This page covers Jupiter in sidereal Sagittarius, Dhanu as the Vedic zodiac fixes it with the Lahiri ayanamsa, around 24 degrees behind the Western tropical signs. Because of that gap a Western Sagittarius Jupiter is often a Vedic Scorpio Jupiter, and a Western Capricorn Jupiter may belong here. In Dhanu, Guru is in its own sign, with moolatrikona in the first 10 degrees: the teacher at home in the fire sign of dharma, pilgrimage and higher learning, and one of the clearest expressions of Jupiter anywhere in the zodiac.
Jupiter at home
Sagittarius is fire, dual (dvisvabhava), odd and masculine, the natural 9th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the thighs, facing east, pictured as an archer who is half man and half horse. The 9th is the house of dharma, the father, the guru, long journeys and fortune. Jupiter, the karaka of wisdom, teachers, dharma and fortune, is the lord of this sign, so the planet's significations and the sign's meaning overlap almost completely.
What tradition tends to see here:
- A sense of purpose. Life is organised around a belief, a calling or a set of principles.
- The teacher and the pilgrim. Philosophy, religion, law, higher education, publishing and travel for learning are recurring themes.
- Generosity of outlook. Optimism, frankness and goodwill, sometimes with a tendency to preach.
- Freedom to seek. The archer aims far; the horse half wants room to move. Rigid settings can feel confining.
Dignity: moolatrikona and own sign
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Jupiter two signs of its own, Sagittarius and Pisces, and places its moolatrikona in Sagittarius. For this site that means:
- 0° to 10°: moolatrikona, where Jupiter works most characteristically, second in strength only to exaltation.
- 10° to 30°: own sign (swakshetra), also a strong and comfortable dignity.
Some later texts use slightly different degree spans for moolatrikona; the principle that the start of Sagittarius is Jupiter's most "official" seat is shared.
Because Jupiter is its own landlord, there is no host to please. The question moves elsewhere: which houses does Jupiter rule for your lagna, is it combust or heavily aspected, and how strong is it in the navamsa?
Mula, Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha
- Mula (0° to 13°20′, lord Ketu): the root. The whole moolatrikona lies inside Mula. Jupiter here is read as a search for first principles, a readiness to pull up what is false by the roots, and an interest in spiritual or philosophical foundations.
- Purva Ashadha (13°20′ to 26°40′, lord Venus): the invincible, linked with the purifying waters and with firm conviction. Jupiter here is persuasive and confident, with Venus adding eloquence.
- Uttara Ashadha (26°40′ to 30°, pada 1 only, lord Sun): the later, lasting victory. Jupiter here gains the Sun's steadiness and a sense of public duty.
Hamsa yoga and the lagnas
Hamsa yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas, forms when Jupiter is in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra from the lagna. For Sagittarius that means four lagnas:
- Sagittarius lagna: Jupiter is in the 1st, as lagna lord and 4th lord, with directional strength. See Jupiter in the 1st house.
- Gemini lagna: Sagittarius is the 7th, and Jupiter rules the 7th and 10th. Hamsa yoga forms, though many astrologers also weigh kendradhipati dosha here.
- Virgo lagna: Sagittarius is the 4th, with Jupiter ruling the 4th and 7th. Again Hamsa yoga forms alongside the kendradhipati question.
- Pisces lagna: Sagittarius is the 10th, and Jupiter rules the 1st and 10th: the lagna lord in its own sign in the house of career.
The Panch Mahapurush yoga article covers the five together. Beyond the kendras, the natural reading is for Aries lagna, where Sagittarius is the 9th house and Jupiter, as 9th lord, sits in its own house of fortune: see Jupiter in the 9th house. For Leo lagna Sagittarius is the 5th, and Jupiter as 5th lord is again in a trikona of its own.
What it aspects
From Dhanu Jupiter aspects Aries with its 5th aspect, Gemini with its 7th and Leo with its 9th. A strong Jupiter's drishti is valued, so the houses these signs occupy in your chart are read as supported.
Jupiter's transit through its own sign
In gochar, Jupiter normally stays in Sagittarius about thirteen months. Retrograde motion sometimes carries it back into Scorpio before it settles. The stays are listed above; the Jupiter transit page follows it live.
Counted from the natal Moon, the classical favourable positions are the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th. With Jupiter in Sagittarius those are the Moon signs Scorpio (2nd), Leo (5th), Gemini (7th), Aries (9th) and Aquarius (11th). A transiting Jupiter in its own sign is often described as giving more of what it gives. For other Moon signs the year is simply less emphasised. Transits only activate what the birth chart and the running mahadasha already hold.
Where views differ, and misreadings
- Own sign is not a guarantee. A combust or badly aspected Jupiter in Sagittarius still gives less, and a dusthana lordship (for example 8th house for Taurus lagna, 12th for Capricorn lagna) colours it.
- Kendradhipati and Hamsa together. For Gemini and Virgo lagnas, schools differ on how the two combine; most still treat the yoga as real.
- Tropical Sagittarius. A Western Sagittarius Jupiter is frequently sidereal Scorpio.
Compare Jupiter in Pisces, its other own sign, and Jupiter in Capricorn, the next sign and its debilitation.
