In Vedic (sidereal) astrology the Sun occupies Kumbha from about 12–13 February to 14–15 March; the Western "Sun in Aquarius" (tropical) is 19–20 January to 18–19 February. The overlap is only a week or so, which means most people who call themselves Aquarius in Western terms have a sidereal Capricorn Sun, and many Western Pisceans have it here. In Aquarius the Sun is again in Saturn's territory, this time an airy, fixed sign, and the self tends to find its purpose in ideas, groups and causes larger than itself.
Air, a water-bearer and a public-minded Sun
Aquarius is an air sign, fixed (sthira), odd and masculine, ruled by Saturn. Its symbol is a man carrying a water pot, someone who carries what others need. As the 11th sign of the kalapurusha it relates to the calves, to gains, friends, networks, elder siblings and hopes fulfilled. The Sun normally wants to be the centre; in Aquarius the centre is the community.
How this can appear:
- Principle over personality. The person often defends a system, a cause or a group rather than their own position.
- Independence. A fixed air sign holds opinions firmly and can seem detached or unconventional.
- Leadership in networks. Authority tends to come through associations, organisations, science or social work.
- A cool exterior. Warmth is expressed as fairness and service rather than personal display.
Tradition gives Aquarius the calves and shanks; this is symbolic only.
Dignity: Saturn's second sign
For all 30° the Sun is in an enemy's sign here. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra makes Saturn a natural enemy of the Sun, and Saturn returns the feeling. Saturn's own nature is humble work and endurance, the opposite of royal command, so the Sun's pride has to make room for collective duty.
Two things soften this. First, Aquarius is an odd, masculine sign like Leo and Aries, which suits the Sun's temperament better than Capricorn does. Second, the Sun's single full aspect (drishti) from Aquarius falls on Leo, its own sign. The house Leo occupies in your chart therefore gets the Sun's direct gaze, and tradition treats a planet aspecting its own sign as protecting that house. As always, Saturn's condition and the temporary relationship between the two in your chart shape the final result.
Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada
- Dhanishta, padas 3–4 (0°–6°40′, lord Mars): rhythm, music and resources. Mars, the Sun's friend, gives energy and a practical streak.
- Shatabhisha (6°40′–20°, lord Rahu): the hundred healers. Research, secrecy, technology and healing. Rahu is not a friend of the Sun, so the self here can be solitary, questioning and unusual.
- Purva Bhadrapada, padas 1–3 (20°–30°, lord Jupiter): intensity and idealism. Jupiter, a friend, turns the Sun toward conviction and sometimes toward sacrifice for a cause.
House placement varies by lagna
- Aquarius lagna: the 1st house, with the Sun ruling the 7th and aspecting it. Partnerships are a central theme of identity.
- Aries lagna: the 11th house, Aquarius's natural house, with the 5th lord among gains. The Sun is traditionally strong in this upachaya house; see Sun in the 11th house.
- Taurus lagna: the 10th house with digbala, the 4th lord at the top of the chart; see Sun in the 10th house.
- Leo lagna: the 7th house, the lagna lord opposite the lagna and aspecting it, a person whose partner or public shapes them strongly.
- Gemini lagna: the 9th house, with the 3rd lord in the house of fortune.
- Libra lagna: the 5th house, with the 11th lord in a trikona.
As a transit
The Sun's gochar through Aquarius lasts about 30 days, starting at Kumbha Sankranti. It is traditionally read as a month for collective work, friendships and long-range plans. Count its personal effect from your Moon sign; tradition favours the Sun's passage through the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Moon. The current position is on the Sun transit page.
Classical descriptions, read with care
Later classical texts describe the Sun in Aquarius in plain terms: a person who works hard, keeps some distance from others and may meet obstacles in personal ambition. Those lines judge the Sun by its sign alone. In a real chart an Aquarius Sun in the 10th or 11th house often reads far more positively, and one supported by a strong Saturn can hold steady, long-lasting positions.
Where people get it wrong
- Western Aquarius is not Vedic Aquarius. The sidereal zodiac runs about 24° behind; see Vedic vs Western sun sign.
- Reading coolness as weakness. The Sun here gives public spirit rather than personal display.
- Forgetting the aspect on Leo. It is one of this placement's real strengths.
- Judging from one factor. Lagna, conjunctions, navamsa and the running dasha all change the result.
On either side: Sun in Capricorn and Sun in Pisces. Compare too Sun in Leo, the sign it aspects.
