In Vedic (sidereal) astrology the Sun is in Makara from about 14–15 January to 12–13 February, whereas the Western "Sun in Capricorn" (tropical) spans 21–22 December to 19–20 January. The Vedic entry is Makar Sankranti itself, which is why that festival falls in mid-January while the Western Capricorn begins at the December solstice. Here the Sun sits in the sign of Saturn, its enemy and, in the Puranas, its son: the planet of command learns patience, structure and the slow climb.
The king in the house of the worker
Capricorn is an earth sign, movable (chara), even and feminine, ruled by Saturn. Its symbol is the makara, a crocodile-like sea creature with a deer's head, at home on land and in water. As the 10th sign of the kalapurusha it is tied to the knees, to work, status, public duty and institutions. The Sun wants authority; Capricorn gives it, but only after it has been earned.
How it often shows:
- Authority through responsibility. Rank comes from carrying the load, and the person tends to take on duties early.
- Pragmatism. Ambition is practical and long-term, with less interest in display than in results.
- Reserve. Warmth may be held back; respect is shown through reliability.
- A complicated relationship with hierarchy, including sometimes with the father or with employers, which tends to mature with age.
Tradition assigns the knees to Capricorn; that is a symbolic association only.
Dignity: an enemy's sign
All 30° of Capricorn are an enemy's sign for the Sun. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra lists Saturn and Venus as the Sun's natural enemies, and Saturn regards the Sun as an enemy too. The Sun and Saturn are the zodiac's great opposites: light and time, the ruler and the servant, the self and duty. Where the Sun is exalted (Aries), Saturn is debilitated, and the reverse holds in Libra.
In practice the result depends on Saturn. A strong Saturn gives the Sun a stern but reliable host, and the combination can build lasting authority. An afflicted Saturn makes recognition slower. Their temporary friendship in your chart, from their mutual house positions, can soften the natural enmity.
Nakshatras in Capricorn
- Uttara Ashadha, padas 2–4 (0°–10°, lord Sun): the Sun in its own nakshatra, bringing principled, patient victory. The most comfortable stretch of the sign for the Sun.
- Shravana (10°–23°20′, lord Moon): listening and learning. The Moon, the Sun's friend, lends receptivity; the person often gains authority by knowing and heeding tradition.
- Dhanishta, padas 1–2 (23°20′–30°, lord Mars): wealth and rhythm. Mars, another friend, brings drive and a sense of timing.
Which house: your lagna decides
- Aries lagna: the 10th house, Capricorn's natural house, where the Sun has digbala and rules the 5th. Career strength outweighs the enemy sign for many readers; see Sun in the 10th house.
- Capricorn lagna: the 1st house, with the Sun ruling the 8th. A serious, private presence; see Sun in the 1st house.
- Taurus lagna: the 9th house, with the 4th lord in the house of fortune.
- Cancer lagna: the 7th house, with the 2nd lord there; partners may be dutiful and ambitious.
- Leo lagna: the 6th house, the lagna lord in an upachaya house, good for overcoming competition.
- Virgo lagna: the 5th house, with the 12th lord in a trikona.
From Capricorn the Sun's full aspect (drishti) falls on Cancer, the Moon's sign.
Makar Sankranti and the transit
The Sun's gochar through Capricorn takes about 30 days. Its start, Makar Sankranti, is one of India's most widely observed festivals, celebrated under names such as Pongal and Uttarayan, and it traditionally marks the start of Uttarayana, the Sun's northward half of the year. Astronomically the Sun turns north at the December solstice; the festival follows the sidereal sign, and the gap between the two is the ayanamsa at work. For your own chart count from the Moon sign; the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Moon are traditionally favourable. The live position is on the Sun transit page.
What the texts say
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the relationships used here and the general rule that a planet in an enemy's sign gives mixed results. Later classical texts sketch the Sun in Capricorn as hard-working, thrifty and sometimes troubled by those it serves. Those sketches were written for the Sun on its own. A Capricorn Sun in the 10th house for Aries lagna and one in the 6th for Leo lagna read very differently, and the lagna should always come first.
Mistakes to avoid
- Merging the two zodiacs. A Western Capricorn is mostly a Vedic Sagittarius Sun; see Vedic vs Western sun sign.
- Reading "enemy sign" as failure. It describes effortful, earned authority, which is often very durable.
- Ignoring Saturn. The host's condition is essential.
- Stopping at the sign. The lagna, conjunctions, navamsa and running dasha shape the outcome.
