Ketu in the 3rd house places the node of detachment in the house of courage, effort, younger siblings, skills and short journeys. It is traditionally one of Ketu's most comfortable seats: the person tends to act bravely without making a show of it and to pick up hand or word skills as if they had learned them before.
The 3rd is where effort grows over time, so Ketu's results here usually improve with age rather than arriving all at once.
Why Ketu does well in the 3rd
Ketu is said to act like Mars, and Mars is the natural karaka of the 3rd house, called sahaja or parakrama bhava. Ketu is not formally a karaka of this house, but its Mars-like sharpness suits the house's themes of daring and initiative.
The 3rd is also an upachaya house, one of the houses of growth (3, 6, 10, 11), and an apoklima (cadent) house. Classical authors welcome natural malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th: here their hardness becomes grit instead of damage. With Ketu in the 3rd, Rahu sits in the 9th. The axis runs between one's own effort and the wider framework of belief and fortune. Rahu in the 9th tends to seek unconventional teachers, foreign philosophies or a questioning stance towards inherited religion, while Ketu in the 3rd makes the person's own practice quiet and self-directed. Common misreadings
- Assuming every node is a problem. In the 3rd, the tradition itself leans favourable; fear of Ketu as such misses that.
- Reading sibling distance as conflict. Distance can mean different cities or different interests, nothing more.
- Ignoring Rahu in the 9th. The beliefs and teachers side of this axis often matters as much as the courage side.
- Skipping the house count. Houses here are whole-sign from the sidereal lagna, and many astrologers check the same placement from the Moon sign as well.
