Capricorn in Vedic astrology is sidereal Makara, measured with the Lahiri ayanamsa about 24 degrees behind tropical Capricorn, which means a Western "Jupiter in Capricorn" is frequently sidereal Sagittarius, Jupiter's own sign, and it is worth checking before worrying. In sidereal Makara, Guru is debilitated (neecha), deepest at 5 degrees: the teacher of ideals placed in Saturn's earth sign of duty, structure and results, where wisdom has to prove itself in practice.
Ideals in a practical sign
Capricorn is earth, movable (chara), even and feminine, the natural 10th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the knees, facing south. Its symbol is the makara, a crocodile-like sea creature with a deer's head: a being of two worlds, patient and persistent. It is the sign of work, status, discipline and responsibility. Jupiter, karaka of wisdom, teachers, children, dharma and fortune, is at its best when it can think broadly and give freely.
In a sign that measures everything by results, that generous breadth is constrained. Traditional and modern readings describe it in terms like these:
- Wisdom that must be useful. Abstract ideals feel less convincing than what works. Many people with this placement become highly practical advisers.
- Faith tested by experience. Belief is often questioned, rebuilt or expressed through duty rather than devotion.
- Cautious generosity. Giving is careful and structured rather than lavish.
- Late recognition. Saturn's sign rewards patience; the teacher's standing may come through long effort.
None of this is a verdict on a person's goodness or luck.
Why Jupiter is debilitated here
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra places Jupiter's exaltation in Cancer at 5 degrees and its debilitation in the opposite sign, Capricorn, at the same 5 degrees. The whole sign counts as debilitation, with the effect strongest near that point. The sign lord is Saturn, and the two regard each other as neutral: Saturn is not hostile to Jupiter, but not a warm host either.
Neecha-bhanga, without drama
Classical astrology rarely stops at "debilitated". It looks for neecha-bhanga, cancellation of debility. The conditions most often used for Jupiter in Capricorn are:
- Saturn, lord of Capricorn, in a kendra from the lagna or from the Moon;
- the Moon, lord of Cancer where Jupiter is exalted, in such a kendra;
- Mars, which is exalted in Capricorn, in such a kendra;
- Jupiter itself exalted in the navamsa.
Different texts list these slightly differently and weigh them differently. When one or more holds, the debility is read as softened, and some astrologers describe a debilitation overcome as a source of unusual resilience. The neech bhang raj yoga article goes into this in more depth.
The nakshatras: Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta
- Uttara Ashadha (0° to 10°, padas 2 to 4, lord Sun): lasting victory. The deepest debility at 5 degrees falls here, yet the nakshatra lord is Jupiter's friend, and the star itself is associated with righteousness that endures.
- Shravana (10° to 23°20′, lord Moon): listening. Linked with learning by hearing, tradition and teaching. Jupiter in Shravana is often read as a devoted student and careful transmitter of knowledge.
- Dhanishta (23°20′ to 30°, padas 1 and 2, lord Mars): rhythm and wealth. Jupiter here is linked with music, organised effort and resources built step by step.
All three lords are friends of Jupiter, which many astrologers see as easing the debility at the nakshatra level.
By house: the lagna decides a lot
- Capricorn lagna: Jupiter is in the 1st and rules the 3rd and 12th. It keeps its directional strength in the lagna. See Jupiter in the 1st house.
- Aries lagna: Capricorn is the 10th house, its natural position, and Jupiter is the 9th lord in the 10th, a pairing of fortune and career that tradition values even when the planet is debilitated. See Jupiter in the 10th house.
- Cancer lagna: Capricorn is the 7th, with Jupiter ruling the 6th and 9th; its 7th aspect falls on the lagna, Cancer, its exaltation sign.
- Virgo lagna: Capricorn is the 5th, and Jupiter, lord of the 4th and 7th, sits in a trikona.
- Sagittarius lagna: the lagna lord is debilitated in the 2nd house of family and wealth.
Aspects from Capricorn
From Makara Jupiter aspects Taurus with the 5th aspect, Cancer, its exaltation sign, with the 7th, and Virgo with the 9th. A debilitated Jupiter's aspect is still a benefic's aspect; tradition reads it as gentler support rather than none.
The transit through Makara
Jupiter usually spends about twelve months in Capricorn in gochar. The stays are listed above; the Jupiter transit page shows the current position.
Guru gochar is read from the natal Moon, and the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th positions are the classical supportive ones. With Jupiter in Capricorn, those are the Moon signs Sagittarius (2nd), Virgo (5th), Cancer (7th), Taurus (9th) and Pisces (11th). Many astrologers note that a transiting Jupiter in its debilitation sign gives its support more modestly. For other Moon signs the year is simply less supported, not a year to fear. The natal chart and the running dasha still carry the main weight.
Common misreadings
- "Debilitated means unlucky." It means a planet working in a sign unsuited to it. Results depend on much more.
- Ignoring neecha-bhanga. Always check Saturn, the Moon and Mars before concluding.
- Tropical confusion. A Western Capricorn Jupiter is often sidereal Sagittarius, its own sign.
- Reading one placement as a life story. The lagna, lordships and dasha change the picture fundamentally.
Compare Jupiter in Cancer, the exalted opposite, and Jupiter in Aquarius.
