth. A strong Sun often gives a partner of some standing; a weak one can make recognition in the relationship a recurring question.
A Parashari rule widely used for the nodes adds a layer: a node in a kendra or trikona joined with the lord of a trikona or kendra can give raja-yoga-like results. The 7th is a kendra, so Ketu here with a strong 5th or 9th lord is read very differently from Ketu alone.
In Ketu's dasha
The placement shows most clearly in the seven-year Ketu mahadasha, in Ketu antardashas inside other periods, and again in the dasha of the 7th lord. With Ketu in the 7th, these are often years when partnerships come under review: a marriage changing its terms, a business partner stepping away, or simply a clearer sense of what one needs from others.
The review is not the same as an ending. For many people it brings a quieter, more honest bond. How it unfolds depends on the dispositor, the planets joined with Ketu, and transits. The dasha calculator shows when these periods fall.
What the classical texts say
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra supplies the principles used above: the significations of the 7th, Ketu acting like Mars, the nodes following their dispositor, and the dasha scheme. Phaladeepika is among the texts that list results for Ketu in each house. For the 7th, traditional authors tend to give stark themes such as disappointment through the spouse, separation or trouble through partners. These are statements about an unsupported Ketu. Later astrologers soften them considerably when the 7th lord and Venus are strong, or when Jupiter aspects the 7th.
Common misreadings
- Treating it as a marriage verdict. Ketu in the 7th describes a style of bonding, not whether or when someone marries. Those questions go to the 7th lord, Venus and the navamsa.
- Matching on this factor alone. Kundli matching looks at both charts as a whole; one node in the 7th is a small part of that.
- Forgetting Rahu in the lagna. The self-focus that often accompanies this placement comes from the other end of the axis.
- Using tropical houses. These pages count houses whole-sign from the sidereal lagna. Many astrologers also repeat the reading from the Moon sign as a second view.
