In Vedic (sidereal) astrology the Sun sits in Meena from about 14–15 March to 13–14 April, while the Western "Sun in Pisces" (tropical) covers 18–19 February to 20–21 March. So most people born in late March or early April, Western Aries, have a sidereal Pisces Sun, and most Western Pisceans have the Sun in sidereal Aquarius. The Sun in Pisces is the Sun in the last sign of the zodiac, the water sign of its friend Jupiter: the self turns inward, toward compassion, imagination and letting go.
The Sun at the end of the circle
Pisces is a water sign, dual (dvisvabhava), even and feminine, ruled by Jupiter, with two fish swimming head to tail as its symbol. As the 12th sign of the kalapurusha it rules the feet, and the themes of release, expense, sleep, retreat, foreign lands and liberation. The Sun, planet of the individual self, meets a sign whose purpose is to dissolve boundaries.
Common expressions:
- Quiet authority. Leadership through empathy, counsel or spiritual example rather than command.
- Imagination. Art, music, film, poetry and any work that deals in images and feeling suit this Sun.
- Service and sacrifice. Hospitals, charities, ashrams and institutions away from the public eye often feature.
- A soft ego. The person may downplay their own claims, which can read as humility or as a lack of assertiveness.
Tradition links Pisces with the feet; that is a symbolic mapping, not a health statement.
Dignity: a friend's sign
All 30° of Pisces are a friend's sign for the Sun. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra lists Jupiter as the Sun's natural friend, and Jupiter returns the friendship. With both Jupiter's signs (Sagittarius and Pisces) friendly ground, the Sun always has a welcome in Jupiter's houses.
Jupiter's condition still decides much. A strong Jupiter makes this a wise, generous Sun with a spiritual or teaching bent; a weak Jupiter can leave the Sun diffuse and uncertain of its aims. Since Pisces is a water sign, the Moon's state also colours the emotional tone.
Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati
- Purva Bhadrapada, pada 4 (0°–3°20′, lord Jupiter): the final quarter of an intense, idealistic nakshatra, here softened by the watery sign.
- Uttara Bhadrapada (3°20′–16°40′, lord Saturn): depth, patience and self-control. Saturn is the Sun's enemy, yet the nakshatra is known for steadiness and wisdom; the Sun learns restraint.
- Revati (16°40′–30°, lord Mercury): the nourisher, guiding travellers safely home. Gentle, kind and protective. The very end of Revati meets the start of Ashwini, a junction tradition calls gandanta; it marks a threshold to note, not a reason for worry.
By house: it depends on your lagna
- Pisces lagna: the 1st house, with the Sun ruling the 6th. A person who faces daily effort and service head-on.
- Aries lagna: the 12th house, Pisces's natural house, with the 5th lord in the house of retreat and foreign places. See Sun in the 12th house.
- Gemini lagna: the 10th house with digbala, the 3rd lord at the top of the chart; communication and initiative drive the career. See Sun in the 10th house.
- Cancer lagna: the 9th house, with the 2nd lord in the house of fortune and teachers.
- Scorpio lagna: the 5th house, with the 10th lord in a trikona, joining career with intelligence and merit.
- Virgo lagna: the 7th house, with the 12th lord facing the lagna.
From Pisces the Sun's full aspect (drishti) falls on Virgo, Mercury's sign.
The transit and the end of the solar year
The Sun's gochar through Pisces lasts about 30 days, from Meena Sankranti to Mesha Sankranti, which in many regional calendars begins the new solar year. As with Sagittarius, many North Indian households observe this month as kharmas, a time when weddings and similar ceremonies are generally postponed; that is a calendar custom, not a reading of anyone's chart. Personally, count from your Moon sign: the Sun is considered helpful in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Moon. The live position is on the Sun transit page.
Common confusions
- "I'm an Aries, not a Pisces." In Western terms, perhaps. In Vedic terms your Sun may well be in Pisces, and your rashi comes from the Moon. See Vedic vs Western sun sign and the ayanamsa.
- Reading softness as weakness. A friend's sign supports the Sun; Pisces simply changes how it shines.
- Treating the 12th-sign symbolism as your 12th house. Your actual house comes from the lagna.
- Reading it alone. Conjunctions, the navamsa and the running dasha all matter.
Neighbours: Sun in Aquarius and, as the circle closes, Sun in Aries, its exaltation.
