Sagittarius, known as Dhanu rashi in Hindi and Sanskrit, is the ninth sign of the sidereal zodiac, covering 240° to 270°, and it is ruled by Jupiter. It is a dual fire sign whose symbol is an archer who is half man and half horse, and the first 10° are Jupiter's moolatrikona.
Dhanu means "bow". In Indian astrology, "Dhanu rashi" usually refers to the Moon's sign at birth, the janma rashi, which is used for the Sagittarius rashifal, name letters and matching. The Sun passes through sidereal Sagittarius from about mid-December to Makar Sankranti in mid-January, so many people who are Sagittarius by Western Sun sign turn out to be Scorpio by Vedic Sun sign. Fire, flexibility and Jupiter
The fire element (tatva) gives warmth, enthusiasm and a drive to act. The dual (dvisvabhava) quality makes that fire adaptable: it can change direction, hold two views, teach and learn at once. And Jupiter, the lord, is the planet of wisdom, teachers, faith and growth.
Among the three fire signs, Aries starts things and Leo rules them; Sagittarius aims them. The archer's arrow is pointed at something far away, and that is the sign's signature: purpose, principle and the long view. It is the ninth sign from Aries, and in the Kalapurusha scheme it matches the ninth house of dharma, fortune, the father and teachers, higher learning and long journeys.
The half-horse symbol is worth pausing on. Classical texts describe Dhanu as human in its first half and animal in its second, and some astrologers read that as a pull between the ideal and the instinctive, the scholar and the rider. It is also why Sagittarius is traditionally linked to horses, sport and open ground.
The nakshatras in Sagittarius
- Mula, all four padas (240° to 253°20′). Ruled by Ketu, with Nirriti, goddess of dissolution, as deity. Mula means "root": it digs to the bottom of things, clears away what is not essential and starts again from the foundation. The first pada of Mula lies at a gandanta junction, where the water of Scorpio meets the fire of Sagittarius. Tradition marks it as a sensitive point to be read with care, not a reason for worry; much popular fear about Mula is not supported by a balanced reading of the texts.
- Purva Ashadha, all four padas (253°20′ to 266°40′). Ruled by Venus, with Apas, the waters, as deity. Purva Ashadha takes its name from Ashadha, "the unconquered"; it adds confidence, persuasion and a refusal to accept defeat.
- Uttara Ashadha, pada 1 (266°40′ to 270°). Ruled by the Sun. The first pada of Uttara Ashadha gives the last degrees of Sagittarius a steady, principled, leaderly quality.

- Idealism and faith. A need for life to mean something, whether through religion, philosophy or a cause.
- Honesty. A direct way of speaking that people either value or find a little blunt.
- Love of learning. Books, teachers, travel and conversation with people from other backgrounds.
- Optimism. Jupiter's influence gives a hopeful, generous outlook that helps others too.
- Independence. A dislike of being fenced in, whether physically or intellectually.
Growth areas
The arrow aimed far away can miss what is close at hand. Sagittarius natives sometimes promise more than time allows, or preach where listening would serve better. Certainty about one's own principles can become impatience with other people's. Many find their growth in follow-through, in patience with detail, and in holding their convictions with a lighter grip.

As the lagna, Sagittarius gives an open, forward-looking manner. For a Dhanu ascendant, the Sun rules the ninth house and is considered a strong benefic. Mars rules the fifth (a trikona) and the twelfth, and is usually treated as helpful. Jupiter rules the first and fourth. Mercury rules the seventh and tenth, two kendras; Parashari texts note that a natural benefic owning kendras can lose some of its benefic quality. Venus, lord of the sixth and eleventh, is usually seen as less supportive for this rising sign. Sagittarius is Jupiter's own sign, and 0° to 10° is its moolatrikona. A Jupiter there is well placed by dignity, though its house, aspects and the dasha still decide how that shows.
