Vedic astrology places Venus in sidereal Gemini (Mithuna), a sign tied to the stars through the Lahiri ayanamsa and running about 24 degrees behind the Gemini of Western, tropical charts. As a result, a Western "Venus in Gemini" frequently turns out to be Venus in Taurus in the kundli, and a Western Venus in Cancer can land here. In the sidereal chart, Venus in Gemini means love and beauty filtered through the mind: charm in words, delight in ideas, and a light, sociable touch in relationships.
Venus in the sign of the couple
Venus stands for love, marriage, art, beauty, comfort and vehicles. Gemini is air, dual (dvisvabhava), odd and masculine, the 3rd sign of the kalapurusha, ruling the arms and shoulders and facing west. Its symbol is a man and a woman together, which is apt for a love planet: the sign is about pairing, exchange and conversation.
Typical colourings:
- Words as affection. Letters, messages, jokes, a good story. Many people with this Venus court and are courted through talk.
- Versatile taste. Interest in several arts at once: writing, music with lyrics, theatre, design, languages.
- Sociability. Friendships are wide and lively; the circle can matter as much as one relationship.
- Youthful manner. A playful, curious approach to beauty and pleasure.
- The shadow. Restlessness, flirtation that means less than it seems, or difficulty settling on one choice.
Dignity: a friend's sign, both ways
In Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's natural friendships Venus and Mercury are mutual friends, so Gemini is a friend's sign for Venus throughout. The same is true of Virgo, Mercury's other sign, except that Venus is debilitated there; Gemini gives the friendship without that complication.
A friend's sign is a supportive, not dominant, dignity. Mercury's strength is the key test: a well-placed Mercury gives the Gemini Venus skill and polish, while an afflicted or combust Mercury can scatter it. Since Venus is never more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, the Sun will be in Gemini or within two signs of it, and Mercury is always near the Sun too, so Sun, Mercury and Venus are often grouped together in such charts. Check whether Venus is combust (asta).
There is no Malavya yoga from Gemini, since the yoga needs Venus in Taurus, Libra or Pisces.
Mrigashira, Ardra and Punarvasu
- Mrigashira, padas 3 and 4 (0°–6°40′, lord Mars): the curious, questing opening degrees. Attraction is sparked by novelty and the chase.
- Ardra, all four padas (6°40′–20°, lord Rahu): the storm and the tear. Venus here can be intense, unconventional and drawn to what is modern or technical; emotions arrive in waves and clear the air.
- Punarvasu, padas 1 to 3 (20°–30°, lord Jupiter): the return of the light. Warmth, forgiveness and second chances, with Jupiter's wider view softening Gemini's quickness.
Aspect on Sagittarius
Venus's 7th drishti from Gemini falls on Sagittarius, Jupiter's sign. The Gemini–Sagittarius axis pairs information with meaning, so this Venus is often attracted to people with a philosophy, a faith or a foreign background.
By lagna
Gemini is the natural 3rd house, so Venus in the 3rd house is the closest parallel: arts, communication, siblings and courage through skill. For particular lagnas:
- Gemini lagna: Venus, lord of the 5th and 12th, sits in the lagna in a friend's sign. Creativity and romance are part of the personality.
- Aquarius lagna: the yogakaraka (lord of the 4th and 9th) falls in the 5th house, a trikona. See Venus in the 5th house.
- Capricorn lagna: the yogakaraka lands in the 6th, a dusthana. Its good results tend to come through work, service and effort rather than ease.
- Sagittarius lagna: Venus, lord of the 6th and 11th, sits in the 7th and aspects the lagna.
- Libra lagna: the lagna lord is in the 9th in a friend's sign, a well-regarded placement for fortune and learning.
- Virgo lagna: Venus, lord of the 2nd and 9th, is in the 10th, where Venus has no directional strength but can support careers in media, art or trade.
Aspects, conjunctions, the navamsa and the running dasha modify all of these.
Venus in transit through Gemini
A normal pass lasts about 25 days. The site's 50 sampled passes ranged from a little over 24 days up to nearly 54, the longer ones linked to Venus's retrograde phase near this part of the zodiac. The dates are listed above, and the Venus transit page shows its live position. In gochar the passage is read from your Moon sign, and tradition treats Venus as helpful from most positions except the 6th, 7th and 10th from the Moon.
Differences and misreadings
- Friend's sign is not own sign. It is comfortable, not commanding.
- "Gemini Venus cannot commit." A tendency to seek variety is not a verdict; many long, happy partnerships show this placement.
- Mixed zodiacs. Western Gemini Venus is often sidereal Taurus, an own sign. Read Vedic vs Western sun signs, and compare Venus in Virgo, Mercury's other sign.
