Ketu in the 2nd house places the node of detachment in the house of family, accumulated wealth, speech and food. It tends to loosen the grip on all four: the person may speak little or bluntly, care less than most about savings, eat unusually, or feel a step removed from the family they were born into.
That looseness can be a gift as well as a difficulty. Someone who is not tied to possessions or to family expectation is often freer to choose their own values.
What Ketu brings to the house of wealth and speech
Ketu cuts, simplifies and turns inward. The 2nd house, called dhana bhava, holds what we gather and keep: money in hand, the family circle, the voice, the mouth and what goes into it, and the values absorbed in early life. Traditional readings of Ketu here often include:
- Speech that is sparse, abrupt or unconventional; a tendency to say the true thing without cushioning it.
- A casual or irregular relationship with saving; money is earned but not clung to.
- Distinct food habits, simple meals, or long phases of eating in an unusual way.
- Some distance from the family's values or traditions, or living apart from relatives.
- An ear for subtle subjects: languages, scripts, sacred texts or technical vocabulary.
The karaka of the 2nd is Jupiter, the planet of wisdom and wealth. Ketu is not the karaka of this house, so no karaka overlap arises. A strong Jupiter, however, is one of the best supports for this placement: it lets Ketu's detachment turn into a value system rather than neglect.
The 2nd is a panapara (succedent) house and one of the two maraka houses. The maraka label is a technical term from longevity calculation, used only alongside many other factors; it says nothing about the reader's life on its own. Nodes take no digbala.
The sign on the 2nd and Ketu's dispositor
Ketu owns no sign in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and gives the results of its sign lord and of the planets that join it. In the 2nd, that sign lord is the 2nd lord, the ruler of wealth and family, so the two readings merge.
Exaltation is disputed: many texts give Scorpio, others Sagittarius, with Taurus or Gemini as the debilitation. Four rising signs put one of these signs in the 2nd:
- Libra lagna: Scorpio falls in the 2nd, a sign some call Ketu's exaltation; tradition reads this as a sharp, research-minded way with money and words.
- Scorpio lagna: Sagittarius falls in the 2nd, the other candidate for exaltation; speech here often turns philosophical.
- Aries lagna: Taurus, a sign some call Ketu's debilitation. The family and wealth themes may feel less settled, though a strong Venus helps a great deal.
- Taurus lagna: Gemini, the other candidate for debilitation; much depends on Mercury.
Since no single table is agreed, the dispositor carries more weight than any label.
Aspects and Rahu in the 8th
Ketu's generally accepted 7th aspect falls on the 8th house, the house of hidden matters, sudden events, inheritance and research. Whether the nodes also cast 5th and 9th aspects is disputed; this page does not use them.
Ketu in the 2nd always puts Rahu in the 8th. The axis runs between what one keeps openly (family money, speech) and what is hidden or shared (joint resources, other people's money, the unknown). Many people with this axis are drawn to research, investigation or occult study, and find that their resources move through unexpected channels rather than steady accumulation.
The 2nd lord and three examples
Ketu rules no house for any lagna. The planet that matters is the 2nd lord, which is also Ketu's dispositor.
- Aries lagna: Ketu in Taurus, dispositor Venus, ruler of the 2nd and 7th. Venus's strength decides whether Ketu's detachment feels like simplicity or like scarcity; both of Venus's houses are marakas, a technical point that matters only in longevity work.
- Scorpio lagna: Ketu in Sagittarius, dispositor Jupiter, ruler of the 2nd and 5th. Jupiter is also the natural karaka of the house, so a well-placed Jupiter makes this one of the easier forms of the placement.
- Cancer lagna: Ketu in Leo, dispositor the Sun, ruler of the 2nd. Speech may be commanding but brief, and the Sun's house placement shows where the family's wealth goes.
Planets joining Ketu in the 2nd also lend their nature to it. Mercury with Ketu here often sharpens language; the Moon with Ketu can make the emotional tie to family more complicated.
In Ketu's dasha
The seven-year Ketu mahadasha, Ketu antardashas, and the 2nd lord's own periods are when this placement speaks loudest. Typical themes are a change in how one earns or spends, a simpler diet, a rethink of family obligations, or a move away from the family home. The same years can bring study of languages or old texts. None of this is fixed; the dispositor and the running transits shape it.
What the classical texts say
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the 2nd house its significations (wealth, family, speech, the face and eyes, food) and the principles by which the nodes follow their dispositor. Phaladeepika is among the texts that list Ketu's results house by house. For the 2nd, traditional authors tend to describe harsh or unpleasant speech, trouble relating to the mouth or face, and friction with family or with those in authority. These are statements about an unsupported Ketu. Later astrologers soften them substantially when the 2nd lord is strong or Jupiter aspects the house.
Common misreadings
- Equating detachment with poverty. Ketu here describes how a person holds money, not how much they have. The 2nd lord and the 11th say more about amount.
- Forgetting Rahu in the 8th. The hidden, sudden and shared side of resources is the other half of this axis.
- Treating "maraka" as a warning. It is a label from longevity technique, not a prediction.
- Reading from the wrong house system. Houses here are whole-sign from the sidereal lagna; many astrologers also repeat the reading from the Moon sign.
