Gemini, known as Mithuna rashi, is the third sign of the Vedic zodiac (60° to 90° sidereal): an air sign of dual (dvisvabhava) quality ruled by Mercury. It is the sign of conversation, trade and connection, and a Gemini Moon sign describes a mind that thinks by talking, reading and comparing.
Which Gemini are we talking about?
In Indian astrology your rashi is the Moon's sign at birth; the lagna is the sign rising in the east at that minute; the Sun sign is a third thing, and Western astrology reckons it on the tropical zodiac. Vedic signs are measured on the sidereal zodiac, about 24° behind the tropical one under Lahiri ayanamsa, so the Sun sits in sidereal Gemini roughly from mid-June to mid-July, not late May to late June. Air, dual, Mercury
Air is movement, contact and thought. Dual signs are part movable, part fixed; they bridge, adapt and hold two things at once. Mercury is intellect, speech, writing, trade and friends. The combination gives Gemini its signature: a restless, sociable intelligence that wants to understand everything and explain it to someone.
The symbol is a couple, a man and a woman; Varahamihira describes them as holding a mace and a vina, strength and art side by side. In the Kalapurusha, Gemini is the arms and shoulders, the limbs that reach, write and exchange. It belongs to the west and is a shirshodaya sign, rising head first; tradition says a planet in a head-first sign tends to show its results early in its period.
Mrigashira, Ardra and Punarvasu
Gemini opens with padas 3 and 4 of Mrigashira (0° to 6°40′), then holds all of Ardra (6°40′ to 20°), and ends with padas 1 to 3 of Punarvasu (20° to 30°). The three could hardly be more different.
Mrigashira, ruled by Mars with Soma as deity, is the searching deer: a Gemini who is curious, a little anxious, always following one more lead.
Ardra is ruled by Rahu and presided over by Rudra, the storm form of Shiva. Its symbol is a teardrop. This is the Gemini that learns through upheaval: sharp, questioning, sometimes stormy, and often very good at research, analysis and technology. Muhurta texts class Ardra as a sharp (tikshna) nakshatra, suited to decisive, cutting actions rather than gentle beginnings.
Punarvasu, ruled by Jupiter with Aditi, mother of the gods, as deity, means "good again": the return of light after the storm. Here Gemini becomes more generous, hopeful and philosophical, a communicator who teaches.
Nature and strengths
The Gemini Moon enjoys variety. People with it are often witty, quick learners, good with language and numbers, and comfortable with many kinds of people. They are natural connectors who introduce friends, trade ideas and see links others miss. Being dual, they adapt fast and can hold two points of view without feeling threatened; that makes them fair-minded mediators and lively teachers. Growth areas
A mind that loves options can find it hard to choose one. Scattered energy, starting several things at once, second-guessing, and talking through a feeling instead of feeling it are the usual lessons. A Gemini Moon can also mistake information for wisdom. Depth tends to come from committing to one discipline long enough for it to repay. A steady Saturn or Jupiter, or a fixed lagna, often provides that anchor. Gemini lagna and Gemini Moon
With Gemini rising, Mercury rules the 1st and the 4th houses, so self and home share a lord. Venus rules the 5th and 12th and is usually a friendly planet for this lagna. Saturn rules the 8th and 9th. Jupiter rules the 7th and 10th, two angles; classical texts note that a natural benefic owning two kendras (kendradhipati) can lose some of its simple goodness, which is why Jupiter's results for Gemini lagna are read carefully rather than assumed. A Gemini lagna shows in the body and bearing: expressive hands, a quick manner, a talkative presence. A Gemini Moon lives inside: a busy mind, a need for stimulation, and moods that shift with new information.
Exaltation, debilitation and the Rahu question
No planet among the seven is exalted or debilitated in Gemini, and no moolatrikona falls here. Mercury is simply in its own sign. The open question is Rahu: some texts place its exaltation in Gemini instead of Taurus. Since the sources genuinely disagree, a careful reading does not lean hard on either view.
