Aquarius, called Kumbh rashi in Hindi (Kumbha in Sanskrit), is the eleventh sign of the sidereal zodiac, from 300° to 330°, and it is ruled by Saturn. It is a fixed air sign whose symbol is a man carrying a water pot, and its first 20° are Saturn's moolatrikona, the portion where Saturn is most at home.
"Kumbh" means pot or pitcher. In Indian usage "Kumbh rashi" means the Moon was in Aquarius at your birth, your janma rashi, which is the sign the Aquarius rashifal is written for. It is not the same as a Western Aquarius, which uses the Sun in the tropical zodiac; the difference is explained in Vedic vs Western signs.
Air, fixity and Saturn
Air (tatva) is the element of ideas, contact and exchange. The fixed (sthira) quality gives those ideas staying power: Aquarius holds its principles firmly. And Saturn, the lord, brings seriousness, fairness, duty and concern for the many rather than the few.
Saturn rules both Capricorn and Aquarius, but they show different faces of it. Capricorn is Saturn at work in the world, building a position. Aquarius is Saturn thinking about the system as a whole: rules, society, what is fair for everyone. It is the more reflective and the more unconventional of the two.
Aquarius is the eleventh sign from Aries. In the Kalapurusha scheme it echoes the eleventh house of gains, friends, networks, elder siblings and hopes fulfilled. That is why the sign is so often associated with groups, communities and shared aims.
The image of the man pouring from his pot is also a picture of giving: the water is not kept, it is shared. In the Indian calendar, the name echoes the Kumbh Mela, which tradition times by Jupiter's position; at Haridwar that is Jupiter in Aquarius.
The nakshatras in Aquarius
- Dhanishta, padas 3 and 4 (300° to 306°40′). Ruled by Mars. The second half of Dhanishta brings rhythm, music and a sociable, generous energy into the start of Aquarius.
- Shatabhisha, all four padas (306°40′ to 320°). Ruled by Rahu, with Varuna, lord of the cosmic waters, as deity. Shatabhisha, "a hundred healers", is the most distinctly Aquarian part of the sign: private, investigative, independent, drawn to research and to healing in the broad traditional sense. Its symbol is an empty circle, often read as a boundary drawn around a secret or a sacred space.
- Purva Bhadrapada, padas 1 to 3 (320° to 330°). Ruled by Jupiter, with Aja Ekapada, a form of Rudra, as deity. Purva Bhadrapada adds intensity and idealism: strong convictions and a readiness to sacrifice comfort for them.
Typical nature and strengths
- Independent thinking. Aquarius natives often reach their own conclusions and are not easily swayed by fashion.
- Fairness and a social conscience. A concern for how systems treat people, especially those with less power.
- Friendship. Loyal to friends and groups, often the one who keeps a circle connected.
- Steadiness. The fixed quality and Saturn together give patience with long projects.
- Originality. A willingness to try the unusual approach, especially where the usual one has failed.
Growth areas
The same detachment that allows clear thinking can make Aquarius seem distant in close relationships, more comfortable with ideas about people than with feelings. Firm principles can harden into stubbornness. Many Aquarius natives find growth in letting warmth show, in accepting that others may be right, and in caring for the one person in front of them as much as for the many.
Relationships and matching
For an Aquarius Moon, the Moon signs that give the full seven Bhakoot points are Aquarius itself, Aries (3/11), Taurus (4/10), Leo (1/7), Scorpio (10/4) and Sagittarius (11/3). Pairs 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart score zero unless an exception applies. Capricorn and Aquarius sit 2/12 apart, but many texts cancel the fault because Saturn rules both. Bhakoot is one of eight factors; our gun milan guide explains how they add up to 36, and why nakshatras and whole charts matter more than the total.
Aquarius often wants a partner who is also a friend, with room for both people to keep their own interests.
Work themes
As tendencies, not guarantees: science and technology, research, social work and public service, organisations and networks, law and reform, teaching, and any role that works with groups or systems. The tenth house and the running dasha are what show a real career.
Aquarius as lagna and as Moon sign
As the Moon sign, Aquarius shapes the mind and is the reference for transits. Its sade sati begins when Saturn enters Capricorn, the sign before it, and ends when Saturn leaves Pisces. As with Capricorn, Saturn owns the sign, and many astrologers feel this softens the period.
As the lagna, Aquarius gives a composed, somewhat reserved, independent manner. For a Kumbh ascendant, Venus rules the fourth and ninth houses, a kendra and a trikona, making it the yogakaraka in the Parashari scheme. Saturn rules the first and twelfth. Mercury rules the fifth and eighth, and Jupiter the second and eleventh, both with mixed results. Mars, lord of the third and tenth, often gives drive in work. These are starting points; one factor never decides a chart, and the whole kundli is read together.
Dignities in Aquarius
Aquarius is Saturn's own sign and holds its moolatrikona from 0° to 20°. A Saturn there has dignity, though house placement, aspects and the dasha still decide how it expresses.
No planet among the seven is exalted or debilitated in Aquarius, and it is opposite Leo, which likewise has no exalted or debilitated planet. On the nodes, traditions differ: some modern authors treat Rahu as a co-ruler of Aquarius, much as some make Ketu a co-ruler of Scorpio, while BPHS gives Saturn alone. We present this as a difference of opinion, not a settled fact.
Neighbouring signs
Aquarius sits between Capricorn, Saturn's other sign, and Pisces, the last sign, where the zodiac dissolves back into water. Its opposite is Leo: the individual and the collective, the king and the citizen. See the rashi overview for all twelve.
